Wigglebottom Learns About Sportsmanship, Howard has a hard time losing in any game he plays. He goes so far as to cheat and hurt his friends in the process of winning. Howard will do whatever it takes to win a game so he will continue being the best. During a soccer game Howard monopolizes the ball and trips other players. When the coach calls him out on it Howard becomes very rude and upset with the coach, causing him to be thrown out of the game and sat on the bench. Howard is furious and begins to think how unfair this is, but suddenly a father stands up and starts yelling at the referee. Howard can't believe how this father is making himself look to others and hopes he doesn't look like that. The father gets escorted out, and Howard is left with the thoughts of his actions. Howard becomes ashamed of his behavior. He realizes that winning isn't everything and he has been unfair. He apologizes to his coach and asks for another chance to play during the soccer game. During the game Howard has the chance to score the winning goal, but sees another team mate wide open who could also make the shot. He has a tough decision...should he shoot and score the goal or give the other team mate an opportunity to win? He kicks the ball over and they lose, but Howard is so happy that he played fair he doesn't care. He realizes there's much more to life than winning, and covets his second place trophy over his first places ones all combined. He even shakes hands with the winning team, and praises all his team mates on their hard work.
Every child has an issue when it comes to winning or losing. Losing is a tough childhood lesson to learn, and something a lot of children deal with. All children love the feeling of winning and they start to think winning is everything. Often times this can lead to being a "sore loser" without them even realizing it, and before they realize it they are acting out if they lose or even cheating to win. Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Sportsmanship teaches fair play and the value of good sportsmanship. I think this is a book that all children can learn from, and the colorful fun illustrations help keep children engaged page after page. My 5 year old son was riveted. Often he does okay with playing games, but like all children he wants to win. He can sometimes be upset or get a little down when he doesn't win at something. This book really helped show him that it doesn't matter whether you win or lose, but whether you're having fun playing the game. There's more to winning such as friendship, teamwork, and having fun. He has carried this lesson on over to his own friends and it has created a more positive play experience for everyone. Now he is more focused on the fun of the game rather than winning or losing and is happy whatever the outcome. At the end of the book there are helpful tips, and lessons that parents and teachers can put into play.

Along the way yo::My Description:: Snuggles is a baby snow monkey on a journey with his mom to the hot springs where they will survive the winter. Along the way you and your child will see breath-taking photographs (taken by the author/master photographer himself, Tim Ostermeyer) of Snuggles, his mother, and other snow monkeys as they embark on their journey. The photos are magical, wonderfully taken, and will definitely keep a child of any age intrigued. In addition to the photographs Snuggle's journey unfolds and your child will learn all about planning ahead, snow monkey facts, evolution, bible verses, etc. I love how everything is put together nicely in this book without taking away from the story at hand. Your child won't feel as if your merely lecturing on facts but will follow a wonderful story line of love, planning, and faith. There are bible verses on various pages throughout the book which gives understanding, encouragement, love, and boosts faith in children. It also relates nicely to the part of Snuggle's journey which makes it fall right in place.
::My personal thoughts:: I love how this book teaches a multitude of things at once. The photographs are just beautifully taken and will immediately capture and hold your child's attention. I have two sons age 4 and 1 1/2 and they were BOTH riveted. Even my youngest kept pointing at the pages totally intrigued. The messages of faith, love, and God's understanding are scattered throughout which is just wonderful. Many of the verses are just perfect for a child to hear to feel that protection and love from God. Your child will also learn interesting facts about snow monkeys, the Japanese alps, and evolution in general. It's never too early to teach our children interesting facts, and this book puts it in perfect understanding for even the youngest of scholars. All in all I loved it, my kids loved it, and I would recommend it to anyone. We found ourselves laughing aloud to Snuggle's silly remarks, adventures, and friends along the way. Plus my children have a new great understanding on how planning ahead makes things so much easier in life and can potentially avoid obstacles that we don't have to put ourselves through. So many great messages in such a beautiful book, I am very pleased with this read.

The story flows easily, If you have a child that likes dinosaurs and has a wild imagination then you definitely don’t want to miss out on this book. The story flows easily, and there are wonderful illustrations throughout which keeps children intrigued. I love how the author threw in little details which will have your child asking even more questions about space and science rather than purely about the dinosaurs. It speaks of the Hubble telescope, planets, constellations, etc. And all the while these little details popped up the author never lost sight of the most interesting characters, the dinosaurs. What I really loved about this book is that it really plays on your child’s imagination and creates a whole new scene for them to imagine. This is really fun for parents and children alike. It's really a book for parents and children, as well as boys and girls. I as a parent fell in love with this book myself. If I had to give this book an age group I would say that ages 5-9 could get the most enjoyment out of it, although my son is 4 and he really loved it. It really depends on your child and his/her preferences. My son loves dinosaurs and loved the thought that they could be in outer space. Ever since we’ve read the book he likes to look outside at night and see if he can see them up there. He asked me all about the Hubble telescope (that Stumpy Stegosaurus used as a baseball bat), and all about the little dipper which the plesiosaurus siblings took a leisurely drink out of, etc. Those are just a couple of sneak peaks at how much of a fun read this book is. It is definitely one of the more fun imaginative children’s books I have had the pleasure of reading with my son.

more from this reviewer Telling The Truth Is Cool Lying is common among young children, and unfortunately in today's world lies are flung from all directions. This tends to set a bad example and can make telling the truth harder for the children. Children can tell lies for various reasons from jealousy, fear of getting into trouble, to get out of doing something, etc. But telling lies will only make us feel worse. That's why it's good to talk to our children about telling the truth. Lying feels like such a burden. One lie has to turn into more, and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Before you know it your feeling weighed down inside and out. That's exactly how Howard B. Wigglebottom feels in this book. Howard finds himself in various situations where he feels that lying is the best option. Unfortunately for Howard with every lie he tells the monkey on his back grows and grows. Before he knows it he is so weighed down that he can't stand it. He decides the best thing to do is tell the truth and with every truth told the monkey gets smaller and smaller. Once Howard comes clean he feels so happy, and truly learns his lesson about telling the truth. Telling the truth not only makes us feel better about ourselves, but others trust in us more. It creates a better life as a whole, and this is something that we need to be teaching our children. Thankfully Howard B. Wigglebottom is here to help with that. This is a great learning book for young children. Not only is it instrumental in teaching a valuable lesson about telling the truth, but it's entertaining and the illustrations are wonderfully done. The Howard B. Wigglebottom books have everything you need to not only keep your children intrigued in the story, but teaching them a valuable life lesson at the same time. Howard B. Wigglebottom is a great role model. This is a great book to read alone to your children, or even for a teacher to read aloud to a class. Finally a book that is entertaining while teaching our future generations important life lessons along the way!

It’s a compilation of mother goose rhymes except the author has the inexplicable talent of modernizing these old favorites. The old woman that lived in the shoe now has maids and TVs, The little piggy’s that go to market get pizza’s, Old King Cole has a tv show. It is just amazing how these old time classics are turned modern. They are all quirky and fun. I found myself smiling in spite of myself. This book did not have any pictures, and normally that would be a big downfall for our family as my son just adores pictures to go along with the story. However, the poems were just so hilarious that as I read them we just laughed and laughed in spite of our previous picture reservations. Not only is it a fun read for children, but as adults who have grown up with the timeless classics of mother goose you as well will enjoy these modern twists. I have to say it is a job well done and I do highly recommend it. And even though there aren’t any pictures you can easily picture each poem in your mind and it is just riotous to say the very least. Highly recommended, and a great something to read for afternoon story time to brighten up your day.
