Counselling for Toads is a book that shouldn't be taken too serious, especially concerning how therapies in real life work. I saw myself agreeing to many aspects of what the Heron (the therapist) said, but I often had the feeling like it could have been said and structured in a better way for the therapy. The therapy methods aren't ones you will find in a real therapy session. The methods are a bit unrealistic as one can not accomplish a full recovery (especially if they feel suicidal) in just ten sessions. Of course it depends how good the methods work, but it felt a bit rushed that Toad just felt great again after the therapy sessions had just a few of many ways to help someone discussed (I do understand that depending on the needs of the client that each therapy session can look individually different, but this just looked like a book that tries to have a happy ending even though Toads development made a jump that made no sense for me). The methods were on such a surface level as I already knew about them and I believe many others do too without having to read this book and it just felt to me personally like it wouldn't really help anyone. (Read below to find out which methods there are). The whole book is about three different egos, which explains how one acts towards other people and oneself and the way they might progress with their life or stop learning. (The child ego, the parent ego and the adult ego). After that Toad is getting teached of ¡®games¡¯ that form ones own life position. Either they are using it to either make themselves feel smaller and more miserable or by taking power and control over someone else (or by not playing games at all, which means taking no advantage of anyone). The way these methods were described were unprofessional and sometimes seemed to be even false. There were unprofessional words that seemed to be made-up for the novel and not truly psychological, for instance, ¡®±·±õ³Ò³Û³Û³§°¿µþ¡¯. It just couldn't be taken seriously by me and it felt so odd that I couldn't but dislike this. Also, the way each method got introduced and explained was a bit odd too. The so called 'games' was a wrong wording in my opinion. The 'games' can be games, but isn't excluded to be just games. As one needs to do it intentionally for it to be called a game and since many people talk bad about themselves it's not really a game but more of a wrong mindset and wrong response to certain feelings of oneself. In general, I would have phrased many things differently as the way it got phrased sometimes gave me the feeling like they were wrongly interpreted from the author who wrote this. Lastly, I think it's wrong to say that one ¡®chooses¡¯ how to feel. Yes, we all can develop if wanted emotional control, but that still doesn't mean that you can ¡®choose¡¯ how you feel. Feelings or rather emotions are the result of chemical reactions to the brain. You can not ¡®choose¡¯ how you want to feel in the moment therefore as it's a chemical reaction that can't be stopped just controlled to not have an emotional outburst for example. (+ Why did the therapist say that children can't think logical. That makes no sense. Without being able to think logical it wouldn't make sense to send them to Kindergarten to learn things since they are ¡®just emotionally thinking and can't turn on their brain to think logically¡¯. Yes, children are quite emotional but that doesn't mean that they can't learn, otherwise their brain wouldn't develop and they wouldn't be able to speak or walk.) ...more |

The Giving Tree can be interpreted in many ways, I'm sure of this and I made up my own interpretation of this short story. It looks like the story wants to tell how ungrateful and greedy one can be and that by greed you destroy your own happiness. At first the boy was happy for having just a tree and he didn't destroy the tree for his own greed or pleasure as he felt happy by just having the apples on the tree and sticks to climb up on. When the boy grew older he had many things to worry in life, like many people also still do, which made him use the tree for his own happiness in a way that harmed the tree. The tree said it was happy to help the boy, but I'm sure the tree was sad inside that it was used and not being seen as important anymore as it used to be. The boy grew up and didn't see the grace in the tree anymore ¡ª it's beauty. If he would have, he wouldn't have destroyed the tree that he grew up with. Except all the lessons this book can give I do see negative aspects of it as well, as one can learn that it's good to use someone for one's own benefits as they are feeling ¡®happy¡¯ about it. I would have preferred if the tree would have said that they were sad instead of making it seem like it was completely right of the boy to do such bad and harmful things to the tree. ...more |

*I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.* This book was NOT how I expected it to be. More astonishing it *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.* This book was NOT how I expected it to be. More astonishing it is that the most aspects I didn't think to appear in this book happened near the end of the story. It's a mix of good and bad things, but most are rather good. First of all, this book reminded me a lot about Harry Potter ¡ª which isn't a bad thing since I like Harry Potter and it isn't just a copy of it. The whole idea that magic can only be refilled by either pleasure or pain and nothing else is a quite unique story idea, especially as one needs to choose between quantity (pleasure) and quality (pain). Thereof it shouldn't be a surprise that this book is featuring lots of painful scenes, which are usually torture. But it also shows happy moments ¡ª moments of hope. 