**spoiler alert** Reading this without having reread the previous 2 books right before made this a very confusing start to the book as there’s a lot o**spoiler alert** Reading this without having reread the previous 2 books right before made this a very confusing start to the book as there’s a lot of information and politicking at the beginning where you needed a foundation from the previous books. There are a lot of characters and dragons and places and names of things/ people/ powers that felt like they were needlessly name dropped without too much context throughout the book which I found to detract from the reading experience. I also didn’t really love her writing style in some parts of the book. I felt like it was choppy- in that sometimes I couldn’t understand what was being implied or who was being talked about or the logic that spurred the next comment. My other issue is the main romance in this series just doesn’t capture my interest as much as it did in the first book mostly because the characters are already together. I found myself kinda uninterested in the times they were together because their moments alone mostly just amounted to sleeping together or wanting to. There just didn’t seem to be much more depth to their love than their physical needs. I also just felt like some of the things said by Xaden and Violet were kinda just over the top and at times a little cringy for my taste. At this point in the series, I am more invested in the plot and fantasy elements of the series than the romance.
I think although the writing really detracted from the book for me I still enjoyed the latter half of the book for the plot and the dragons . So I think it’s more like a 3.8⭐️ read for me. The ending of course is a cliffhanger and even though I do have criques about the book, I still can’t wait to see what happens in the next book....more
