I didn't care for the fact that some of the characters who were main ones, seemed to not be in this one. That being said though, there were some new characters and some characters that took bigger roles in this book. I did enjoy that. There were tons of twists and turns along the way and there was humor that made me laugh while reading. I simply love this series and I just love the Harry Dresden character. He just seems so real to me now after reading so far into the series. I love seeing what he gets drug into next and how he manages to get out of trouble by being his goofy, honest, self. Butcher does an amazing job making the words come to life through amazing writing. He simply flows right along from first to last word. Such a talented author by far!...more

After a couple books in this series that were a bit disappointing to me, I had hopes of improvement from this book. I was bit disappointed! This book was packed full of adventure and action and mystery and even a tad bit of family dynamics. The characters were developed more in depth. The characters I came to know and love were actually IN this book! I must say, after some worrying that I would have to abandon this series, I was pleasantly surprised and a bit relieved to see that I can continue reading on in this series with love for it! A few twists in this book shocked me very much! I won't spoil, bit you must read this book and see what Harry learns!! It's shocking and amazing for him! This is a must read! Great Sci fi mystery!...more

I have loved this series very much, I struggled with part of the last book, but was excited to continue on anyway. This book was very much disappointing for me. I thought it moved very slowly and it didn't really have the action that I was used to from the first 3 full books and part of book 4. I really had a rough time even wanting to read on in this book. I feel like there wasn't even much in the development of the characters in this book. Kind of like Butcher hit a writers road block when doing this book. I did finish it because I do like the series and I have high hopes that the next book will reconnect me with my enthusiasm in reading it. If not, I fear I may have to drop the series from my reading list. The last 3 chapters of this book did pick up some, but still not with the luster I was used to from his other books. I can only hope book 6 is better for me.
I felt like the characters that have been staples in the series were set aside somewhat in this book. I also felt like there was so much explaining and details of this or that, that the action was forgotten....more

I felt like the whole book was just "off". There was a new character, who seems to only be in this book, or at least that's how it looked from how she left this book. There wasn't quite the action there was in the other books of the series. There also were a few more lull points, points at which I felt like there were a lot of words I was reading, but nothing was really happening or coming of them. I also wasn't crazy about the fact that Murphy was less of a part of this book, for the most part. The relationships weren't as well worked on either for any of the characters. I felt like this was a book written at which point there was moments of writers block for the author. Now, there was enough to keep me plugging through the lulls and moments I wasn't so sure anymore. The end section of the book was more "normal" and what I expect out of this series and author. I was glad it ended on a "high note" for me as a reader or I may not want to continue reading on in the series. ...more

I must say the ending of the book kind of through me for a loop though. I didn't see that coming at all. I also must say, I'm not sure how I really felt about it. Guess I have to read on and see what happens with everything I am wondering about. Great read and a fairly fast read....more

I love the new characters and the new drama that comes Harry Dresden's way. I am finding he just doesn't know how to stay out of some kind of huge trouble. He just is one of those guys who seems to attract trouble without really even trying. Comes with being a wizard I suppose. I loved watching the continued development of the relationships of the characters and watching them grow. The more I read, the more I learn about the characters who are continually in the books. I also love how this may be a book that is continuing a series, but it could very well be read as a stand alone book too. Butcher does a great job recapping just enough, but not too much that if you did read the other book you would feel like it is too much "rehashing". This book was "edge of your seat" excitement from beginning to end! I can't wait to read on in this series! ...more

I quickly learned that this was no "ordinary" Sci-Fi. This was more of a Sci-Fi/Murder Mystery type of book. The plot was amazing and the way in which this book was written was even more amazing! This book was so fast paced, I simply couldn't put it down. There was action and adventure on every page! Oh my gosh, and the characters!!!.....simply to die for! I loved how well developed they were and how much they were built upon as the book went on. Page by page I came to love the whole concept of the book more and more. It is a mystery book that is a bit different type of twist to it. It's not your "typical" mystery book of someone is recently murdered and it goes from there. This is a book that lets you learn more about the main character as you learn about the mystery end of the book too. I loved how well I got to know the characters in this book, without it seeming like it was too much details on them. It was just enough. The mystery end was great too. It kept me guessing right up to the end. Every time I thought I just had to know what the end result would be, I would read the next page and find I was wrong again and had to re-think my views.