'Cause of this wheel between pain and pleasure, I can confidently say that the characters, at least the two main characters, aren't one-dimensional as the reader gets plenty of opportunities to understand each of them better. One can connect and maybe even relate to some moments perfectly with the characters as not all pain and pleasure scenes are on the extreme but an in-between. Secondly, the pacing wasn't feeling off and I felt like at least every third chapter or even more often, depending on which part of the story one where, there was something exciting to read about. It never really felt boring or like the pacing just wasn't right. As well as the story being divided into 5 parts, made the reader understand quite well where they were and I believe it's also a good tool for the author to not mess up the pacing. I love the undercover situation the main character is in for the whole story! It just feels so exciting to read about and gives the story a tense mood and a dangerous environment which never made me left boring. As mentioned in other reviews already I'm usually not a fan of enemy to lovers trope unless it's executed well and fits the storyline. At first I was skeptical about it ¡ª My first thought was that it was once more used solely for the purpose of it being popular amongst readers nowadays. It took me till the end reveal to realise how impactful this trope truly is for this story. The real reason for their hate turning into love. More precisely, why they feel such hate towards eachother and that it's more than just on a surface level, which is the reason why most books fail me with this trope. I'm so glad that despite the main character making stupid decisions sometimes that she is aware of it and tries to change it without losing control by panicking or in general being annoying towards the reader and being labelled as many other main characters in books or films as stupid. She knows how to fix it and even though I sometimes had the feeling that she lost focus of her goal, 'cause of her love towards another main character (which was, to be honest, once or twice annoying near the end) she still tried to fix it somehow. The only thing that really bothered me that she was a bit too self-reproachful and sometimes even self-loathing. I do understand where she was coming from and that she had to do horrible things to stay undercover, but sometimes I felt like she was blaming herself for things she wasn't at fault at all ¡ª things that were out of her control. It was even revealed later on that some of the things she blamed herself for where the fault of someone completely else. The only positive thing I got out of her inner conflict is seeing how she developed throughout the story. At 38% in, the reader hears for the first time the nickname the lover gives our main girl and as any romantic book, readers like to rate how cute/fitting it is and I would say it is 9/10 as it had multiple meanings throughout the story which makes her nickname quite unique. (The reason for reducing 1 star and not giving it 10/10 can not be mentioned here as it would be a spoiler, before anyone asks). I also like in this book that the two leads are connected by the same fate and interest, but with a greater reason than just making it cute/romantic as it actually has a great impact on the story on the end. + I prefer if it's not the typical ¡®opposites attracts¡¯ thing but more of a ¡®similarities attract¡¯ as you can't be attracted to someone that is too much the opposite of you, that just doesn't work, there has to be at least one thing to be able to have a conversation of interest and in general not having to fight all the time 'cause they believe in different things, etc. The only case when opposite attracts is when the opposites can eliminate a flaw, when the opposites make a whole. For instance, one is reluctant but the other one is hot-heated. The reluctant one who thinks before acting can make the hot-heated person stop before they do something they regret. The hot-heated could help the reluctant person to do something they might be afraid to do as the hot-heated one might have experience of what will happen and can reassure the reluctant to just do it as nothing bad will happen. Nowadays it happens more often in fiction that people write about opposites attract in a way that would never work in real life and can potentially be harmful to the reader who perhaps actually believes that this could work out in real life. I'm not sure if it's a me problem, as I seem to find out about plot twist fast before they are revealed quite often, but the foreshadowing in this book make me guess correctly quite fast what is about to happen. I don't really see it as something bad that it wasn't (for me at least) hard to know/guess the plot twist as it didn't impact my enjoyment of reading this book. I liked that if you didn't catch the hint immediately that the reader only got the next opportunity to find out about it way later, so it's not like hints are dropped every few pages and makes it overly obvious or something. When I started reading the epilogue, I was thinking that it kinda ruins the fun for the next book of the series, but then I thought that this is actually perfect to make the readers excited and stay for the next book. This was the only plot twist I didn't expect and that made the ending of the book even better. (+ not all questions were answered yet, which makes the readers of this book more intrigued in reading the next one to hopefully getting the questions answered) I hated the fact that there was sexual intercourse. In general, I don't like such things as it makes me uncomfortable. Fortunately, it was only described once in detail, as it revealed something