It scared me a little to hear that it was the story of an actual multiple murder which had happened 50 years - to the day, to make it even more dramatic - before I read it for school. I didn't like the idea of diving into a murderers head. But while, of course, it doesn't justify their actions, the two killers are actually quite likeable. It's provoking, making us realize that the world is not black and white, good and evil. Most areas of life are gray zones. It was truly fascinating to read this book....more

And I do so admire Huck's tremendous gift of story telling (or as some may call it: lying). But for some reason, I found it hard to really dive into the book. It wasn't bad, don't get me wrong, but I didn't sit for hours and hours, allowing myself to get sucked into the world of Huck and Jim. It was a medium good book.
Something I did learn, however, was that I do not wish to read its predecessor about Tom Sawyer. What a character! And I don't mean that in a good way. So exhausting. Had it been phsycially possible to enter the story, I'd've smacked him and told him to just get on with it. Strange as this sounds, there was something very Jane Austen-ish about that boy. Nothing is ever simple and straight forward. Why write a short story when you can write an epic?...more
