Very very little content. Maybe if it was half the price it would be worth it as an introduction book if you never heard of psychedelics in your entire life.
The content isn't bad per se, it's just you'd be WAY better off with literally any other book and it's very overpriced for so little that you're getting. It's a like mediocre article printed on a book. The quality of the book (physically) isn't that good either. ...more

I was expecting a somewhat mediocre self-help book, but I was pleasantly surprised. It takes through countless examples in history on how the ego can sabotage yourself, and to avoid happening to you. The book is loaded is gems. When I read something that is super good, I write down the page on the book marker for future reference, and I've wrote more pages in this book than in any other.
It's very well written, and it's ingeniously divided into 3 parts: Aspire, Success, and Failure. And you're always in one of the 3. And in each one the ego can make your situation worse. If you read this book though, it may help you to avoid such mistakes. But it's not easy. Because as the title claims, ego is indeed our greatest opponent....more

Very well written and researched, hard to imagine being better. It's a bit long, and due being very heavy in history, it gets a bit tedious sometimes, so it's definitely not a casual read.
I wouldn't recommend as an introductory book on this topic. It's of the most benefit for those who already have a basic knowledge of the topic and want to know more about how LSD progressed culturally and politically in Britain, and how that influenced how it's perceived today.
This book merges well with Acid Dream: The Complete Social History of LSD. Together, they give a very insightful account of everything related to LSD, as the US and Britain were the two main stages of the counter-culture of the 60s....more

If you're familiar with Alan's philosophy, you probably won't get that much out of it. He uses the psychedelic experience to explain and validate Buddist and Hindu philosophy. I felt some parts of the book were a bit hard to read due to the complexity of the issues being discussed, but it's still readable, just takes some extra effort than predicted. Doesn't add anything new or spectacular, but it's a nice addition to one's psychedelia literature, especially if spirituality and eastern thought are topics of interest....more

For those who want to have a basic foundation of philosophy, this is the great introduction. It's not too small or too big, and it's very user-friendly. Ordered chronologically, it takes you through each major eras of philosophy, taking a look at each individual philosopher with about 2 pages each, but can be as short as 1 and as long as 4 depending on their importance. It's very well organized, with constant references to other philosophers and their respective pages so you can easily navigate a topic. My only complaint would be that I'd like bigger sections for very important philosophers like nietzsche, kant, etc. But nevertheless, truly a great book for anyone interested in philosophy....more

He explains quite beautifully the experience and reality shift he experienced along with his overall thoughts and philosophies on the psychedelic experience. Although I liked the book, for me it didn't meet the standard of its legendary status. At times it was too poetic for my liking and I had to grind through it.
Nevertheless, it's worth a read, and with a massive historical importance for its impact on the development of the psychedelic culture....more

I liked the book. Grof is obviously a smart guy, and his input on LSD and psychedelics is obviously very valuable. However, I have a hard time believing some of his claims. And everyone should. I think he takes the experiences of his patients too literally, which is odd considering he's a Jungian. When you're more or less claiming supernatural events that defy modern science, you're gonna need a little bit more than anecdotes. I don't care how frequent they are or how consistent they are with his own theories of transpersonal psychology. As the famous saying goes: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. And that's most definitely not provided by Grof.
Nevertheless, I think it's worth reading and was well written. You just have to take some his claims with a grain of salt....more

A bit longer than most books on this topic, but very worth it. I'd say the title is a bit misleading because it focuses almost entirely on ecstasy, rather than LSD. Still, it's a wonderful read even if you're only interested in LSD, which was more or less my case until I stumbled up this book.
The book is quite interesting and original. It's laid out as telling the life story of a few people. Instead of telling you the value and history of these substances, it tells you through their stories. This makes it a lot more personal and emphasizes the tremendous potential of these drugs.
