To Andy, whom Renay called Ann, his mother was both literally and figuratively larger than life. Zaftig, opinionated, outspoken, and hard working, Renay wrangled her six equally loud (and foul) mouthed progeny across the South from one flophouse to the next while working 3 jobs to keep the lights barely on. From rundown bowling alleys to the red-light district, Dirtbag Queen reeks of 1970s squalor. Readers will be able to smell the Virgin Slim stained wood-paneling, and the kugel smashed into the wall-to-wall shag carpeting. Steeped in working class Jewish culture and Andy’s camp sensibilities, this memoir, like Renay herself, is profane, irreverent, impolite, and hilarious.

That said I did appreciate the amount of swearing and F-bombs that were in this book. It's an easy read that moves quickly and asks nothing much from the reader. It's the book version of junk food - easy to consume with no real value. It reads like (bad) YA and I would not at all be surprised to find out that this book is fan fiction of some IP much like Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey. It's a very predictable enemies-to-lovers romantasy. The main relationships are straight. The one queer relationship ended with the "kill your queers" trope. This does feature a disabled main character....more