She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and now she is in a real pickle. She can't tell the police chief the truth, she was in the wrong and the chief is her new found boy crush's Dad. How would that look? Besides she has read every Sherlock Holmes book at least twice, she can figure this murder out on her own, she just knows it. Teenager or not, she is sure she can do it. Trouble is, solving mysteries is way harder than she read about in her books. Can she really solve the murder she is hoping to solve? Will it be her that is being investigated next...for murdering or being murdered.
This was a good book, but I have to admit, it wasn't one that was a fast read by any stretch of the imagination for me. I didn't want to toss it aside to the "give up on" pile, but it wasn't one I was drawn to read on in either really. I wanted to see what happened, but I thought it took a long time to get there. The characters were pretty great though, which is why I kept on reading. I also loved the unique spin to the book of the teen girl working to solve the murder and purely on guidance from her favorite mystery book set. The descriptive words and writing was also a highlight of the book to me. It was very easy to picture what was going on and where in this book. So all in all a good read, but not a great great great read in my opinion.

Things only get worse for them when Bo's car breaks down and they are forced to pull into an old home to use a phone for help. They soon find that they are alone in the house waiting for the auto club, but a storm outside may delay their rescue. Soon odd things start happening in the house, things that are making the four teens realize they need to help each other and stick together to make it to the rescue from the auto club. Lisa discovers things in the house that shouldn't be scary, but are just down right terrifying when the setting is so dark and dreary. All the teens want is to go home, preferably soon and even more preferably alive. Someone seems to be in this spooky house, but they never really show themselves. Who is in the house and do they mean the teens harm? What about the little old lady that owns this house? Is she really stuck in town because of the weather or did she come home and come to some harm by the mysterious someone in her home? Is the someone in the home a hitchhiker or are they someone more mysterious than that....more other worldly?
This book had me from the first word on the first page all the way to the last word on the last page. I was absolutely sucked into this book and story. This author absolutely nailed the bullseye in the writing and flow of this book! I was so into this book by the wonderful descriptions given that I found myself jumpy as I read because of how focused I was on what was going on in the book. A noise would happen in my own home as I was reading and I jumped thinking I was in the story. The characters were so realistic and fun and so well developed that I felt they were real people that I knew of. They all were so different, yet all so much alike. I loved the bonds they started to form as the book progressed. This was a bit different than most mystery books I've read, but in a great way. It wasn't this .... so and so was murdered and now we must find who done it.... it was a what is happening here and what is really going on in this house and with these teens mystery. I loved every minute of it! Nice change of pace in my reading. The ending was a bit of a disappointment to me, as it left some things unanswered, but all in all my love of the rest of the book outweighed the way things ended.
If you like mysteries with a twist, this is the book for you. This is a great book for young adults and adults and is a great easy breezy read. I highly recommend this book!!!

Alison isAlison, her daughter, and her ghostly friends/roommates are finally getting the business of their home becoming a guesthouse off the ground. Alison is excited to have her first guests arriving for a week long stay. She couldn't be happier, things seem to be looking up! That is until a prominent local woman drops dead in her living room. Now Alison has to put her newly acquired PI license to use and try to solve the whole mystery behind how this woman came to die in her house. She soon is trying to balance a murder investigation, being a good Mom, and being a great host to her guests. Her ghostly housemate, who happens to be a PI also, is great help to her, but he is limited on his help as he is unable to leave her property. Soon Alison finds that there is much she never knew about the small town she is living in again. To top it all off a popular TV show has set up shop in and around her home for filming. Good money and good for getting word out about her guesthouse, but also a pain in her rear end. Especially now that one of the cast has gone missing and they want to hire her to find her. Can she find a lost cast member and a murderer? Are they in any way connected? How will people like hearing things they don't understand? Can Alison really solve a murder without becoming a ghost herself?
I simply could not pass up reading this book! I simply loved the first book in this series, so I had to continue on when I saw this book. I read them in order, but they would make great stand alone books also. The second one gives enough insight when needed, that you would never be left confused. It may make you want to read the first book out of curiosity, but it wouldn't be a case of having to read it to understand this second book. This author did not disappoint me at all. I went into this book with high hopes and expectations because of how much I loved and enjoyed the first book I read in this series. I was not disappointed at all. The same wonderful descriptions, writing, and characters were in this book as with the first one. The characters grow more in this book and you get to learn a bit more about some of them, which was wonderful. This book had me hooked from page one all the way to the last word on the last page! Never a dull moment! If you love mysteries with a paranormal twist to them then this is the book for you by far. It has a wonderful balance of the paranormal side and the living people side and how they all work together. Alison is one of my favorite characters I have read about in a long time. She is a super independent woman who knows what she wants out of life now and will do anything to get it for herself and for her family and ghostly friends too. Highly recommend this read!!!