important, though it could have also be revealed without the sexual intercourse, which makes me question if it was necessary to include in the story. Despite all the question answered why a certain character possesses so many magic fields it still feels wrong and overpowered. The reason is just too weak as the same could be said to any other character, as just 'cause you felt more pain than someone else doesn't immediately makes you able to know how to use all the magic that exists in the story (except timeweaving). Pain only improves the quality, but the ability to have more magical fields needs great learning skills and the determination to never give up and it feels weird that from all the characters that try to have more magic fields that this one specific one just has all of them, especially as this character can even overpower the main character which is going a bit too far for me personally. Despite this aspect of the story, everything else that got answered so far had a good explanation that was understandable and made sense. Overall, I will give this 3 out of 5 stars. I reduced 2 to me feeling uncomfortable in some romantic scenes and for the aspect of a character being overpowered. As well as Saffron swimming sometimes in self-loath, which was annoying to watch a couple of times. Lastly, even though it is supposed to be an adult fantasy it read like young adult fantasy as the characters never really acted like they were really adults themselves, it's not like they are overly childish or something but they didn't seem to be acting like adults would either. Nevertheless, I do see potential in this story and be interested in reading the next installment of the series when it comes out. M?rz 25 298 Seiten gelesen: 15. (hide spoiler)] ...more |

As a mlb fan I was surprised to see that a chibi book was made from this series. Many mlb fans always wanted to have a book version of this great show, myself included. A chibi version definitely fits the usual mood for the series (at least for the first two seasons). The series might mature with its audience, but I like that the children touch of it comes back with this chibi art style in a book. The art style is very cute and I enjoyed the small little stories. My favourite story is the last one. The fourth story was the longest and included a bit more stuff related to the actual show. Due to it having a greater connection than the other stories to the original source and having more length I found myself enjoying it the most. The other stories were definitely great and funny in their own way, but I prefer it when the stories (at least some) include more mlb related things, for instance, Ladybug and Cat Noir saving people and being in general on missions. The shorter stories aren't bad, I enjoyed them, but I think that either the volumes should have either more chapters/stories or longer ones, 'cause I think it's a bit too short when it has less than 100 pages. Since it's the first volume I think it's fine, but future volumes should be a bit longer to offer the reader a bit more. Emilia Galotti is something that feels like a fever dream. I understand that Emilia stands for the immaturity and Appiani was standing for the maturity. Emilia Galotti is something that feels like a fever dream. I understand that Emilia stands for the immaturity and Appiani was standing for the maturity. Characters like the Prince or Odoardo was a middle field, though I think that sometimes the Prince was just as immature as Emilia since he didn't make an important choice himself, but asked Marinelli to do it. The Prince also appealed to be quite selfish for only having eyes on Emilia and not caring about anyone else. Odoardo was near the end more honest than I would expect and he accepted his wrongdoings. I liked about this book that I was able to tell what makes it a work of enlightenment and not something else and that it was a sad story. The sad aspect of the story, made the age of enlightenment be seen as something more serious (if not beforehand seen as such) and in general gives a feeling of how much immaturity one can actually affect. The play obviously is a bit exaggerated, but it gives a good idea of how bad immaturity actually is. I disliked how I barely saw any reason to write something like this except that it was made for the age of enlightenment. I understand that books made for the theatre (play) are usually short, but I dislike how rushed everything felt 'cause of it. I also read a different play that was about 100 pages (if not even more) longer and I think the pacing wasn't that rushed as it was for Emilia Galotti. Yes, everything important was mentioned, but it just felt like I was in this story for just split second. The whole play had a time of just two or three days and it felt so strange. Big Spoiler: I hated the honour killing. I did like that it was dramatic and sad at the end 'cause after all the protagonist died, but I disliked the overall message this book gave the reader at the end. Honour killing (in this case) shouldn't be seen as something that needs to be done to save the honour of the family. Emilia was immature and didn't know how to talk back or in general have an own mind. It's wrong to end her life just to regain the honour of the family. Even though Emilia was mature in the middle part of the book, she seemed to be immature of thinking that she needs to end her life to regain honour in her family. What she did was out of her control. In the old ages, you were supposed to listen to people above your rank and she was young and immature. After she realised all this, it was disappointing to see how she didn't live with her newly gained enlightenment but end it all. ...more |

Was meinte Lupin mit zwei?

