Well, this book didn鈥檛 really synchronize with me. Look, Laura Dave is a good writer as evidenced in her more recent works. Unfortunately, this wasn鈥檛 one of her better efforts.
The story opened strong and had lots of potential. But ultimately, it wasn鈥檛 very thought provoking, it was predictable and had the air of a soap opera. If you like family drama all packaged in a bow, then this might be for you. For me, it was like a cheap wine that was sort of palatable but not memorable. 2.5 stars ...more

It鈥檚 about finding your voice and using it to stand up for what you believe in. It鈥檚 about courage.
There are three narratives: Freya, a costume maker in 1930鈥檚 Berlin, is against Nazism and decides to start her own little resistance preserving the stories that matter to her the most. Maggie, her great granddaughter is being trolled on social media despite being a successful journalist. She too, finds resilience and a way to develop her own quiet response. Finally, there is Ben, her great grandson, born with Down syndrome, who yearns to be independent. His story is an absolute delight full of hope an$ it brought me some joy.
But most of all, this is a story about family secrets. Maggie finds an old diary belonging to to her grandmother whirl helping her grandfather downsize and the contents are shocking. The question is, will her family read it?
This is an excellent dual timeline story with intrigue, suspense and just the right amount of tension.

Molly appears on an Anriques Roadshow type show with an old jewelled egg, believing it to be junk. She and her grandmother symbolically named it the Faberge. Only, it turns out to be an actual Faberge worth millions. As the egg is about to be sold, someone steals it and leaves Molly a threatening note. Molly must figure out what happened and why and in the process, learns a lot about herself.
In the age of consumerism, consumption and the desire for material things, this story brings the focus back to what matters most. It鈥檚 a warm, satisfying conclusion that reminds us that real treasures aren't always the ones with a price tag they're the ones that connect us to the people we love.

Nesting is about resilience. Ciara just wants a safe space for her three young children and she is stuck fending off a man who plays games and is manipulative as all get out. It鈥檚 easy to see how the system fails in these types of situations.
Dublin, like many other cities around the world, is in the midst of a housing crisis, which is juxtaposed against Ciara鈥檚 own personal housing and personal crises. Her abuser is hurting her physically but emotionally and she finds herself with nowhere to turn and no one is in a rush to help her.
This is an exploration of the choices people face when they are in abusive relationships. It鈥檚 really gut wrenching to read. Ciara has a lot of determination even though she spends a lot of her time terrified. But mostly, she has courage and watching her become a mother lion protecting her cubs is heartbreaking and inspiring.
The hype for this book is real and I鈥檓 so disappointed it isn鈥檛 short listed for the Women鈥檚 Prize....more

It follows Ruth, who has spent years trying, and failing, to save her daughter, Eleanor, from addiction. When Eleanor鈥檚 life spirals out of control, Ruth steps in to raise her granddaughter, Lily, even as she deals with the pain of watching her own child slip further away.
There鈥檚 no big dramatic ending or neat resolution, but that鈥檚 what makes it feel so real. It鈥檚 a story about showing up, even when it hurts, and finding small moments of warmth in the hardest times....more

When she decides to finally look at Frank鈥檚 personal library and notes, what she discovers is perhaps the greatest gift.
This is a charming and uplifting story of found family, second chances and the healing power of books. The writing is warm and inviting, and at times it felt like I sitting in the cozy bookshop, turning the pages of an old favorite. There are many books mentioned in the story and I鈥檝e actually read many of them.
I will say, there is a bit of a heavy focus on ADHD here and I found it a bit too much and it overpowers the main message I think. So for this reason, it didn鈥檛 resonate with me as much as The Memory Story. 3.5 stars.

In GreThis book intertwines two sisters from different time periods and shines a light on the centuries old plight of women鈥檚 suffering and survival. In Greek mythology, sirens lured sailors to their doom with their haunting songs. In this story, they call to dangerous men instead.
Lucy, traumatized by a betrayal and in danger of losing her spot in her journalism program, seeks out her sister, Jess, at her home in rural Australia. Only, when she arrives, she finds the place abandoned. Desperate to find her sister, she uncovers some unsettling truths she never could have envisioned.
In the second storyline, sisters Mary and Eliza are transported to Australia on a convict ship and away from the only home they have ever known.
It鈥檚 a very atmospheric and enlightening tale about resilience in the face of adversity and the power of familial bonds. There is definitely something for everyone here given that the story is part historical fiction, part mystery and part magical realism.
While it鈥檚 an engaging read, it doesn鈥檛 quite live up to Weyward for me. Still, it鈥檚 an intriguing and beautifully written novel. 3.75 Stars
