It was great as a tension-filled slow burn fantasy romance. It did answer some questions from the Legends of Thezmarr but not all. I love all the characters we meet and they are really well fleshed out despite the short timeframe, even Terrence. I like how Talemir and Drew have to work together before falling in love. It was a good plot with good pacing. However, I think there should have been a bit more of a learning curve to Talemir using his powers considering how long he suppressed them rather than trained with them. I also would have thought we would have seen more of Draithus considering how much he's mentioned in Legends of Thezmarr. All in all a great accompaniment to the Legends of Thezmarr but also could easily be read on its own....more

I didn't think there was a lot that happened in the majority of the book. A trip, people keeping secrets, some training. It wasn't even a good training montage as Thea is/was already good. My main gripe is that there was a lot less plot and a lot more spice in this book. Literally 5 seconds after they say friends only & no special fun time. They have constant special fun time.
The last few chapters try to throw some plot twists in there, but many were predictable and very foreshadowed if you had an inkling. I still liked it a lot so I will continue, following "emotional impact" reading order....more

It is just an expansion of what we already hear in Blood & Steel (As someone who is 60% through Blood & Steel and a friend told me that there was a prequel novella I had to smash it out before continuing). There is no new information. I would not say it was necessary to read this beforehand. I've heard it was written for people who needed it written explicitly but as a reader I don't think you would need it. There are literal paragraphs that are exactly the same in Blood & Steel.
Spoiler: I did have an epiphany about what the Warsword said to Thea though!! ...more
