I didn’t know a single thing about the Appalachian people until reading this book and now I feel both heartache for all the broken communities of America and also rife with curiosity to learn more.

This is my first time re-reading this book since I was in high school and the illustrations added such a depth to the diary wherein I could connect with Anne on a whole other level. Her writing is absolutely gorgeous, and she was so ahead of her time in the way she was able to make such poignant observations of both the world around her and her inner world. I loved how self-aware she was and how she struggled with the part of her that wants to joke and have fun, and the softer part of her that is quite broken and scared. I wept for her lost dreams and her erased identity as she was buried in a mass grave with her sister after losing her mother and everyone around her except her father. My only solace is that her dream of becoming a famous writer came true, although it breaks my heart that she never got to witness it. ...more
