On the surface this book is about a fifteen-year-old native American teen, while sleepwalking one evening, sees an image of a person stepping though a doorway. He lives with his mother and younger brother and what he observes is neither or them but bears a strong resemblance to his father who died mysteriously.
This book is deep, man. It is deep. At first, I didn't know quite what to make of this book. I often initially feel, when I pick up a book by Stepehen Graham Jones, that I am in over my head. There were a few times during the course of reading this book that I wondered just what am I reading? His writing is wonderous, mesmerizing, dripping in symbolism, deep, and dark. He takes a story about a male teenager who lives with his mother and younger brother who has seizures, and swirls in culture, identity, trauma, loss, and memory.
Mapping the Interior is in the horror genre but is more horrific than horror. I will note that this book does have bullying and violence to animals.

Spider to Unto an evil counsellor, close heart, and ear, and eye, And take a lesson from this tale, of the Spider and the Fly. 鈥斺€奙ary Howitt (1828)
Spider to the Flyis gripping, addictive, dark, tense, twisted, and hard to put down page turner! There is a diabolical serial killer who leaves 'interesting' clues behind. This book was a great cat-and-mouse thriller that caught my attention and had me trying to solve the case!
Ellie was shocked when one of the I-64 Strangler victims looked exactly like her! What are the chances that she has a doppelganger out there? Ellie was adopted, could this woman be her twin or just an unlucky look alike??? Ellie goes on to become a true crime writer and runs a true crime network and database. When law enforcement can't make headway in the ongoing murders, they turn to Ellie for assistance.
I enjoyed how the author showed on how online true crime buffs can help solve crimes or at least give them a new way of looking at both the suspect and/or killers and the victims. Speaking of killers, the one in this book is a twisted and devious killer. Like a spider spins it's web, J.H. Markert spins this intricate tale with precision. I had no idea where things were going to go or what tangled path Markert was going to take me down, but I was there for the ride.
The tension, dread, suspense, and danger intensified as the book progressed. This book has many layers and readers slowly get to learn more about the characters and their pasts/younger days. While I did want a little more about the character's childhoods and had a few questions remaining, I closed this book a happy reader.
Creepy, dark, twisted, and compelling.

Her The Wild Things: Neighborhood Nightmares Series centers on Kendall Casey a true crime writer who travels around following the stories she covers. Her latest project brings her to a community called The Cove in the North Carolina mountains. She is there to investigate the disappearance of a young girl three years earlier. The community is quick to welcome her, especially the Robinettes who throw interesting parties. Kendall gets a weird vibe from them and begins seeing strange things. Is she experiencing hallucinations or is something else going on....
This is a supernatural horror book that I thought would be right up my alley. This is the fourth book written by London Clarke that I have read and I tend to enjoy her writing, characters, plots, and books. While other reviewers are loving The Wild Things: Neighborhood Nightmares Series, it failed to wow me. We can't love them all and that is the case here so please read the other reviews for this book as well.
What did work was how Clarke created the chilling and creepy vibe in this book. She nailed the something-isn't-quite-right feeling that Kendall was feeling. This book was just missing that little bit of something that would have pushed my rating higher.

Slow to start but strong to finish, The Children of Eve involves missing children, a missing man, and devious and dangerous people. The books in the Charlie Parker series always have great mysteries, plenty of action, and a supernatural element. I love how Charlie Parker's long dead daughter Jennifer always comes into play in the books. I love seeing her and her watchful eye and interactions with Charlie and other supernatural elements. Fans of the series will be happy to see Angel and Louis make appearances as well. This book finds Charlie Parker smack dab in the middle of a whole lot of trouble when he is hired by a woman to find her missing boyfriend. Her boyfriend who got tangled up in a HUGE mess.
As I mentioned this book started on the slower side and I was worried that this might be one of the first books in the Charlie Parker series that I won鈥檛 enjoy. But he pace did pick up and this book became more and more enjoyable and intense as the subplots began to merge and things became more dicey and more mysterious. So, who are "The Children of Eve"? One will need to read this book to find out! The Children of Eve has many chilling, intense, gripping, and interesting parts. There are also some parts where readers will notice that Charlie is not as young as he used to be, and things hurt a little more than they once did.
But what doesn't get old, is the characters, their relationships, their banter, their love, and their teamwork. I love seeing them together, how they solve their unique cases, and how the depths of their love and courage shine through. As with the previous books in the series, The Children of Eve is wonderfully written, brimming with tension, atmosphere, twists, revelations, the supernatural, and dread.
Be sure to read the author's note to learn what trip he took inspired him to write this storyline.

