I love Neko forever and this just deepened that love. What an origin story. What a heartbreaking, beautiful memoir. I feel honored that she’s shared this glimpse into her life & holy smokes I can’t wait to see what a Thelma & Louise musical through her lens is going to look like. ...more

2.5⭐️ rounded up. I really wanted to love this book. A school for magic meets an HBCU? Sign me up. But this reads purely as a wish fulfillment book for the author, which could work - everyone deserves to see themselves in fantasy. But this is far from perfect, for reasons I see others have covered in detail - its treatment of women particularly and naming one of the only queer characters “D. It made me glad I chose to listen to the audiobook and got to hear him read his work.
For a non-poetry reader, all I can say is that I truly appreciate the way Smith’s work feels accessible and relatable. He creates sketches of everyday life with words and then hits you with something profound that makes you sit and think about humanity and existence.
I’ll absolutely be reading more from him.
