The first book was pretty interesting and the universe wasn't revealed entirely so it was a tease, which was fun.... But then when the big reveal came it was too damn depressing and I'm already into the second book and I wish it was better but I'm stuck with this cheap story that I have to finish because that's how I am about books sometimes. Anyway, "disappointing" is the word. I would only recommend this book to people who love the post-apocalyptic genre so much that they literally have read every other book in that genre except this one... And also if they enjoy hazing bad books for fun (which I kinda do like doing actually). If it's a rating out of 5 stars I would give it a solid 2 star rating, because it was better than reading Delirium....more
3 stars because I don't think I'll read it again, but I definitely enjoyed reading the story. I could see it becoming a movie. Good sequel to "The Giver". I think you can even read this one second (in the quartet), then go back and read "Gathering Blue" and "Messenger." That's what I would recommend to people who I didn't think would finish "Gathering Blue," because you can barely tell it's in the same universe as "The Giver" so it's discouraging.
I loved that this book went back to the community. I didn't realize it would jump around so much, so I WAS hoping it would explain what happened to the Giver...
Here's my post-reading-all-four-books back-to-back comment: So really, if you think about it, the first book should be called "The Receiver" because this entire series is tied to Jonas, and the Giver just gets lost along the way in the story telling.
So the first book is called Jonas (The Receiver) The second book is called Kira. (Gathering Blue) The third book is called Matty. (Messenger) And the fourth book is called Gabe. (Son)
...essentially. Except that the first book is called "The Giver," which seems totally wrong now. *Sigh.*...more
Enjoyed reading it. But it did NOT satisfy any loose ends from "Gathering Blue."
How did Kira help make changes in her village to make the homeplace mEnjoyed reading it. But it did NOT satisfy any loose ends from "Gathering Blue."
How did Kira help make changes in her village to make the homeplace more congenial? Magic?
What happened to the wood carver, Thomas, and the little Singer? And the dude who presumably killed their parents to steal their gifts... What's his name. What happened to him?
And what about the ending? So... Kira comes to Village. Does she and Leader hook up or what?
Why is the dog's true name Frolic? It should have been named "Scamper." Seriously, lol how many times Lowry used "scampering" to describe Frolic's behavior.
Am I missing part of the book? It just ended really abruptly and didn't explain enough of the old Homeplace.
Maybe this book should be read before "Gathering Blue" as prequel, because that book was well put together and this one just leaves me wondering what more.
And I already started reading "Son" and it's back in Jonas's community, so I know it has nothing to do with Village. (Or does it? Can it?)
Good writing. It was so easy to keep reading. Just that "hang on a minute here" feeling at the end is not awesome....more
I was rereading "The Giver" and realized there are sequels! Now I'm on a mission to finishing the quartet.

I was expecting "The Giver"-verse and I didn't get it.
But this book is good as a stand-alone novel. In the sense that I enjoyed reading it and I was excited to read more every day. I had to get over the fact that I wasn't going to read about the community or Jonas or Gabriel. I felt gypted, and then, like I said, I got over it and enjoyed the book.
If I really want to keep reading a story, that's when I give it 4 stars. That's how I felt while reading this book... so I can't deny it's entertainment value even though I'm NOT saying it is without flaws. I just prefer not to think that much about the flaws after a satisfying experience. Maybe after I finish the next two books I'll analyze the series as a whole. But right now I'm content....more