These witches are way beyond that.

The first half of the book was a slow burn for me, but I stuck with it as the premise was intriguing. The second half of the book picks up and I was fully invested and wanted answers. I never knew where this book was going or where Silvia Moreno-Garcia was going to take me. The aspect of witches and warlocks was intriguing and piqued my interest. There was one part of the book which was a bit cringe-worthy and other parts that were a bit graphic but otherwise, I found this to be an interesting albeit different book.
Intriguing, dark, well written, and mysterious.

Gothic, chilling, haunting, gripping, shocking, dark, atmospheric, and brimming with atmosphere! Red Runs the Witch's Thread was inspired by the finalGothic, chilling, haunting, gripping, shocking, dark, atmospheric, and brimming with atmosphere! Red Runs the Witch's Thread was inspired by the final witch burning in Scotland in 1697. The burning is known as the "Paisley Witch Trials". The condemned were said to have bewitched eleven-year-old, Christian Shaw. I love books that are inspired by real events, real people, and historical events. Red Runs the Witch's Thread cast a spell on me as I was bewitched by Victorian Williamson's writing.
1722. Christian Shaw is determined to get her thread as white as possible. One might say that she is obsessed with bleaching the thread to get the perfect shade of white. She wants to raise money for her family and to find redemption for herself. When Christian was eleven years old in 1697. seven people were strangled and burned at the stake for bewitching her. Twenty-five years have passed since the witch burnings, and ravens are now gathering, and Christian鈥檚 memories are bubbling to the surface.
I was mesmerized by this book. As I mentioned, I am a fan of books that are inspired by true events/people. I loved the historical events/aspects of this book. I thought the author did a wonderful job with describing the way of life during the two timelines (鈥淲eft鈥 and 鈥淲arp鈥) in this book. The dress, the social divide, the treatment of women, the medical practices, the superstitions, and viewpoints on witches.
I also enjoyed the blending of superstitions, mental health issues, ignorance, innocence, and fate. This book is brimming with dread and unease. Christian is an interesting character. She is unreliable, unlikeable, and stern. Many of the other characters tend to tip toe around her but who could blame them? The one constant in Christian's life, is her faithful servant, Meg! Although Christian is not very likeable, I felt for her and those in her life as she began to unravel and memories of the past and her actions began to weigh on her. This book gives new meaning to hanging on by a thread!
This novella can easily be read in one day/sitting. I was instantly gripped, intrigued, and swept away to a dangerous time for both men and women. I loved the dread, the atmosphere, the gothic vibes, and the unsettling feel of the book. This book may have readers looking at the colors red and white in a whole different way moving forward.

Come take a walk in The Garden and meet Evelyn and Lily, two elderly sisters who have lived in isolation in their walled in garden. They do not know what lies beyond the walls. They have each other, their garden, their bees, their flowers, their vegetables, and their crumbling home. They follow the instructions their deceased mother left for them in what they call the almanac. The sister's lives are ordered, organized, and the same day after day. They live in the kitchen while the rest of the home lays to waste. Evelyn takes comfort in her life of order, while Lily is curious and inquisitive. When a boy is found living in the home, questions swirl through their minds....
What a delightfully dark and unique dystopian tale about two elderly women, a boy, and what may or may not have happened in the outside world. I loved the haunting and eerie atmosphere, the shocking jolt that the boy's presence had in their lives. This book is oozing with atmosphere and unease. I was full of wonder and dread not knowing where this book was heading. I could not help but wonder what it must be like to spend almost one's entire life with only one other person to talk with, to share a meal with, and to endure with. Having nothing but memories of the past, their mother, and their father. The Garden has a something-isn't-quite right feel jumping off the pages. I enjoyed how the author had the sisters both experiencing the boy鈥檚 presence in differing ways and watching as it affected them individually and its affect their relationship with each other.
If you are looking for something a little peculiar, dystopian, original, and atmospheric, look no further. The Garden grabbed me from the very first chapter and never let go!

