I really loved book 4-5 so I don't know why I didn't enjoy this one. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood or maybe I have grown out of it. I gave the whole series and all novellas 5 stars up to this point. But this just felt absolutely pointless in every way! Juliette did nothing, Warner was an asshole, Adam was there for like 2 secs and he was an idiot. Juliette gets kidnapped again in a repeat of previous books. I didn't care about any of the characters anymore. Not even Warner who in this one left me honestly wondering why I ever loved him so much. The ending felt really thrown together and confusing and the epilogue was just awkward and I was wondering, is this really what we need to see in an epilogue? wtf? Im so glad its over but just really sad it had to go this way.
Also this one was from the alternating POVs of Juliette and Kenji, which seemed kind of weird to me. I know a lot of people love Kenji. And although I like him, I never had strong feelings about him. He was a strange choice because he was not particularly important to the story. He was just there, like he always is, but not playing a crucial role....more

I loved this so much! It really wasn’t what I was expecting at all. I kept hearing about how this had magic, but it didn’t feel like magic at all. It’s basically a dystopian with a pandemic and people with mind powers. And lots of intrigue. Also not as much romance as I expected. There was definitely a romance between the two main characters, Noam, who is bisexual, and Dara who I assume is gay. But it sort of takes a backseat to the intrigue plot line.

I was not able to recover for the whole length of the book. I was constantly shocked and horrified by one things after another. And in the end I still do not fully know how I feel about any of the characters actions.
My favourite POV was Ephraim. His actions were mostly bad but I understood why he did things. My next favourite was Lyria. I started out hating her because she hated the new Republic. But I grew to cautiously like her but still be very interested in her chapters. Cautiously because I feel like she was always just one step away from completely snapping. Then there is Darrow. His chapters had me very nervous. I have no idea what he is doing, which makes me very tense. But I will read further before passing judgement. Of course I love Darrow, but I did not understand him in this one at all. And lastly there is Lysander. I had heard all about how everyone hates him, and now I can see why. The most infuriating thing about him is that he keeps claiming that he only wants peace and to save the solar system from Darrow. But he is a hypocrite and going about it all wrong. I would actually hate him less if he were more like Roake and was actually against Darrow's ideals rather than just the war itself. But I suppose I will still learn more about his motives in the next books. I can only imagine how much more I will hate him going forward.
This book gave me so many feelings, it is either my most favourite of the series so far, or my least favourite. ...more

It took the overdone dystopian genre and did something totally amazing with it. Book 1 had elements of Gattaca and The Hunger Games in it. This one has a lot more elements of the Ender's Shadow series and Darrow especially reminds me of The Wheel of Time's hero, Rand al'Thor. Both heroes go to really dark places in their minds because of what they are willing to do to save the world. They do things they truly hate but think the price of their own soul is worth it to accomplish their goal. It was one of my favourite aspects of the WoT series and I am so glad to find another series that explores this.

This was a post-apoc. It focuses on The Outpost, which is a settlement somewhere in the wilderness, run by The Admiral. The book is from the POV of Poe. Poe is a machinist who designed a boat called a dredge that mines the bottom of the river. Almost the whole book is set on the dredge. Poe is the captain of the dredge as it goes down the river, mining for gold for the Admiral. Poe doesn’t know why the Admiral wants the gold and she doesn’t care. All she cares about is revenge for her boyfriend who was killed 2 years before by raiders/drifters. Poe designed the dredge’s defenses to maim and kill anyone who attempts to board the dredge. The boat is eventually boarded anyway. And of course the drifters tell Poe things she didn’t know about the Admiral and what he’s done. She has to choose a side.
Poe is very closed off and stoic. Not just because of grief, but it’s her personality. She’s socially awkward and introverted. But also, her grief for her lost boyfriend and need for revenge has become her whole personality. In the end there is some hope. Poe has learned to move beyond it a bit and there is a tiny little peak at a future for her and a new potential romance. But this is not a romance. The focus is Poe as a character and her journey.
The writing in this is very beautiful and smooth and easy to read. I remember that about Matched. I really like Poe and seeing her growth. But the story was very contained, with a small scope, and not super engaging. And it really annoyed me that Poe was only 17, and a boat captain and trusted member of the city leader’s inner-circle. It’s like trying to believe that the Six of Crows were 17. Why do authors keep doing this? What do they have against 20-somethings? ...more

TheI'm not sure how much more of this series I can take. It is so dark and disturbing that a lot of the time I am not really enjoying the experience. There is so much death, massacre, genocide, the killing of innocents, friends killing friend, mass graves, and the torture of children. The nature of the violence in this series makes it harder to stomach than usual fantasy violence. And on top of that this book was really slow and not as interesting as book one. I am questioning whether I want to continue this series....more

(view spoiler)[So the president assigns Cia the task of assassinating all those involved in the testing, and when she finally confronts Dr. Barnes, he tells her that it was all a test to see if she would be strong enough to take down the president. And that she will have to kill him as part of the plan. He says that the president has been pushing for more testing.
So this doesnt make sense at all. Dr. Barnes has been running the Testing for decades and didnt have a problem with it. So apparently he was like, "Ive been killing 50 kids a year all my life and that was fine, but now the president wants me to kill 100 a year. Thats a step too far, so I must sacrifice my life in an elaborate plot in order to stop it." What?!
Also, Cia spent a lot of this book talking about trying to stop Dr. Barnes and how there is a lot of bureaucracy involved when trying to change The Testing. So that should have been true even if it was the president trying to make changes. There should have been an easier way for Dr. Barnes to try and stop her without having to kill himself.
