It was a hard book to finish. But by the time it's revealed what's going on and becomes completely terrible, I was at 72%. So I finished it. But if I'd known where it was going I would have DNF'd the book. The narration was pretty good though. ...more
Book Rating: 2.75- Kira goes back to her hometown to try to figure out the truth behind her mother's supposed suicide years before. This book was WAY Book Rating: 2.75- Kira goes back to her hometown to try to figure out the truth behind her mother's supposed suicide years before. This book was WAY too predictable! I predicted her mother's secrets, and I predicted the killer. They were just too nice and good to be true, doing everything right. The only thing I didn't predict was who she'd end up with! That was a twist. The only reason I didn't DNF was I hoped I was wrong that the killer would come out of left field, but no.
Narrator Rating: 4 stars The narrator was pretty good, they did well with the accents, at least to my Midwestern ears!

When a girl with a mental illness is bullied by a girl who's up to no good. Who will end up dead? And who's the killer?
Soapbox time! As someone with schizoaffective disorder, the MC's mental illness much more seems like she has that. The ability to completely disconnect from reality and hallucinations while NOT being manic are more signs of schizoaffective disorder. Which might not have been a diagnosis in the nineties, in which case the MC would probably have been labeled as both bipolar and schizophrenia. Okay off the soapbox.
(view spoiler)[ I was so glad that the MC wasn't the killer. As people with mental illness are more likely to be the victims of crime than the perpetrator. I could also see the reason Struts killed Greta. She was just pushed too far. As much as I HATE to victim blame Greta was a TERRIBLE person and pushed too many people's buttons. (hide spoiler)]
Overall, and okay book. With a pretty honest portrayal of mental illness, but I wish she'd labeled it properly. ...more

I didn't know who was going to be the one who was dead until the reveal. However, I guessed the who killed them part. I also say other parts of the story coming, mostly revolving around the settlement. I did like how the past with Tori's mom intersected with the now and Tori's life.
However, most of the characters weren't very likable, which made the book a bit harder to enjoy. Though all the narrators were excellent!
It was overall a good thriller with lots of twists and turns. ...more

I enjoyed this book a lot. However, I found Layla a bit difficult to like at times. She frustrated me in certain situations with her reactions. I had mixed feelings about the ending, since what was the cause of the problems in the room was never entirely clear, which was a bit frustrating, but the final part was also very good. I liked the diverse characters and the thoughts on immigrant parents and how they kind of get stuck in time. The romantic element was predictable. I wish the book had been longer, which is rarely a feeling I have in these types of books. Overall, a pretty good book! The narration was excellent....more