Billy and his friends have their futures in front of them. It is the summer before they all go off to college. It should be a summer of fun in the sun, good times, good friends, and adventure. But when his best friend, David Spivey interstates a mysterious home on an island, and Billy, David and their group of friends begin to party, things change from fun in the sun to shadows, darkness, and danger. Something there had been lurking and waiting and now it has been awakened!
J.D. Barker has created a dark, chilling and haunting tale of evil that has lurked for generations. Things take a dark turn and as more is revealed, learned, and experienced by the characters, I felt as if I were right there with them as a silent observer. I enjoyed the emphasis on friendship, secrets, obligation, and sacrifice. But the friendships are what shinned through the darkness for me. There were quite a few characters in this book, but they all have a part to play along the way.
This was a dark tale full of dread, tension, and eeriness. There is a sense of unease flowing throughout the book which only grows stronger as the pages turn. This kept my attention and had me wanting to know what was going to happen next!

Joe Hill mentions in his note at the end of the book that it has been 10 years since he wrote his previous book. I believe readers of this book, will be crossing their fingers and perhaps even their toes, hoping that we don't have to wait another 10 years for the next book. Joe Hill perfectly blended fantasy, horror, some romance, and a quest in King Sorrow. Hmm, I wonder where he got the idea to use King in the title? He's got the chops kid; he's got the chops. Joe Hill once again proving that he can write, and he can write with great imagination, creativity, and skill!
The gist of this book is that six friends get in way over their heads (and then some) when they dabble in the occult to help a friend and perform a ritual which brings forth King Sorrow. He is a menacing, diabolical and evil dragon that is happy to give if he gets in return. What he wants is simple - a human sacrifice. But nothing is simple, and everything comes with a steep price.
I enjoyed how this book looks at human nature showing the good, the bad and the in-between. The characters are flawed, they are damaged, they are friends, they feel love, they long for what or who they can't have, they experience greed, they feel loss, they are strong, they are weak, and so many other things that all people feel at various points in their life. Throw in an evil obligation to a being who takes and takes greedily. Who makes them choose who dies and doesn't care what it costs them or others.
This was a BIG and LONG book which follows the characters through many stages of their lives. It is epic in length and scope. As they change, grow, and mature, so did my thoughts and opinions on them. This book had me rooting for most, booing and hissing at some, feeling pain for others, and crossing my fingers and holding my breath on more than one occasion.
There is something about friendship and how it changes and grows. There is also something about books which puts friends through the ringer that appeals to me. Joe Hill puts his characters through more than the ringer in King Sorrow. This book is horrific in a wonderful way. He nails the creepy, sinister, and twisted character of King Sorrow. He inserts tension, dread, and unease between the pages so that those elements jump from the pages when the book is opened. He also nails relationships, friendships, and love.
My one issue with this book is the length. On one level I get it. This book needs to be long to show the effect of how making such a deal has on each individual. On another level, it did feel long at times. Other than that, one issue, I was over the moon to read another book by Joe Hill.
Wonderfully written, gripping, horrific, dark, and a wild ride. Be sure to read the author's note at the end of the book.

I enjoyed the author's previous book Black Tide, and thought that White Line Fever would be a slam dunk for me. It has such an intriguing premise - friends headed to a weekend getaway decide to take a shortcut. A shortcut that will take them on County Road 951 which is infamously known as The Devil鈥檚 Driveway. From the name alone, I knew something sinister was going to happen! I was all in for that! But sadly, this one just did not work for me.
I was hoping to be horrified, scared, creeped out, and left fearing dark, dark roads. This book just failed to deliver for me. Were my hopes too high? Was I hoping for more as the friends took this dark ride down memory lane where the traumas of their past awaited them? Perhaps.
Even learning more as the book traveled through the present and gave glimpses back in time, just wasn't enough to garner a higher rating from me. The writing was descriptive and the characters were well drawn, but the story just wasn't for me. Others are enjoying this book more than I did so please read their reviews as well.

I really wanted to love this one. For me there were too many characters, not enough action throughout the book, and some parts that were just too slow for my taste. I struggle with slow burns and while some may enjoy how the author builds the story and peels back the layers, I found myself getting impatient.
Things that I did enjoy were how the author created tension and a sense of dread. There are a few I-think-something-bad-is-about-to-happen moments which I enjoyed.