She got the house for a steal of a price, but maybe there is good reason for that...as Alison soon learns. There is a lot of work to be done before it is even live in ready, much less ready to be rented out to tourists. Alison is not put off by this though because she is a wiz at handyman, or handywoman, work thanks to her father teaching her from little up. Soon she discovers that she may not be alone in the house, and she's not referring to her daughter either. After a run in with a bucket and a ladder, she discovers she can see ghosts....not from her meds either, real ghosts....in her house. Soon she is mixed up in an investigation to help these ghosts find out who killed them. She's no detective, but she did take acting courses in college, so that must come in helpful some how when she's digging around for answers. This is an old crime though, so can she possibly keep digging around without the killer noticing or caring that she is snooping? Won't this put her and her daughter in danger? What secrets does this small town and its people in it really have? Even her own Mother and her own daughter seem to have secrets! Can she find a killer before the killer snaps and "takes care of her"?
Oh my gosh! I simply LOVED this book! The paranormal end with the ghosts was very well written and the mystery end of it was edge of my seat amazing! The descriptions in this book had me looking around my own home in wonder because they seemed so real and so intimately described. The writing just flowed right along throughout the whole book. I never had a moment that I wanted to put down the book. I wanted to keep reading until the end, but alas life just doesn't always allow that. When I was reading this book, it was as if my own world stopped and I was transported into the one that I was reading about. I could see the house, the people, the cracks in the walls....I could smell the paint, the dust, the fresh air....I could feel the warm breeze. I have never had a book that was so intense for me and so real to me before. This is due to amazing writing on the author's part that's for sure. The characters were nothing to sneeze at either. They were simply amazing! I felt like I was able to become friends with some of them and others know enough that I didn't want to be friends with them. They were so well developed and so complex, yet easy to relate to or get to know. There is so much I want to say about this book, but I am not one to give spoilers, so instead I will leave it at the point of this....you just need to read this book! I mean it, don't let this book go unread! If you love mysteries and you are also a fan of some paranormal twists, this is definitely the book for you!

He quickly is brought down from his happiness when they tell him that they are traveling for work over the summer and he is actually going to stay with his great aunt instead. He is less than thrilled with this little "adventure", but soon realizes that his Aunt Ethel is not just another little boring old lady.....oh no, she is quite the lady indeed, as is her property she lives on. Soon Josh is enjoying the old treehouse, helping with dishes, watching his Aunt Ethel care for his other Aunt Florence...who just happens to be a peacock, figuring out the mystery of an old metal box that looks to have been buried years and years ago, and helping his new friend bury his leg bones with the rest of him...seeing he is a ghost. Why does this ghost haunt the treehouse? Where did the metal box really come from and who's is it?
This book was probably the best read I have had in awhile! I can't give too much description without ruining something for someone, but I will say this is a book that never has a dull page! The descriptions were amazing, I felt like I was right there with Josh as he explored things and encountered things. I actually was so drawn into the book that I felt Josh's emotions. As for the flow of this book, it would be equivalent to a raging river! One thing to the next to the next. I absolutely loved the characters in this book too. How could I not come to love the quirky, fun, caring, and carefree Aunt Ethel or the adventurous, funny, sometimes dramatic Josh?! And Willie the ghost was a huge favorite of mine! If what you are looking for is action, adventure, and a book that is a great read and a real page turner, then this book is very much for you!

This was a quick, easy, yet very fun read for me. I sat down and ended up reading this delightful book all in one day. I found this to be such a fun read with so many funny things that happened in it too. I loved the descriptions used in the writing of this book! I felt like I was right in the thick of it with Tom. The characters were fun too! I loved how they really became so well developed in such a relatively short book/time. This was a light little mystery read. If you like a bit of mystery and love the thought of paranormal and ghosts this is very much the book for you! I highly recommend this book for any reader, young or old.