Was hei?t hier zu fr¨¹h? ...more |

Imagine this: You are The cover looks cute ¡ª showing Sakayanagi and Ayanokouji as younger children, but this book was more sad than the other volumes. Imagine this: You are since your birth in a facility which teaches you from a very young age many things, judo, tea ceremony, playing piano, etc and each year the curriculum gets more difficult and the drop-out rate is increasing. You were never praised for your efforts but only receives punishments (physically) if you did something wrong. You never learnt how to use or show emotions and deem them to be unnecessary therefore. This is the white room from the perspective of Ayanokouji ¡ª the protagonist of this book series. It's truly heartbreaking to see his past and realise how much he went through. Since no one showed emotions to him and gave him punishment if he showed strong emotions he never learnt to actually use them and became emotionless since he was only two years old. I don't want to give too much away since this would be a spoiler for everyone who wants to read this book, but if you want to understand Ayanokouji better, this prequel is the right choice. (+ you will be able to see Sakayanagi as well, though unfortunately her dialogue is the same as in the later volumes shown) The only thing I disliked while reading which made the reading experience even a bit boring was that this volume was heavy on politics. I don't have any interest in politics so that was boring for me to read but at least I know more now about Ayanokouji's father and how the white room got created. Also, now that I saw the past version of Sakayanagi's father I'm fully convinced now that he is truly a good person ¡ª Sakayanagi should be proud to have such a great father who actually cares for children. ...more |

The first year is since the last volume coming to an end, but with this extra volume we get some more moments before the school semester ends. I'm personally very excited to read about the year 2 book series as the anime wasn't able to adopt them yet so this would be a new experience for me now too. Some scenes in this volume were (as far as I remember) not adapted into the anime, so it felt very odd reading them and slowly realising that I experience them for the first time. Though it's an extra volume I saw myself drawn to the whole Tsukishiro incident that continued in this volume. Sakayanagi was also seen for a certain chapter so I definitely feel satisfied with ending this book like this. Another thing I liked to see once more which was confirmed now finally is that Horikita did indeed have a great character development and that from this volume forward she will be able to show her true abilities and potential now that she has stopped chasing after her brother. The ending of this volume was definitely in the anime since it was something major and contributing to the plot and I still remember, since the anime version didn't have any room to actually understand how Ayanokouji thinks, made me think that this ending was real. Gladly, I know better now and his true intentions and motives behind his actions and feel relieved to have my mind at ease knowing what he will do next. I'm glad that I chose to read the light novel and I can now say with certainty that the light novel is much better than the anime. The anime needs to improve more and shouldn't rush that much. To be honest, the anime might even have longer episodes or even a longer season to have everything from the light novel covered without having to make three or even more season for one single school year of Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School. The light novel is definitely better, not only does it make you understand Ayanokouji more and also see him in a different light since the anime failed to show his true personality but you also read about stuff that the anime wasn't covering. If you watched the anime and think of starting the light novel: Read it, it's the best decision you can make. ...more |

| ¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª ¡°You¡¯re free to wish for whatever you want. But if you truly desire something, you ¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª ¡°You¡¯re free to wish for whatever you want. But if you truly desire something, you have to keep fighting for it to the bitter end, to push yourself to your limits.¡± I think this quote summarises pretty well the mood and goal for this volume. The new special exam is about team work and also endurance for some students. This volume is more or less a continuation of the last volume, as the author also originally intended to put both volumes into one single book. Hirata is still, after the first supplementary special exam, distanced from his class and people around him. Even though he developed negatively it was interesting to see how one's body and emotional state responds to putting the blame of something that was out of your control to yourself. Since I never experienced this for myself before, but saw others having this issue, I felt just like (view spoiler)[Mei-Yu Wang. She was one of the people who saw Hirata's emotional state and was trying her best to stop him from destroying himself any further. I'm glad that she got mentioned again and wasn't forgotten since I liked her determination to never give up on Hirata no matter how much it changed to the worse. There is definitely a downside to this, which I also agreed with Horikita, but I like the overall