Woohoo!!! Out of Air is a chilling, gripping, intense, eerie, and thrilling page turner! I did not want to put this book down and was sad when it ended. I was completely enthralled in the plot, glued to the pages, and loving every single page of this book! I loved the tension, the creepiness, the underwater world, the characters, the mysteries, and the horrors that awaited the divers deep in the ocean!
I was swept away by the author鈥檚 wonderful and descriptive writing. I felt as if I were right in the mist of the action as a silent observer; or shall I say diver. I also loved the friendship group that the five teens formed. There was a socio-economic divide, but they banded together through their love of the ocean, diving, and exploring.
The ocean is vast, deep, dark, wonderous, mysterious, and intriguing. But as the diving group learned, the ocean can also be creepy, horrific, unforgiving, and dangerous. I felt for both Gabe and Phibs and what happened to them after they emerged from the underwater cave they discovered.
This book has a little bit of everything - formed family, a sense of community, romance, friendship, family bonds, mystery, and romance. I loved how all of these blended together in Out of Air. I also enjoyed how this book was told through the present day and through glimpses into the past.
In case my review does not say it enough, I loved this book!

The Ascent is about Tim Overleigh who has joined an expedition to climb the Canyon of Souls in the Himalayas. Tim lost his ex-wife six months earlier and is still grappling with her loss and his grief. One could say that he is still haunted by her loss. His sense of adventure keeps him going as he and other climbers decide to face/fight the elements despite warnings from those who live there.
This book is heavy on atmosphere and chilling vibes. The quest of the climbers, the snow, the ice, the chilling vibe and the fight for survival was very well done. There are quite a few twists and revelations which I did not see coming toward the end. I also enjoyed the tension, sense of dread, and danger that jumped off the pages. The Ascentwas not as horrific as I would have liked, and I found I had a hard time connecting to or feeling for Tim.
This book had me grabbing for a warm blanket and thankful to be inside where is warm and cozy. While this was not my favorite book by Malfi, it was still enjoyable and a worthwhile read.

I enjoyed the mystery, the tension, the dark secrets, the mounting danger! The sea, the land, the towns people, and an apple tree hold a centuries old secret. In the coastal town of Cornwell, an apple tree grows. Every so often the apples come early. The townspeople know what it means and what they must do. To ensure their way of life remains balanced, certain things need to happen. They follow the ancient ways, beliefs, gods, and traditions. They are an isolated and tight-knit community where, like Cheers, everyone knows your name. But outsiders have discovered the beautiful setting and town and are buying up homes as the townspeople struggle.
When Merrin Moon left town for college, she never imagined she would come back to Scutter's Cove. But her mother has passed away and Merrin returned to take care of her mother's funeral. Back in Scutter's cove, Merrin has been reacquainted with old friends, her mother's old friends, and those she knew growing up. Things she has forgotten are beginning to come back to her as the days progress.
Jen is a young widow whose husband died in a horrific accident. She is in town with her deceased husband's friends and has formed a friendship with Merrin. Jen is drawn to the town, the apple tree.
Holy Moly! This was a great fast read that both enticed and spooked me! As I mentioned, I loved the atmosphere, the unease, the isolation, the tension, the creepy vibe of the book. The ancient ways, the history, the characters, and the sea made for a thrilling reading experience. I had no idea where this book was going to take me, but I enjoyed the twist filled creepy ride! David Barnett nailed writing vivid descriptions. I could see everything playing out in my mind as I read. I enjoyed the writing, the well thought out plot, and the characters. While I rooted for some, there were others who gave me the creeps. I could see this being made into a movie.

When Jake and Mariko meet at an Osaka airport, they are complete strangers but over drinks learn that they have something in common - they both lost someone close to them in an unimageable and bizarre manner. Jake lost his best friend, and Mariko lost her twin brother. As they talk, Jake and Mariko learn that the ones they lost both met a dark-haired woman days before their deaths.
Jake sets out on a mission which takes him around the world, to find this elusive woman and along the way, learns the disturbing and unsettling stories of her victims. How they met the diabolical dark-haired woman and how meeting her changed their lives forever. The author weaves the victim's testimonies/stories expertly together with the dark haired woman's present day hunt for her next victim!
This was a riveting and captivating book that is more horrific than horror. It is unsettling, evokes unease, and dread. I enjoyed the writing, the descriptions, and the ominous vibe of the book. With each page turned, I wondered if Jake would ever find her and what would happen if he did. Would he get the answers he was looking for?
Old Soul is an original blending of horror and literary fiction. As I mentioned above, it is more horrific than horror. Plus, the ending! I found it to be very well done.
