Just a fun romp across and through the universe as only Adams can imagine. Arthur is confronted with a rather awkward problem by Trillian. Ford is now a restaurant critic and declares war on the Guides new owners. He is armed with a limitless credit card and he isn't afraid to use it. Nowhere near as amusing as the first few books but still worth a read. The ending was a bit 'meh'...more

I really need to make notes when I read but I can't be arsed. A robot Valet on a roadtrip across the dystopian desert of a fallen world. One droid on a journey of discovery to find itself, a Forest Gump in a Wall-e world. Humans are nearly extinct and Uncharles is teamed up with his own Jiminy Cricket character in the form of 'The Twonk" He/it is on some sort of religious pilgrimage to uncover and discover a purpose to his existence. Out in the Wasteland of what's left of the world he finds all sorts of strange things and is almost ended on a few occasions but is saved by either outside elements or some inner glitch with his programming. Lots of nods to other works are scattered among this tale, some I spotted and others I probably missed. Tchaikovsky is a bit hit and miss with me, I loved Children of Time trilogy, disliked The Cage a lot. I think I'll stick to the pew, pew stuff for now. ...more

Not with the writing or plot though. Once again Connie has created a masterpiece of a novel, it's an education to read all about the Blitz in itself, like a living history. The way she places the characters and settings are like watching a docudrama in full colour with Dolby surround etc.
The story could have been shortened by removing all the running around looking for each other, surely a time traveller would have some contingency plan set up for certain scenarios IE a safe house, so to speak, where one goes in that specific era in case you become stuck.
Got to the end and annoyed to find I've got to read another doorstop like tome to get the conclusion of the three historians plight.
The cover should have "Part One' on it somewhere.
I really can't be bothered at the moment, maybe in a few months time I'll read ALL CLEAR. I'm normally into pew, pew space opera type SF but have really liked the Oxford Time Travel tales. Until now....more

Reminded me of Clare North novel. Quite enjoyed it. Jeff dies right at the start at the age of 43 and his consciousness is shifted back to his 18 year old self, he alters his life several times as the replays continue and he goes slightly mad at times until he meets another replayer. Lots and lots of sex are rife in places with various people and his thoughts of eternal life or possible damnation, is he being punished, tested or toyed with by some higher power. It's never really answered at the end, like a Twilight Zone episode....more

A woman transformed into a spider and sent to a Prador conquered world where she fights a one woman/spider guerilla warfare until a chance at redemption is presented. Enjoyed this more than a lot of Asher's god tier protagonists that are unkillable and on a solo crusade to free humanity from some oppressive totalitarian government. Not as great as Prador Moon but good enough. Always love the Prador making an appearance, cool tech and high octane action and the body horror of cored humans and Thralls....more

Our first meeting with the superb Granny Weatherwax a most formidable witch and one helluva woman.
A great tale of Magic and how and when not to use it.
Pratchett captures the essence of a nine year old tomboy girl perfectly she's annoying, inquisitive, argumentative and adorable, he does it beautifully.
How the hell can he be so good?
Great to see the Wizards and their somewhat bumbling and well meaning sexism/misogynistic leanings taken down a peg or two, even if it means the plumbing will have to be updated.
The details and side characters who only appear for a paragraph or two are outstanding and could easily have a whole book written for them.

Each time you come across a gem or you finally notice the joke/pun that you've missed previously. A plot has reared its ugly head in Ankh-Morpork, possibly uglier than Nobby Nobs. Vetenari has been poisoned and Commander Vimes has to channel his inner Poirot. The local pub needs more sawdust as the landlord has found out Nobby's a Peer. Golems and fog confuse matters no end as two murders are investigated by Carrot and Angus. I'm certain there was a Dirty Harry scene played out somewhere. Poor Sergeant Colon is thinking of retirement and buying a farm and when he encounters a rampaging Golem he nearly buys it sooner than intended. Dwarves, Trolls, Vampires and whatever Nobby is are perfectly employed in the genius that is Sir Terry's creation of Discworld....more

This one is set just before the Prador War kicks off and revolves around disgruntled citizens that want to break away from AI control and start afresh, these are people that have pushed through and survived their ennui barrier. As always all is not as it seems, we mainly follow Ursala as leader of the colonists and the stories hops around in time from her pov (present, past & near past) which was a little off-putting for me. The dreaded civilization killer Jain tech rears its ugly head and the Prador make a welcome appearance (I love the fuckers) as a special guest star. Mainly about what makes us human and what is humanity blah blah at its core I think, I don't really go that deep into Asher's books I'm pretty shallow and am here for the tech, space battles and the gore!
