Without any qualifications- regardless of stage of life, I think this book is meaningful for wherever you are. 5/5 would recommend, and I’ll be getting a copy to read over the years.
One gem among many-

It gave me some needed context and helped me appreciate much of the book. Fanon wrote it in the last year of his life, dictated by his wife, so enough of it reads as stream of consciousness, making it difficult sometimes to follow his line of thought. One critique is that the central plot took a long time to develop, a lot of time was spent on flashbacks. I understand the intent- for the traumatized narrator, it’s difficult to communicate events directly, and in order to tell the story, the narrator circles around the experience. That meant the most powerful moments were in the last third of the book.
Overall a beautiful story and beautiful prose, would definitely recommend. ...more
