This book was OK, but it didn't live up to my expectations. Anna's diary didn't read like a diary, really. For example, at one point, she recounts talking to her friend about (and I'll paraphrase) "silly girlish things with the seriousness of grown women." At the time, she wouldn't have been thinking they were silly girlish things! Stuff like that. And some of the historical bits didn't line up. For example, Anna making someone cocoa by boiling the water and sprinkling on cocoa powder in 1911 when cocoa powder wasn't invented until the 1920s--not that peasant farmers would have been able to afford it even if it had been available earlier! And certain turns of phrase that wouldn't have been used. The lace making process was also all wrong. Those things bugged me more than they should have, maybe, but it kept me from taking the book seriously and would have been easy for the author to research.
I enjoyed Anna's story more than Sarah's. And it wasn't like the book bored me enough not to finish. The writing was OK. But it isn't something I'll remember next week....more
