Then lets toss in a half starved dog that gets into the house, and Space Cowboy an insane Acromegalic murderer! Not enough how about a past where your so much loved father does something to you that scars you for life. Not only is this a psychological thriller but there is elements of horror too. And don't get me started on the gruesome way she gets out of those cuffs! Netflix has a version of this story ( I say version, due to the amount of changes they took the liberty of making) but they had me squirming with that scene! This is a companion novel to Dolores Claiborne .When you read that book (which I think you should read first) you see Jesse as a child crying in her room through a vision that Dolores has. And vise versa for Jesse in Gerald's Game. King has a habit of that which is fun to catch, he also sprays amounts of pop culture from my Namesake Ayla in the Valley of the horses, to music from Marvin Gaye to the Steve Miller Band , along with a line of Poe "Only that and nothing more" that is repeated like a mantra through the book....more

The Crimson king a big component of the Dark tower series is prominent in this story of a man Ralph who is suffering from Insomnia after the death of his beloved wife Carolyn. He starts to see Auras and little men,he thinks he's losing his mind , then he discovers the truth. The three fates Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos make an appearance here. It is up to Ralph aka Norton, and Lois (who is suffering from the same insomnia that Ralph is) to stop the Crimson King from killing a young boy (through Ed), who has an important part to play. There is also a comment about a bar that burned down, the same one from IT, this also happens in Derry and the comment about how things fell in the sewer that have a habit of reappearing. I love how he just weaves his stories in such a way that is is reminiscent of the web of life, how everything is connected. Eli Wallach is the narrator and he does a wonderful job of voicing these elderly characters and all of the other cast. I found his voice rather pleasant to listen to as he acted out the story....more

I found the whole thing about Salem's Lot in the story and mentioning of Stephen King's name here and there to be his usual signature of stepping into his story like he does in the movies. Only it went a step higher when Roland and Eddy actually find him in Maine. The whole shock of seeing him his characters come to life was hysterical. Using the Crimson king as his excuse for writing the story was an interesting development. His Coda at the end continued the story and the death instead of serious injury was a nice touch. ...more

I had the audio book and the narrator Edward Herrmann did an amazing job of reading it! The Maine accents and the change of timbre in his voice throughout to give the story a visual feel as well as an auditory experience. The ending was expectable did anyone think that Gard could survive? And after all the Dallas police did come in to Haven( Is this the same city that the later series is based on?).But it was nice to see Hilly and David together again. ...more

Also how he adds elements of other stories like ka, the crimson king, and some of the same characters here will appear later in other stories. It is like I am walking in the world of Stephen King. Hearts in Atlantis was narrated in this audio book by William Hurt who is enjoyable to listen to with his expressionable voice. The chapters are spaced with music genre of the times, first with jazzy big band sound, then guitar music of the early 60 's and so on. And there are 2 Stories between Bobby's that are narrated by the author. Really fun to listen to....more
