It was a gripping look at the human will to survive in a world where survival seems almost impossible, and at the strains of human relationships in impossible situations. The story is always exciting and often brutal, and the hint of mystery in the beginning grows throughout the book to an exciting conclusion. The only thing stopping me from giving it 5 stars is, the main character often seemed a little too naive to be realistic, making the same mistakes over and over, and there was some head-hopping between perspectives that pulled me out of the story at times. But the story was compelling enough that those were minor issues, and I鈥檓 looking forward to reading the next book! ...more

The concept was interesting, and it introduced a very relevant moral dilemma that will only become more relevant as science progresses. The pacing was fast enough to keep me reading, and it was a thought-provoking read. I did wish that some of the characters were given a little more dimension, as some of the characterization felt a bit flat鈥攅ither all good or all bad鈥攚hich made aspects of the plot feel predictable and detracted from the moral dilemma aspect. That being said, I sincerely hope this author keeps writing. This book shows a lot of promise, and I鈥檇 love to read more from her as she progresses. ...more

It's a good idea, and a good introduction to London's history, but I really got a little tired of the story (over and over and over) of the Brave, Heroic, Intelligent Man who manages to seduce, conquer, and commit adultery with the Silly, Stupid, Manipulative Woman, who is brainless, yes, but prettier than all the other silly, stupid, and manipulative women in that particular chapter. In fact, I have a hard time remembering a chapter in which this does not happen. And there are a lot of chapters. ...more

I knew there was something, lots, underneath that I just wasn't seeing, and I could tell that whatever it was was deep and beautiful, but I didn't know how to see it. I still don't know if I understand the meaning behind the myth, but after several reads and several deep discussions, I think I've caught a glimpse at least. I really enjoyed this book, and it was extremely thought provoking. I think I'll have to read it again some day. It is a beautiful book....more

From the first time I read this book, Atticus Finch epitomized my conception of integrity. Every since reading it, I have had the idea in the back of my mind that if I could grow up to be that caliber of a human being, I would be proud of what I had become. And now that I am in law school, it has become even more relevant to me. Competition, stress, work, and finals aside, it gives me hope that becoming a lawyer could be what I always wanted it to be when I thought about coming to law school. And I love the chance to look at the world through the eyes of Scout, and realize that sometimes the ability to look at people, things, and events in an unjaded and uncynical way is the only way to really understand what life is about....more

In a large way, it changed the way I look at the world and myself and interact with people. It has a few skipable sections, but it is a very thought-provoking book. And, despite the 1000-some-odd pages, it has a gripping storyline. Definitely one of my all-time favorites. That being said, I don't agree with everything she says. But I think that's why I liked it so much. It was well-written and compelling enough to make me question some of the viewpoints I had taken for granted my whole life. And I think that that is often a very good thing. I still hold a lot (maybe most) of those viewpoints, but I understand a lot more why I feel the way I do about socialism, etc., because this book forced me to take a good hard look at my ideas and question them. A friend of mine once said that this is a book that will take your childhood beliefs and shake them all out, and give you the chance to examine them and decide which ones you will put back in, and why. After reading it, I agree. ...more
