The underground man doesn't hate you. But he simply blames you for making him hate himself. He's pathetic, yet he doesn't allow you to feel sorry for him. He's viciously hateful and full of contempt, but still unworthy of your just reaction. He yearns for love yet at the same time he rejects it, because he doesn't want his self-loathing to cease.
