Except Nix prefers to have nuns for the cool imagery and with zero religious references, from the names to the hymns. They're not even celibate and even enter into non-committed relationships with druids (?). I thought more of amazons than nuns at all

Of course, you're waiting for Vanessa to snap out of it and admit what had been done to her, but it wasn't as simple as that. Not even the journalistic big moment that the novel seemed to be building so much momentum about. But no, it's just the mentality of journalists at work.
Part a homage to Lolita, part modern-day commentary, it doesn't allow facts to be explained away so easily. It's extremely unsettling and far more explicit than Nabokov's novel by straight giving voice to the victim and living inside her head throughout the text. (view spoiler)[ The explicit parts had no place in the text, really. I don't see how they pushed the narrative forward, and though it's shown she has wrecked basic aspects of her life, it's hard to see why she'd confess to a teacher and be all closed afterwards, with other women. Vanessa is, to me, an unreliable narrator even when this does not point out to Strane being innocent, I think it would have more effect if the depravity of his actions would remain partially hidden, like with Taylor Birch (hide spoiler)]
It's true that only she and her rapist were the most defined characters, still, it has some merit for trying to write a reply to Lolita from the opposite point of view. I won't say it's the best thing I read this year, but it sure was interesting in itself.
Also, aside from that one character that struck me as filler, it's good to know men can be perfectly empathetic and okay as characters. But if you sum one plus one, the result is still two: While there was no specific reason for Vanessa to be made into a victim, and the blame lied on her rapist, her neglectful parents are to blame.
Now onto the negatives, which are spoilery: (view spoiler)[those car escapades to his house were the most unrealistic thing about the book and a huge plot failure, the book can be incredibly crass and feel like it never reaches an adequate climax (hide spoiler)]....more

Simplemente maravilloso. Muy recomendable....more

I liked this one better than The Brothers Karamazov, so sue me. At its best, reminded me of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray or Nabokov's Lolita though I didn't expect it to have an open end like that....more

Bastante original.
De Amado Nervo solo conoc铆a algunos poemas sueltos.

I tried steampunk thinking the Victorian atmosphere would be more of my liking, but this writing is too modern and it mistakens romance by what you see on cheap movies. Some themes weren't that bad, but in the end it's not worth it. I only am thankful that it was short. ...more
