I thought previous book, ( #22 Stolen Prey) was a down book in this series. In "Silken"once again we find a disinterested protagonist in Lucas Davenport. His effort and enthusiasm is barely noticeable. Plus, the whole dirty political line by Repubs and Dems which primary plot was built upon was a total turnoff. Davenport is in a rut ......... "Silken Prey" came out in May 204. I hope Sanford has taken a long needed head clearing vacation sometime after these past couple yarns....more

"Buried Prey", is the twenty-first outing for protagonist Lucas Davenport. This fast paced riveting tale may be author John Sanford's best yet . "Buried Prey", spans thirty years (Mid 1980's- 2011), focusing on the beginnings of Davenport's career as a detective, and then his current position within Minnesota's BCA. It was in the mid 1980's when two young sisters, the two Jones girls went missing and were never found. The case went cold and the sisters were presumed dead. Davenport with just three years on the force and still patrolling in uniform managed to get involved in looking for the girls. After a wild few weeks the only suspect ended up dead. About this time Lucas was promised a promotion into plainclothes even though this case is going ice cold. July 2011, at a construction site where old falling down houses were being torn down for new progress a basement foundation is lifted exposing two skeletons bound together and wrapped into tarp. Without a doubt it's the Jones sisters. Davenport immediately takes control over the case upsetting his old ally Marcy Sherrill. Davenport with his statewide office must battle it out with Minneapolis top cop Sherrill. Luckily Davenport and Sherrill have plenty of history both personal and professional. The novel then peals off for almost 200 pages establishing the original history of the case and the long sad story of the one suspect. Then the yarn returns to 2011 so that Davenport and crew can solve this long buried mystery. In an intense heart palpitating plot that is very difficult to put down as Davenport solves his first detective case from more than thirty years prior. Along the way Davenport's team will lose a supporting character creating a twist that makes Lucas and his team focus harder on finding the original killer. Of the twenty-one Davenport books I've read from author John Sanford this one may be the best yet. five stars out of a possible five stars for, "Buried Prey". A must read in a must read series. check it out....more

Chock full of murder, mayhem, and criminal craziness, "Storm Prey", delivers from opening pages until it's final page. The gangs all here with Lucas, Weather, Virgil, and cohorts through just over 420 pages paperback. A fast paced adventure with non stop action with bad guys who are as dumb as they are scary. Lucas and Weather both have their hands full dodging bullets and bad guys at the hospital all the while as a head separation of conjoined twins takes place. Five stars out of a possible five stars. A really nice pick up from the last few outings of the Davenport's and company....more

Of the half dozen or so books I've read from author P.T. Duetermann this one is probably my favorite. This tale starts up somewhat slowly but warms into an interesting thriller towards the middle. All in all, the conclusion was pretty ridiculous. I had to snicker getting through the last 100 pages. At 420 pages paperback this one was easily about 75-100 pages too long. Author Duetermann is a wordy soul. The relationship between the protagonist and side kick made for some interesting reading. Duetermann can bring the reader to the very tip of an intense (or romantic) relationship and jump away too quickly. Three stars out of a possible five stars. It's an okay read if you're between series books from other authors. This one took me about six readings over five days to get through. Never found that passage that pushed me to knock of huge chunks of the book....more

Holmes got off easy dying in 1988. On one hand I'm glad I read it, but on the other it wasn't worth the effort. A generous two stars out of a possible five stars. Worst criticism of this tale would be that not one single character in this book is worth rooting for. Being 16 th book in series I wonder if author was burning out quality adventures for his protagonist. (?) At over 430 pages paperback it ran at least 150 pages too long. Two stars out of five possible. Leave this one alone on the shelf. I hope 17th book in series rebounds since I have it on my nightstand....more