idea of an outsider trying to save someone from themselves even if they won't make it easy for the outsider. (hide spoiler)] If I just look at Hirata's personality for this volume, not the overall personality, I would say it was definitely not good and I really disliked how he (view spoiler)[pushed Mei-Yu to the ground (hide spoiler)] and in general how he changed from kind and respectful to (view spoiler)[threatening people if they won't leave him alone and even getting physical aggressive (hide spoiler)]. (view spoiler)[That also made it all feel ironic to his backstory as to why he feels so guilty, as he acted like the school bullies now too. If Hirata wouldn't have apologised later on, I wouldn't have been able to like him anymore, especially if he would have changed AFTER this volume. So it was essential for him to apologise and change back to his old self (though he made a great development by not being able anymore to make himself feel guilty for things that are out of his control). I definitely won't forgive what he did to Karuizawa (threatening to leak her traumatic past) and Mei-Yu (being disrespectful to her and pushing her to the ground) though. (hide spoiler)] Back to Mei-Yu, 'cause she isn't a often spotlighted character, so I want to give her more room by writing about her: She is definitely the kind and a bit shy girl, but I like how determined she is to (view spoiler)[save Hirata from falling deeper into a hole (though I dislike how she is blinded by love). (hide spoiler)] But she is also the type of character you kinda pity a bit 'cause of how much she overdo her kindness. She isn't setting boundaries and is fine with being treated disrespectful as long as she reaches her goals, which I think to be wrong. (view spoiler)[ ¡°¡I don¡¯t want that to happen, no,¡± said Mii-chan, shaking her head as she thought back to Hirata¡¯s rejection from earlier. ¡°I¡¯d hate for that to happen, but¡if hating me makes Hirata-kun feel like he¡¯s not alone anymore, even just a little bit, then that would be a relief. I think¡in that case, I¡¯d be okay with him hating me!¡± she asserted strongly.(hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[But without her Ayanokouji might wouldn't have noticed how severe of an issue Hirata's behaviour was and Hirata wouldn't have been able to come back at all anymore if Ayanokouji realised this too late, so she was a somewhat tool for Ayanokouji too, to find out how low Hirata was at this time. (hide spoiler)] Horikita changed a lot too and I think it's crazy how fast she learnt to (view spoiler)[play chess (hide spoiler)]. She just had one week to learn it and most people need years, even a lifetime, to be able to be a good (view spoiler)[chess player (hide spoiler)]. (view spoiler)[Regarding how Manabu was disappointed of Suzune: I definitely see why he felt that way, as she wasn't able to develop freely, if she was too dependent on her big brother. I'm glad that this changes now, even if it takes time. Just like Manabu I was surprised to hear Ayanokouji promising that Suzune will develop even further, but I think he did so as he knew her potential before even Manabu had to say it to him. Now I understand the people who say that Suzune would be the final enemy of this (book) series as she has a hidden potential that can only be activated of her by developing more and more and maybe she really is going to go against Ayanokouji since they follow different goals that are working against eachother. (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ ¡°If Suzune can stop chasing after this illusion she has of me, break her dependence on me, and confront herself honestly, then¡¡±(hide spoiler)] And finally I want to speak about the last round of this volume's special exam. (Unless you already read this volume and being interested in a more analytical point of view, you shouldn't read any further and be finished with my review) (view spoiler)[Ayanokouji and Sakayanagi played against eachother, just like planned 'cause they were having a deal. The final round was chess and even though both weren't the players they were the commanders and played after like 10 minutes just against one another and the players just placed the pieces like the commanders told them to. Maybe it's 'cause I have a general fascination with chess but their game was so intense and really exciting to watch. In fact, the longest reading time I had was on this whole chapter just 'cause I re-read most parts again just to be sure I read them correct. I didn't forget the chess scene since I watched the anime, but it felt so different than the anime. The anime rushed everything (not just the chess scene) to be able to have all 11 volumes be completed after 3 anime seasons. This made all scenes therefore more interesting and full of emotions in the light novel, but this chess scene and the aftermath of it was so cool! (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ As soon as I started playing, I was forced to understand something that made me gasp.(hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[Not only was the chess match in general awesome, but also the interactions between Ayanokouji and Sakayanagi. Since I like Sakayanagi a lot I was glad that she got more appearances this time! She is definitely in some kinda way obsessed with Ayanokouji as she just started playing chess at a young age 'cause of him. (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ A young boy was playing chess, overwhelming his opponents one after another. Of all of the children I could see through the glass, he was the only one who captured both my gaze and my heart.(hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ ¡°By the way, Father. I was thinking of learning how to play chess¡¡±(hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[The whole interaction between these two characters is just so interesting. I definitely don't see Sakayanagi in being able (or even wanting) to be a couple with Ayanokouji. It could be possible that her obsession with him is due to her loving him, but I think that it's probably more of a power move of her. She sees Ayanokouji as someone that might threaten her position as a leader. Sakayanagi also belives that a genius is born, not made. Her way of choosing specially chess to demonstrate this is a way of her revealing when she first saw Ayanokouji in the white room to him. (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ ¡°More importantly, though, I can¡¯t imagine that it¡¯s possible to artificially create geniuses.¡±(hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[I don't even know how to describe it but I always feel so excited to see Sakayanagi 'cause she is one of my favourite female characters in this story. Also, her interactions with Ayanokouji always felt so tense but also not at the same time. It's just like Sakayanagi said: It feels like being childhood friends. They definitely have a competition going on and something else tense I can't put my finger on, but they also have more lighthearted moments too which is crazy considering that they are actually NOT childhood friends. (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[Not only had Sakayanagi seen through me, but she was going so far as to help me out. Our little back and forth was bound to have conveyed the overwhelming gap in power between us to the teachers. Now that we¡¯d worked together to fool the two teachers, I supposed, the special exam could begin. (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[The craziest part between their relationship is something most media usually don't have as many don't know the difference between kindness and being respectful, or rather that you can be kind but not respectful and viceversa. They are both respectful to eachother, by asking if the other one is feeling alright. For example, when Ayanokouji saw Sakayanagi fall down after Yamauchi didn't look who was in front of him and asking her if she is alright or when he tried to hold onto her when she was about to fall 'cause Tsukishiro kicked her cane away. Another great example is one that happened in this volume: (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ ¡°[..]if you carelessly competed against me one-on-one, it would undoubtedly cause the people around you to grow suspicious. I wanted to avoid that. Though the acting director took advantage of it all, in the end¡¡±(hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[They might interact with eachother respectful and maybe a bit kind sometimes (since they both asked for eachothers wellbeing in the past) but they don't just play out of fun chess but for Sakayanagi to prove something (+ having alone time with Ayanokouji since she always wanted to meet him once more) and for Ayanokouji to keep his secret a secret. Sakayanagi made a deal with Ayanokouji where if he loses the chess match she will reveal his true potential to the whole school, which you can't really call kind, right? But she is a fair person who also offered to quit school if he wins. (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[Sakayanagi has in general a rather aggressive approach to deal with her stuff, so that makes me think that even if she is kind sometimes her true intentions can be something else, especially as she is good in guilt-tripping others. She is definitely not the best person one can be and she isn't that kind than some other characters, but nevertheless I like her a lot and think it's interesting to see how she plans her next move. I also like how she never reveals her true plan to anyone and leaves them in the dark. This can obviously be a mistake, but trusting someone that could betray you can be a mistake too. Her approach to solve conflicts is one that shows great power as she prefers to not relay on others but on herself, which always worked (so far). (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[I can also understand why most people think Sakayanagi is in love with Ayanokouji 'cause of her way of speaking and interacting with him sometimes, but I don't see her as a girl who gets led by emotions but through logical thinking, so that might just be a tactic of her of manipulating him. But it could also possibly be that she just tries to be kind and it comes across as something more romantically for the reader, even if it's not the case. Nevertheless, I rather see her obsessing over Ayanokouji or in general being interested by his true potential than actually being in love with him. (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ ¡°Earlier, when I talked about the reason why I avoided a one-on-one match with you, I lied.¡±(hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[She did this to tell him that a warmth of another person is important ¡ª implying that she is aware that he never had loving parents or in general someone who showed love and affection to him. By no means she meant to have a close moment with him but rather something important to say which she seemed to hold in since she first saw Ayanokouji in the white room. (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ ¡°People can come to know warmth by touch. And that is precious. The warmth of another¡¯s skin is by no means a bad thing. Please remember that.