There was less depth to the story, the characters and even the contextual details. I read it without being particularly engaged with the material. This was just as well written as the previous books in the series, however I enjoyed it less overall. VERY interested to see what Book 5 will bring! I didn’t feel drawn to any of the characters. Nevertheless, there are many quality elements and I’m interested to see how the story continues. Many thanks to NetGalley for an arc of this book....more

I love the main character Stephen and his approach to life and the world of drucraft. He is managing to survive hostile situations, discovering talents he didn’t know he had, making allies and continuing his search for answers as to his dad’s whereabouts. Benedict Jacka really knows how to craft appealing underdog characters and to have his readers cheering them on. I loved this second in the series and am already craving the next one. I could not get into the world conceived, nor did the characters really engage me. The Bone Shard Empire was one of my absolute favourite fantasy trilogies so I was excited to receive this arc. I am beyond disappointed and yet if Stewart can work her magic in the next installment, I still feel the overall story arc could be rescued. Time will tell.
