I had been outplayed by Gideon the Ninth, outgunned by Harrow the Ninth, and, now, I have been undone by Nona the Ninth.
This book destroyed me (as expected). Tamsyn Muir is a genius (as we already knew). I need Alecto the Ninth to come out tomorrow (but I'll wait however long it takes, it's fine).
REREAD AUGUST 2023: Yes, I have now also read The Unwanted Guest and I have been forever changed. No one talk to me for the next week, I will be recovering from the pain Tamsyn Muir insists on inflicting on me....more

Unsurprisingly, this book is just as good the second time around. I listened to it on audiobook this time, and I have to say, kudos to Moira Quirk, because she brought such life to Gideon and Harrow that I was taken aback at how it all sounded like them.
What Tamsyn Muir does here is craft a world so unique that I can't properly classify it. It's fantasy and sci-fi and post-apocalyptic even, with a bit of murder mystery thrown in there as well as a competition plot, the best enemies to lovers sapphic romance you could ever encounter and a whole bunch of necromancy. And she does it wonderfully. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it ever since I read it in August and I'm sure that won't change in the months to come. Reading it a second time just brought to my attention all the hints and tidbits of information that I missed the first time either because I had no clue of what was happening or because I was distracted thinking about Gideon's biceps.
And let's talk about Gideon for a moment. She is probably the best character I've read all year. I completely fell in love with her the first time and I find myself in the same situation now. She's charismatic and sarcastic and rude and kind and passionate and loving and also just a dumb lesbian jock completely overwhelmed in the middle of so many beautiful women. Her voice is so unique to her that it feels like I've known her for ages, like we're best friends. I truly, one-hundred-percent love Gideon Nav, and she might just become one of my favorite characters of all time.
And then there's Reverend Daughter Harrowhark Nonagesimus. Oh, my goth queen necromancer, how I love you. Even when you're rejecting every bit of sentimentality and pretending you have no heart, in all your self-destructing and self-hating personality, I still love you. Please take care of yourself. Or at least let Gideon do it for you. You would think Harrow's the type of character who's been done before, right? But you'd be so wrong. She's just as unique as Gideon, even though they're polar opposites. The perfect necromancer/cavalier duo that could ever be. (Also, Harrow's voice in the audiobook? Utter perfection. It's just the right amount of preposterous, arrogant Ninth House necromancer that I needed. Everytime she said Griddle I got literal chills.)
P.S.: I am also in love with (almost) every single other character in this book, but if I went over them one by one this review would never end. So, Palamedes, Camilla, Isaac, Jeannemary and Magnus? You're the best and I miss you already.

I'm glad Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ keeps track of how many times I've read this book, because I've lost count. Still just as perfect every single time, though.

Just wanted to write down that this is my ninth time reading Gideon the Ninth right before Nona the Ninth comes out. I think it's fitting.
