She is the super good genius that is better than everybody in everything but apparently people don´t take her seriouly because she is a woman, although she is super famous, rich and has 39 nobel prizes.

I though that such a good work would represent faith of the editor in the works, or at least that people care. Ok, hmmm, not it is not horrible, but I think the 2-3 is how I feel, it is ok, but it has a lot of problems, but the 2,5 it is just because the unfullfilling feeling, as if you ordered in a restaurant and receives a McDoonalds. It is what you asked but a lot lesser than you expected. I am not suprised by the 3,5 average, I am a little bit surprise of the "goodreads choice awards" but then I remembered that they are all awful and almost a warning label.
Again, the book is not terrible, but the characters are lacking, the author just made a slasher Movie, and as it happens, thinks that slashers have to have idiots. Mel was specially unsuferable, acting like a child. Also Tomo was so annoying and (view spoiler)[his death was off screen so you can ´t even rejoice(view spoiler)[
Then very little happen, but I will compliment the author, it took a long time for me to notice that nothing was happening. And the horror of having someone with food poisoning when you don´t have water or medical care. the bad - after the reveal of the minor twist the story goes from mistery to action and really goes downhill, and all the tension disappears and it got real average or bad depending on taste. If it went in the horror direction it could have been a little gem....more

Many, if not almost all, don´t have a proper ending. The author opens up a big world and keeps adding story, but then writes itself into a corner because he doesn´t have the time to go smoothly to a closing. Many of the endings are confusing, alucinatory, don´t explain anything and are even against the theme that they were proposing.
For an example, one of the stories is just a Walkind Dead chapter - zombie survivors get into a farm, discover bodies - but then a stranger came, the story has to hush to finishing line, so the obvious evil stranger is evil, protagonist tries to run, stranger say that he is an agent of the old ones that for some reason want the protagonist back from a past that was never stablished before that she had in the city. Ends.
The story about the ring and smiling mosters was one of the few I would give proper 5 stars. The brain that wouldn´t die is kinda of average but ppl may like because of the twist - but it was clearly more of an alien/future distopy than really about eldritch horrors. The same about the cult that tries to call aliens and calls cthulhu. The old ones are not even the bringers of the end of the world, so the story is an ecology tale.
One of the most interesting is about the guards with VR glasses so they don´t see the abominations, but it completely changes everything in two paragraphs.
The story about the little prophet girl was also fun, but it was mostly fantasy.
I don´t know how those compilations are made but I assume the editor contacts several writers that he has relations with and ask them for a tematic prompt, and then they are all included, not regarding if the writing is actually good of if fits the theme....more

It was very fun not to have a "jaws mayor" scene, or that the assinine karen character either disappears or end up in flames.
But.... authors really have difficult keeping it up, doesn´t them?
After the midpoint things start to go south real quick... maybe it is just difficult because the timing was so quick, with things happening almost in media res, you can´t expect much more - it was fun because you didn´t follow your "average american family" - it is more like Godzillas old movies, where you follow the scientists and government.
Buuuuut after the midpoint the problems start to pile up and the interest to fade - most of what is going to happen already happened... and the characters that came and went are suddenly important and we are expected to care if they found their family. What?
Book, the deal was that we didn´t care and you wouldn´t spend our time trying to make us care... so in the second part of the game you pretend that we are invested in one of 30 protagonists family is very undeserved. And, as we are not following the common people in the park, is like you are watching the Rock abandoning his job to save his own family, real of course, but not exactly noble or professional if in every disaster everybody abandons their service....more