This is the draw for a group of tourists who want to see the working alpaca farm. Kelly and her friends agree to be the "guides" for this tour, what they did not agree to was walking right onto a murder scene. Someone has murdered Vickie, the questions are who and why. Kelly has her own things to attend to, being she inherited a huge running ranch from a relative. She is no ranch hand and has to decide what to do with the ranch, the animals, and the hired help that keep it running. However, being the ever curious accountant she is, Kelly can't help but become deeply involved when she is asked to help settle the accounting matters for Vickie's estate. Soon she is drawn into the worst who done it she can imagine. The murderer has killed twice to keep secrets just that; secret. So will Kelly be safe trying to solve the murders? Who could have such anger in their heart to kill for a secret?
This is the second book in the series and I just had to continue reading the series after book one. I must say, however, that I was a tiny bit disappointed in this book. It really hit the ground running and then seemed to fizzle out and then picked up again at the end. What do I mean by fizzled out? Well, it's like the murder happened and then instead of following the murder the book kind of veered off to follow more of what was going on with the ranch Kelly inherited and the trip to see said ranch. Now, I realize it all kind of played a part in the continuation of the plot, but I just felt it didn't have the drive there for me to want to continue reading. I did keep going, but it was slower going, as I didn't really feel there was that, cant put it down, feel. Once I got through the middle of the book, it did begin to pick up again and the last section of the book was easy to keep reading to see what happened. The writing, as far as descriptions, was great. The characters were also great. The characters and their development is what, I believe, kept me reading on. I enjoy seeing where they are all headed and who they are all becoming as the book, and the series continued on. All in all this was an ok read, just a bit disappointing for me in the middle.

Problem is, his day is only going to go from bad to worse once home. His sister, Zoe, has friends over and they decide that Zach is the perfect target for a new online show they want to start. So he is duct taped and gets a makeup make over. Yuck! To make matters worse his sister's friend is eating his cake. Then things go wild when zombies appear. Where did they come from? Is everyone seeing these zombies or just where they live? Is there a way to get away from them? Is there a cure for if you become a zombie? Zach really hopes there's a cure because his sister was bit and is now one of them. His parents will be so mad...if they are still humans that is.
I thought this was a pretty amazing read. I picked it up to read because it was a favorite of my son's when he got the series as a gift. I picked it up and within two days I had it read. The pace of this book is amazing! It takes off right away and doesn't stop, not even on the last page. It's away book that is so descriptive you feel like you are living it with the characters, which doesn't always happen in young adult books. I loved the characters too! Zach, Madison, and Rice are just hilarious and are just so fun to read about. I love the development of the characters too. They really grow a lot in this book, from kids who don't get along well at all, to kids that are all about helping each other to survive and stay strong.
I very much recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick and amazing read. I loved the Zombie aspect of this book. It was like a horror movie in book form, but with comedy sprinkled in to make it less terrifying while reading. If you want a good young adult read this is it!!! I think I may have to pick up the next book in the series just to see where things go from here.

She has lost her Father to cancer and her Mother is hardly ever around because of working so much to make ends meet. Her brother Stephen is pretty much useless to her now, even though they used to be great friends. Gilda has taken up some odd hobbies....aka professions in her mind. She is a spy, mostly on Mr. Plaid Pants at the gas station; she just knows he is up to something, always wearing the same clothes and all. She also fancies herself a psychic investigator. She believe she can communicate with the dead...you know; ghosts. It's summer break and her best friend is headed away to Band Camp and she has no other true friends. Hearing about other classmates summer adventures, and not wanting to be left out, Gilda soon comes up with a story about going to visit a long lost Uncle in San Francisco at his mansion. This starts out as a concocted story of hers, but soon she really is on her way there. She is amused to find out that he also has a teen daughter and hopes to make a new friend. Once there she learns that the mansion is haunted and the tower connected to the house is also haunted, by her Uncle's sister who committed suicide by jumping from the towers top window. Soon Juliet, her Uncle's daughter, and Gilda do become friends and decide to investigate what really happened to Aunt Melanie. Was it really a suicide? What is Gilda's Uncle really hiding in that tower, now that it is locked and boarded up? Why will no one ever speak of Aunt Melanie? Can Gilda really talk to ghosts and be able to talk to Melanie too? Some secrets are said to be secrets for a reason, is this one secret that should be left alone?
I must say I did enjoy this read. It was a bit different than I expected, but in a good way. It was a mystery book that was "light" to read. What I mean is, there was not a lot of hard drama the was mysteries can be in adult fiction form. It was a mystery; one that I very much enjoyed and couldn't put down, but without all the murder, blood, gore, and huge drama with the characters. I just loved the character of Gilda Joyce! She is just this quirky young lady who doesn't care what anyone thinks of her or of her psychic investigator hobby. She is who she is and if someone doesn't like it, well, that's just too bad for them. She is a strong character for being a young teen girl. She is a, "take life by the horns" type of girl and I just loved that about her. She sees what she wants and makes it happen no matter what anyone tells her. Juliet was a great counter character to Gilda. Juliet is the shy, quiet, keeps to herself kind of teen girl. She too has few, if any, friends and is who she is. She is a lost soul in a way because of how her family is. Her parents are divorced and she wants nothing more than to get answers to what her Aunt Melanie was like, apart from her memories she does have of her, but no one will talk about her and only gets mad if she tries to bring her name up. I loved all the characters, but these two were my favorite ones. I loved the friendship they eventually learned to have too.
The plot was very well written. These two teen girls band together to figure out deep dark family secrets, even if it means they get into huge trouble. The book flows very well from the start of the book right up to the end of the book. I had many laugh out loud moments too as I was reading. I could just see Gilda in her "psychic seance" costume and it just cracked me up! I loved how vivid the descriptions were in this book. I could picture each and every event, costume, setting, and character with great detail from the descriptions given. If you are looking for a great mystery read without all the blood and gore details this is the book for you! An easy and very fun read for me that's for sure!

