While the plot of the first volume focused more on the "war" between the two towns, this volume switches to focusing on the unsolved murder of a teacher years before. I think it works better overall and plays to Matt Kindt's strengths as a storyteller more effectively.
The main failing of this series so far is the world-building. Outside of some heavy-handed "racism is bad" moments with one of the characters, there's no real reason given as to why these people, who have nothing in common, all want to live in a weird commune where an unelected trio of brothers rule. The sheriff of the neighbouring town is a POS, but so are a lot of the people in Grass Kingdom. But if you can take your brain out and enjoy it for what it is, it's not bad....more

I hadn't realised before now just how little of what we know as the story of Troy actually appears in The Iliad. Turns out it's actually The Aeneid that we have to thank for the Trojan Horse.
Overall, I feel like I got more from the introduction than from the text itself. But I'm glad I read it, and I'll be picking up more millennia-old classics going forward....more

Not as good as the main book, but then it's not really supposed to be. Still very enjoyable. ...more
