The writing was exquisite: it's not an easy feat to write from the perspective of a child, but this author did it beautifully. I think some may not like the open-ended nature of the ending, but I liked it. How this author made this story feel hopeful and depressing all at once, I don't know....more

I've been awaiting Gus and Teddy's story since the two were introduced, and the slow burn was worth the wait. I loved seeing them soften for one another and recognize they aren't the enemies they've painted themselves to be. However, this book is more than a romance: it's a love letter to fathers and daughters, especially single dads. I loved seeing Gus with his daughter and struggling to balance his responsibilities of being a single dad (for the summer) and being in charge of the ranch. Meanwhile, Teddy is feeling adrift in life and the weight of responsibility for taking care of her dad is heavy on her shoulders. I loved seeing these two, who both feel they are responsible for their family units, find home and comfort in one another....more

(I couK O'Neill continues to write such beautiful graphic novels. Their art is amazing, and this novel, in particular, reminds me of The Moth Keeper. (I could see these stories being set in the same universe.) The story is quiet yet radical as both kids grow and discover themselves in new ways. I loved the way O'Neill portrays these changes throughout the book. The setting was rich and I loved the overlying theme of connecting with nature and with the self.

This is probably one of the few books (if not only book)Even though this wasn't a five for me, this is probably one of my favorite books of the year. This is probably one of the few books (if not only book) I've read that actually made me feel scared while reading it. This is the perfect cocktail of glitch-in-the-matrix, sleep paralysis demons, and conspiracy theories. Somehow the author knew how to get all of my worst fears into one book! I think this book is so successful because it uses many real psychological phenomena to tell the story or "explain away" conspiracies. The Reddit threads throughout also add to this book and make it feel less like a one-off experience and more like a true horror. After finishing this, I immediately ran to Reddit to understand what happened and possible theories, but I'm still left with many questions. Apparently, there are rumblings of a sequel or connected book, and I'm very interested in reading that. As it is, I really enjoyed it but I can't give it a full five stars with all of the unanswered questions I have. I highly recommend it though, if you're looking for an interesting haunted house horror....more

I only know Kelly Bishop from Gilmore Girls, so it was a delight to learn more about her background in theater and her long and interesting life! I had no idea she had such a hand in the origins of A Chorus Line and I loved getting to learn more about her life off-stage and off-screen as well. It's amazing she is still working and all of the history she's seen in her lifetime. I loved this book and it was especially wonderful to hear it read by the author via audio. Highly recommend for any Gilmore Girls fan....more

I loved World of Wonders last year, but I have to say, I loved this one even more. Bite by Bite is full of delight after delight: a book you can savor in bite-size essays, or read over the course of a long summer afternoon. I originally planned to take my time with this collection, but I found myself not wanting to put this book down. Aimee, like so many poets, has such a way with language that her prose feel light and refreshing. These essays, speaking on both Aimee's life and delightful fruits, vegetables, desserts, and more tell the story of how important food is to not just our bodies, but to our lives and spirits. I found so much joy in this collection--but beware, you'll definitely be craving some delicious fruit by the end!...more

The family secrets, the sibling bonds and rivalries, the dog; I loved all of the elements of this book and the way they swirled together to create a story that is, like the quote, full of joy and of sorrow. I loved the perspectives of all of the siblings, as well as the use of Cassidy's story and Bernadette's letters to add mystery and intrigue. I was so invested the whole time about how these different storylines would come together, and it was so satisfying when it finally did. Jandy Nelson delivers such beautiful writing alongside a plot that is intriguing and wacky. I loved this!...more

This was such a delight. I was not expecting to love this so much, but it was just too cute. I'm a huge fan of small town romances, and this reminded me a lot of one of my all-time favorite series, the Lovelight series by B.K. Borison. The setting here was everything, and so much fun to read as someone who has recently moved out west. The couple had so much chemistry and I found it so tender to see Luke helping Emmy learn to get back on the horse (literally) after a bad fall. The spicy scenes were immaculate, but they weren't the force driving the plot forward and there wasn't any unnecessary third-act breakup or conflict, which I really appreciated. This book felt well-planned, and these characters felt like real people who had a history. This was the perfect fun romance book to distract me this week and I can't wait to read the rest of the series!...more

This was a phenomenal book, because it was more than a romance: this was a true love story, between two people dealing with messy trauma and lives and circumstances beyond their control. Justin and Emma fit together so well, but Emma's avoidant attachment style and major changes in Justin's life throws curveballs into their budding relationship. Still, they somehow manage to make it work and come together. Justin was such an amazing character with so much love for his family: I loved his loyalty and protectiveness over the people he loves and the lengths he went to for his siblings. Emma is a difficult character to read at some points, because she's just so avoidant of attachment or love because of her neglectful upbringing. Seeing how she eventually learned to face this trauma was satisfying, and I loved the way Jiminez brought this series full-circle at the conclusion of this book. ...more
