Whilst elements of the story were a bit inevitable, the event at the centre was a true story of what happened one night at the Bethnal Green tube station shelter - an event that happened to the writer's grandmother. Having read other reviews I recognise that Brown worked with a ghostwriter - the story is Brown's as was all the research and she hired a willing writer to work with her on the book, it is the book I am reviewing not the circumstances of its writing which is acknowledged - this an accomplished narrative - believable and in places moving....more

Narrative wise I had expected it to follow John through his life - especially given the blurb but this is not the case (This isn't really a spoiler). The book examines love, loss, grief and resilience against the back drop of science and politics - it is clever without being superior and I cried at least twice. Beautifully written and will be on my Christmas gift list for several people for Christmas. Read in one sitting - literally couldn't put it down....more

Not at all what I was expecting, stylewise - set in the 60s and about a separated woman who is breaking away from societal sexual constraints - I thought this would be a pro-freedom exploration of woman power but all the female characters are sad and used and it is all a bit bleak to be honest - the protagonist is not someone I felt any sympathy towards and the whole thing did seem to say, stay in your lane! I don't know how typical this is of O'Brien's work - I wanted to like it better....more
