This being a Booker Prize winner, this usually promises something special. However, it was a disappointment to find it to be yet another version of the tired old trope of a jaded older author/professor having an affair with a much, much younger woman. The only surprising thing was that this version was written bij a woman. The author is extremely expert in her prose, and the background is interesting in post-war divided Berlin up to and after the fall of the wall, but the effect of divided an reunified Berlin is mostly seen in the periphery, while we go through pages of the old serial-cheating chainsmoker berating and diminishing this young woman for a one night stand while he is living with his wife and son. Yes I guess I see the metaphor, but did I enjoy it? Nah. I got through it with a Rotkäppchen.

**spoiler alert** In his notes Olde Heuvelt cited Stephen King as his big inspiration. It shows in his execution. I was riveted, and the tension built deliciously well, and then at the end it all fell apart into hysterics and contrivances, something that can also plague King's work. One main character disappears entitely from the plot. Also, the conclusion that all people are inherently evil and the children will suffer was such an easy go-to conclusion. So one star less for not delivering at the end, but still a wonderful achievement, a great thriller, and a book I couldn't put down.
