Amber awakens in a hospital, but finds herself completely paralyzed. She cannot move, speak, or even open her eyes. Although she can hear those around her, they remain unaware of her consciousness. Her memory is blank, yet she can't shake the feeling that her husband may have played a role in her current state. As she drifts between her comatose present, the week before the accident, and entries from her childhood journals, Amber's mind becomes engulfed in a gripping psychological thriller. She questions the truth behind her reality, wondering if a lie can truly be accepted if it feels like the truth. Initially, Amber evokes sympathy after being involved in a car accident and remaining in a coma. Previously, she grappled with the painful realization that her marriage had lost its spark. Her boss, radio host Madeline Frost, bullies her and seeks to have her fired. Although her sister Claire appears to be the ideal sibling, this perfection can be annoying. Amber's own childhood was troubled, as she envied her friend Taylor, who seemed to lead the perfect life. In contrast, Amber endured bullying at school and struggled to make friends. After unexpectedly running into her ex-boyfriend Edward, Amber agrees to have dinner with him. The next morning, she wakes up in his apartment, terrified that he has drugged and sexually assaulted her. Amber discovers that Edward's career as a doctor was derailed by accusations made against him, allegedly by her sister Claire, who had been pretending to be Amber. Shockingly, Amber also learns that she is pregnant. On Christmas Day, a heated argument with Claire leads to Amber experiencing bleeding. Claire offers to drive her to the hospital, where they are involved in an accident that leaves Amber in her current state. In a selfish attempt to avoid trouble for the accident, Claire abandons Amber at the scene and flees. Amber felt a knot in her stomach, convinced that something was wrong with her husband, Paul. Her suspicions were confirmed when she stumbled upon a gift bag filled with seductive lingerie. To make matters worse, she noticed that Paul and her sister, Claire, had become increasingly close. The thought of them having an affair left Amber reeling. In an attempt to secure her own job, Amber devised a plan to tarnish her boss Madeline's reputation. She resorted to sending threatening letters in hopes of discrediting her. However, Amber's world was turned upside down when she ran into her ex-boyfriend Edward and agreed to have dinner with him. The next thing she knew, she woke up in his apartment, feeling violated and convinced that he had drugged and assaulted her. Her anger only intensified when she learned that the accusations that ruined Edward's medical career were allegedly made by Claire, pretending to be Amber. To add to her turmoil, Amber discovered that she was pregnant. However, on Christmas Day, during a heated argument with Claire, she began to bleed and was rushed to the hospital. The accident on the way seemed too convenient for Claire's involvement, especially since she left Amber behind and fled the scene. Things only became more confusing when Amber's supposedly deceased parents appeared at the hospital. But were they truly there, or was it all just a figment of her imagination? The truth came to light when it was revealed that Amber was pregnant at the time of the accident, resulting in the loss of her baby. As Amber lay in the hospital, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched and violated by Edward, who had access to her room as a hospital porter. She was horrified when Paul, her own husband, confessed to installing cameras in her room. The doctors discussed pulling the plug on her life support, and Paul was desperate to prove that she was still responding. Suddenly, Paul's luck changed when he announced that his struggling writing career had finally taken off, and a publisher had offered him a large sum of money for his latest novel. Meanwhile, Amber offered to prepare a romantic Valentine's Day dinner for Claire and David but secretly drugged their food with "the bag of drugs from the hospital." She snuck back to their house, only to discover David dead and Claire paralyzed. In a fit of rage, Amber set their house on fire, framing her ex-boss Madeline for the murders. As the pieces of the puzzle fell into place, Amber realized the extent of her husband's betrayal and her sister's deceit. Her life had been a rollercoaster of lies and manipulation, but it was time for her to take control and seek justice for the wrongs done to her. Her voice was strong and determined as she vowed to rise above it all and fight for her happiness. Amber and Paul have decided to become the legal parents of Claire and David's twins. While currently on vacation with Paul and the twins, Amber enters their hotel room to find Paul on a call. Shortly after, a surprise gift arrives at their room鈥攁 beautiful bracelet with Amber's birthdate personally engraved on it.
Overview I found that the main character, Amber, was the only aspect I disliked about the story. Although she was the central figure, I would have preferred to hear the narrative from a different perspective. Additionally, Amber's constant lies made it challenging to determine what was true and what wasn't. Despite her admission of destroying her boss, Madeline, and killing Claire and David, it's possible that Amber's sister may have died in the fire, and Amber is using her as a scapegoat for her wrongdoings. As a result, it's evident to me that Amber is struggling with a mental illness.
