A collection of longer Larocca stories with the longest one being the title piece, itself an ouroboros of traumas upon traumas (and a fitting theme ofA collection of longer Larocca stories with the longest one being the title piece, itself an ouroboros of traumas upon traumas (and a fitting theme of snakes littered throughout) that built up a really delicious slow dread. "Seedling," the second story, was reminiscent of something I'd read recently in a different collection, and so felt a little more predictable, but only for that reason. Third story "All the Pieces of You That Won't Easily Burn" started off strong, but threw a strange and disarming curveball at the end. The final story, "Prickle," also brought about its own disarming curveball, but one that felt more likely.
A fine collection; Larocca's good with prose in his longer stories, but there just seems to be a little missing from the endings in some places. ...more