¡±(hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[I just feel so overwhelmed by their relationship to eachother as it feels so real, more than any other media I ever consumed. Their consideration to one another and respectful exchanges is something I feel blessed to read about. (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ ¡°I¡¯m sorry, I¡¯m quite a slow walker.¡±(hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[Finally, I want to mention the very ending of this volume. I can't recall that the anime had this one covered and this is quite disappointing, if I recall correctly, as this was the first time I goosebumps reading this light novel series. It was when Sakayanagi and Ayanokouji decided to play out their chess match once more since the end result of the special exam got manipulated. When they entered the library I immediately felt calm and like the tension before is completely washed away. I also experienced anemoia (feeling nostalgic of something you never experienced yourself) and also xeno (small human interactions which contains powerful emotions and feelings: in this case towards me). Later on when they both walked back to the dorms I also felt kenopsia (the eerie and maybe calm feeling you get when being at a place that is usually full with people but is so empty for this moment). (hide spoiler)] (view spoiler)[ ¡°I¡¯ve been dying to get to know you. I feel like you¡¯re a childhood friend whom I¡¯ve been chasing for the longest time but haven¡¯t had the chance to actually meet. If we can compete against one another so easily, then I feel like the value of doing so will be diminished,¡± she replied.(hide spoiler)] ...more |

This volume was full of tense emotions, not knowing who is keeping their word and who is going to betray them. The first supplementary special exam is way more heartbreaking and cruel than I initially thought (the anime made it more look like a big school drama than a class and friends trying to keep eachother from expulsion). Three characters showed a new side of themselves, but only one surprised me. Sakayanagi was one of them and I liked her interactions this time with Ayanokouji. I know that they are enemies and there is an invincible wall between them, but for whatever reason I was so happy to see how Ayanokouji is showing once more his true feelings and that he is also considerate towards his enemies. Hirata was so kind and every time he tried to find a solution for this supplementary special exam was so depressing to read about, especially as I was this time able to see his inner monologue and since I knew what was about to happen it felt even worse to read all of this. I like how mature Hirata actually is, as he might only appear to be mature since he is the class representative, but he actually shows it this time as he takes full responsibility for his own actions. After Manabu confronted Suzune I once more realised how much Suzune actually developed in this short time span of 1 year. Even though Ayanokouji is humble and would say he didn't do anything for Suzune to develop into a better version of herself, I'm certain that 'cause he was the one who helped her out in difficult situations that she got the room of improvement. She certainly developed on her own too, but I think without Ayanokouji she wouldn't have started as she needed a little push to even realise her flaws. Even though this exam was even more tense than the others as it required you to betray eachother, there were still plenty of moments (mainly to Ayanokouji) that were wholesome and showed support of one another. I think due to Ayanokouji being a good manipulator he manages to get a new 'friend' even if they just had a slight exchange. But I can see that even though he says he uses everyone as his pawn, he still cares for some of his friendships. I think writing about a characters development is quite hard so I can't imagine to give a lot of characters one, but Syougo Kinugasa seems to be able to do it and since I see no logic gaps I can't but praise this writing style. I already noticed before that many writers do the mistake of giving each character a stereotypical personality which thereof lacks depth, while reading this book series I realise even more now that quite a lot of people do this mistake. Slight spoiler (just the section below) In case you watched the anime: You probably remember how Ayanokouji tried to reach out for Sakayanagi after the new acting director (Tsukishiro) pushed her cane of her hand, making her fall, right? In the anime Ayanokouji WASN'T able to reach Sakayanagi as the new acting director pulled his outreached hand away from her. However in the light novel Ayanokouji WAS able to reach Sakayanagi, holding her for a second before the new acting director attacked Ayanokouji, making him unable to keep his hold of Sakayanagi, thus making her fall. As Sakayanagi gave him that polite advice, Tsukishiro, still smiling, kicked her cane out of her hands. The unexpected action naturally left Sakayanagi unable to react, and she started to fall. Sakayanagi even thanked Ayanokouji for trying to hold her, but the anime probably cut it out since the anime didn't even show him holding Sakayanagi even for a second. That's (for me) a huge disappointment as this small scene was (for me) quite important, especially to display that Ayanokouji can show emotions (which the anime failed to show). ...more |

