Abusive father for the MMC. I liked this book better, the foreshadowing of the twists were woven in with obvious enough hints to peak curiosity. It was almost like it was written as an overview that lacked meaning. Conversations where more than 4 people were present lacked clarity. This was messy.. The politics and academic aspect in particular was vague and pointlessly cryptic. The scene with Xadens mother and when Halden was captured eventful and added drama. But basically it was a failed attempt to find a cure for Xaden, a few second signets revealed, and finding Andarnas family. Back to square one. ...more

It did feel a little rushed, but there was urgency. Poor Acker� how did he miss this? Hmm. Hopefully the next book provides some background on how this all came together secretly. The scene when the kings gift was being discussed took a few re-reads to follow properly and I will probably look back and feel like it doesn’t make sense, but it was a surprise like no other. ...more