I really am not sure how to really review this book without giving too much away. I also am unsure what words I really want to use to describe what I thought and felt while reading this book. Now, you may be thinking...uh oh, was it that bad? The answer is NO! It was a wonderful book! It was a book that I really connected to. I could relate 150% to the character of Joanie. The situation, the ex, the feelings about everything she is going through, the confusion she has about things but doesn't know why. I could understand it all! Here she is a woman who loves her ex, but knows it just isn't a good idea to be with him because they just don't seem to work. She is unsure how to move on, but knows she can't stay with him at the same time. She worries about her kids, herself, and even the well being of her ex. They may be exes but she still cares about him deeply and would never want to see him hurt. The other characters were wonderfully developed too. I really felt like I got to know them all in a deep friendship way. I loved how there wasn't a lot of other stuff going on in the book. There was the main plots and that was it. They were focused on with great depth and detail and that made them turn into amazing situations. The characters, the plots, the details in the writing, the book as a whole....all come together to make an absolutely amazing read!
It was a fast read for me because I kept wondering how it all would possibly work out, so I just couldn't put it down. It had suspense, humor, and romance. I must say I simply laughed out loud many times while reading this book, causing my family members to look at me funny at times. I think it's the greatest thing ever to find a book that can touch my emotions while I am reading it. To me, if an author can make me go through the emotions the characters do throughout the book, that is a fantastic writer!

Her ex husband seems to have disappeared, but not before stopping all payments on their daughters health insurance. Now she is not insured. Big deal? Normally no, but now yes...Abby has a brain tumor. Finally Abby seems ok and on the road to recovery, but they have no home to go back to. Char had to liquidate anything to make payments on the health bills. All she has left is a remote cabin in deep woods Minnesota. She knows her ex husband was into shady business and is worried he may have enemies looking for her too. Soon she is working for the neighbor guy and his brother with cleaning out an old cabin just to try and make ends meet. The last thing she expected was to find out he was a cop, she would become friends with him, or that she would even think of him as more. How can she be friends with a cop when her ex is missing and under odd circumstances? Will her ex show up and make things even worse by using her in one of his schemes again? How can she protect her daughter?
I read this book in a matter of two days. I loved it. I think what I liked best was the fact that it was a suspenseful read along with a bit of wonder and romance. The descriptions of the surroundings of the cabins and the cabins themselves was amazing! I felt like I was standing right next to them, looking at them. The characters were by far my favorite part of this book though. Max, Char, Abby, and the Dr. Wilson. They were so well developed and in great detail all throughout the book. They were not just described and left at that. They were described and then developed more through every chapter of the book, right up to the very last page. It was a joy to read this book. There was enough mystery to make me want to read on and enough romance to make my softer side happy too. I typically am not a romance reader, but I do love a great Avalon Romance book. They seem to have the perfect balance of suspense or mystery and romance.
If you are after a great read to fill your want of romance and mystery or drama, this is the book for you! It's also an easy and quick read. Once you dive in, you just have to keep swimming through it until you hit the shore on the other side of the ocean of reading.
