Ranulf Thorsen is a centuries old Viking and a Talion enforcer. He has been doing his job for centuries and he is tired of it. tired of the killing the renegades of his breed.
Sandor Kearn is another Talion and Ranulf's bitter rival. He also has been ordered to help Ranulf with the renegade Kyth that set fire to a human nightclub.
Kerry Logan is a "human" but is actually an unknown Kyth. Who has immense Kyth power and is unaware that she holds the key to the Kyth's fate.

Blake Trahern is a Paladin, a seriously deadly one at that. Major ALPHA-MALE here ladies. He is part of the Seattle group of Paladins but travels home to the St. Louis area to investigate his patrons murder.
Brenna is the daughter of Blakes patron, Judge Nichols. Judge Nichols was murdered by a car bomb that injured Brenna. Brenna has been in love with Blake for many years but he disappeared 12 years ago and she has been hurt by his disapperance. Blake also has feelings for her but he is close to the edge of turning into one of the Others. If that happens they will put Blake down.
I loved this one. Blake does come over as one mean, arrogant SOB, he did in the first book of the series as well. But that is him, he is teetering so close to the edge of insanity it is scary. At first Breanna argues with him over everything but once he explains what is going on and what he is, things do get better. I loved the ending of the book. and that is all I will say about that.

Devilin is a Paladin, a member of an ancient brotherhood of warriors. They battle against the Others, monsters from a different dimension. Devilin is the leader of the Seattle branch. Paladins are guardians of "The Barrier", an energy barrier between our world and the Other's world. The barrier is the weakest around fault lines and volcanos. Paladins are destined to fight the others but they can be killed over and over again, only to regenerate and fight again time after time but they lose small peices of their humanity each time this happens.
Laurel Young is a doctor but she is a Handler of the Paladins. She nurses them back to health and monitors them to make sure they do not go totally crazy. If they do they must be put down like rabid animals for they are vicious. Laurel is Devilin's handler but she is falling in love with him and he is with her which is forbidden under the rule of the governing body of the Paladians, the Regents.
Phew!! Ok, i think I got that explained right, I hope. This book was different and I really like it. After awhile if you read the same genre after awhile it becomes all the same but this is different and refreshing....more
