It's always a bit hard to tell when starting a book what is a critique and what is the author's own lack of awareness, and I couldn't remember why this was on my list (who rec'd it?!) so it was a bit hard to keep going. (To be clear, I got maybe two chapters in, lol.)...more

MJust finished reading a few of Naomi Kritzer's books (thanks for the rec 57th St books!), and I have basically the same thing to say about them all. Mostly that they are super delightful.
I described them as optimistic future sci/fi, but I don't know if that's quite right. (She definitely made some optimistic choices in this book in a way I appreciate and her author's note says more.)
I think she really takes a neutral approach to technology and asks about what might happen given how people (who are both deeply good, pretty despicable, and also deeply human in her books) might interact with/use/misuse/deploy technology.

I rec them to anyone! And it's interesting living in this "maybe it can work out" kind of future for a little while....more

This one is less horror than the other book of hers I read, and I read this before traveling to CDMX. It's been fun to think about since the visit - not so much for city landmarks but just the feel of the place.
I also really enjoyed this mythology of vampires. Very interesting!...more
I tried, because I was surprised by liking Circe, but, I've read the Illiad, maybe more than once, and this didn't feel like it added much.
To be fairI tried, because I was surprised by liking Circe, but, I've read the Illiad, maybe more than once, and this didn't feel like it added much.
To be fair, I didn't get that far into it, and will recheck from the library at some point because I'm curious how the author will handle the end given that Patroclus is the narrator.
Also, I was recently reminded of the video game Hades which I thought had a more interesting (if still very modern) take on Greek mythology....more
