This book is a fitting read for the start of 2025. The theme of this book is about how the processing of information impacts human society. We think of inventions like written language, printing press, telegraph, etc. as key reasons for advancements in human society. The author makes a strong case that these are just tools used by humans to control how information is distributed and processed. We are still in the early stages of the AI computer revolution where for the first time, a human invention can make decisions and ACT on them. We've had automated control loops and expert systems for many years which adjust a system based on inputs. However, AI computers have the ability to determine how to respond, and more importantly extrapolate a response based on prior learning. Biological organisms take millennia to tune these types of learning and acting systems. AI computers are being rushed through generations of learning before we are able to truly identify the risks of these systems.
