I knew this book had themes I didn't like, but I enjoy the authors writing enough that I wanted to give it a try. I find something so tedious about suspense-adjacent hroms - which this clearly is. I'm also not the biggest fan of the sexual themes of this series - I can tolerate them if they aren't part of the plot, but the author does a good job of weaving them through the story in a way that makes sense for the characters. That's wonderful... If you like that kind of thing.

Wasn't thrilled over the gargoyle story from Vol 1, but I figured I'd try her again. I just don't think I like Hart's writing style, but I can't completely put my finger on why. It's a bit plain, which is a bit odd for a genre called "monster romance". The story could easily be changed to be contemporary and not lose anything, and I think that's the drawback for me....more

It wasn't making sense to me that they were going to get together considering all the fall out that was going to happen. I can't take it anymore... Jacks has spectacular covers, but the writing it truly atrocious. I keep wanting it to match the level of cover art, and I think I need to just put their books down and back away slowly.
As constructive feedback, because I see so much room for growth (and love the ideas of these books if not the execution)- there's a lack of care given to character development beyond the things they do and say (he said this, he did that, he moved on to do this...) and there are so many points where I think I've missed something only to go back and reread the previous page and realize that no... there was just an insane leap of logic that has no accompanying explanation. There are also several parts where it almost feels like I've skipped an entire book of a series because the characters are referring to things as if the reader should already know how to fill in the blanks - but we can't because there is no context available in the form of previous worldbuilding. The dialogue though is what kills me - it's just so contemporary in style. Almost tik-tok pickup artist levels of awkward. Every time the H calls the h "baby girl" I physically cringe - not just because... ew. But because that phrase in a historical fantasy setting is so incredibly out of place.
I'm going to try my best not to pick up anything else by this author, but I already know there's one other cover that's speaking to me to read it... Ok ok, ONE more. ...more

This has been on my Kindle for so long, and I was always lukewarm about it which made me put it off. I really want to like Halle, but her stuff always seems to hit middle-of-the-road for me. I thought maybe vampires would be the thing I'd enjoy from her, but I just couldn't get interested in the story. With a name like that, I was expecting some goofy fun. That's is absolutely not what I got. I think the concept might have managed to be interesting, but the writing just wasn't it. A bit too much "this happened. Then that happened. Then we went here" for my taste. I honestly just got bored. Too bad - cause that title really made me think I was walking into bad harlequin, dragon edition.
Also, it is soooo long! Like, unnecessarily long. The "this then that" writing style went into a bit too much detail on what was happening....more

I'm not sure if it was flowery, or just poorly translated, but I couldn't figure out what was actually happening most of the time because we were stuck in the emotions of the characters. DNF'd about half way through because (view spoiler)[it made no sense that the child of someone who lived in the time of the main character wouldn't know simple words like "government". I'm reading a bunch of MC books right now, and for some reason the tone of this one didn't hit me right. It felt more like YA MC-lite. DecidedRead the first book in the series earlier in the year and wasn't a super fan but had a vague interest in finding out where it went from there. Decided to pick up the second before too much time passed, and just... No. I could never make sense of why these characters had any kind of attraction and it just didn't get better. The decisions they kept making regarding the politics of their city also seemed a bit unhinged at times. Combine that with a glacially slow pace that took us forever to get anywhere...
Why can't I find good post-apocalyptic romance? Does it exist anywhere?...more
