What a beautiful story.Homegoing uses the frame of Effia and Esi, two sisters who have never met, and traces each of their descendants through history (1770s to present) as they branch out over both Ghana and the United States. It's a device that's unique and interesting without being gimmicky, and it's important to note that the vignettes don't feel particularly like short stories (it would have been a strike against for me if they had - I've yet to find a short story collection I really enjoy) as they're linked both through the characters and thematically. Each new character has their own story to tell, but there are appearances from previous and future generations that give the novel a lovely flow - and a handy genealogy chart at the beginning to help you keep track! It's a huge feat of storytelling because Gyasi has managed to fit something that's truly epic in scope into 300 pages without it feeling rushed or incomplete.

I think this one suffered because of a little interruption in the form of a full Harry Potter series reread...nevertheless, it was very touching and sad - especially the last hundred pages or so - but suffered from a slow middle section and average prose. I'm also never inclined to love war themed books, so they have to be really unique to capture my heart. Still recommended for anyone who is interested in World War II books, because it's certainly full of emotion and well thought out characters.
