I really enjoyed about the first half of this novel. I loved how each chapter was devoted to the different perspective of each of the sisters (and theI really enjoyed about the first half of this novel. I loved how each chapter was devoted to the different perspective of each of the sisters (and their mother) on their situation in Africa. You couldn't help but learn to like each of the girls-- even Rachel, and the storyline moved quickly for me even though the foreshadowing that one of them dies got a little annoying. The second half however, got a bit tedious. I felt like it could have ended. And then ended again. And again. But she keeps revisiting each of the sisters in Africa later on in life, but more importantly it's kind of a soap box for all of the atrocities committed in the Congo (and elsewhere in Africa) by whites. Believe me, I learned a lot politically and historically that definitely bothered me and made me want to learn more, which was probably the author's point, but it just felt overdone to me. ...more