I think it's cool how each volume is a bit different based on the atmosphere/mood. Last volume was rather tense, but this one now is more on the emotional side. But the extra volumes like 4.5 or 7.5 are usually lighthearted and funny. It surely isn't easy to bring up every mood for a book series, especially one that doesn't fit the standard mood of the series (here: tense and mysterious). I like how much variety the series has despite the environment never changing: All characters are in a elite school and aren't allowed to leave the school grounds. I just noticed now that even though the place never changes the characters and the events still change and progress over time. It's just like how Ayanokouji despite being in the white room all his lives still develops differently than he was thought to at the start when he was in this place and decided to leave it. The place isn't changing you, but everything else. The people change you, time changes you, but not the place. Anyway, let's start with the review. Not having much to say since this volume was rather short and it had only one major event happening. Rumours aren't really my thing and I found myself to grew rather annoyed by them, so seeing that this volume featured school rumours felt for me a bit too clich¨¦. Of course it's a highschool so that rumours spread should be normal, but this isn't a normal school so that put me kinda off (also in the anime). Though I liked how a character was developing through this and became strong by it. Also, some characters that used to be shown a lot in previous volumes aren't that much in the spotlight anymore like they used to be since the last volume and even though it's kinda sad, I'm excited and curious to meet new characters and see a different side of the ones we already met throughout the story. I'm kinda disappointed that I disagree this time with Sakayanagi-san (about her statement regarding criminals), but I like how she is more of an aggressive type as this is contradicting her physical state and gives her character a bit (more) of extraordinary attributes. I think it fits her character more as it wouldn't make her character strong if she is physically weak and also mentally. Of course aggression doesn't have to mean that one is strong mentally but this shows that she doesn't fear away and doesn't make herself smaller than she is, which would be disappointing since people already see her as this due to her physical restriction. She is smart and knows how and when to play her cards, making her not just to appear strong but also be strong as she doesn't react negatively when she losses and is ready to loose to gain something later. While reading I noticed that it is a bit about social norms and about the question what is right and wrong. I definitely saw the fault in the character and definitely agree that one needs to be punished to be made clear of bad behaviour, but I don't believe that one needs to be punished the entire life for one thing a person did wrong. Of course it depends how severe it was, but for this case I honestly believe that it wouldn't be fair to punish this character once more, I believe that this character learnt its lessons. But it was definitely interesting to see how other characters reacted to this, as it also told me more about their personality. ¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª This volume's time was also in February, especially the Valentine's Day, which is funny as it's almost Valentine's Day in real life too. ...more |

You¡¯re free to express your individuality, of course, but you must take other people¡¯s feelings into consideration as you venture out into the world. Short summary of the review Due to a new enemy being introduced in this volume it might it immediately appealing and interesting to see how things turn out. A new perspective is being shown than in previous volumes > Ayanokouji barely interacts with the girls but more with the boys. Due to the terms and rules of the new special exam, this volume felts way more tense than some previous ones. This tension was also shown to influence some characters, making it hard to know till the end who was expelled and who wasn't. This new special exam allowed room for intimacy which was also shown, making this volume having an aspect which is seldom shown due to Ayanokouji's usual demeanour. Ayanokouji was also honest to himself in this volume and showed consideration towards his classmates. Since the special exam required big groups it was sometimes hard to distinguish each character. The Review This is the first time while reading the first year volumes where I absolutely can't remember anything from it in the anime I watched. I watched the anime before reading the light novels and I honestly can't remember this whole 'chapter' of the story, which is astonishing as I liked this volume a bit more than the previous ones. To be real honest, I like when a new enemy appears for the protagonist, makes things a bit more exciting so of course this volume where Negumo was featured was more interesting than the last one which was the end of the last enemy (also the principle the last enemy worked with was kinda ridiculous). This time the enemy is way more cold-hearted and quite cruel. I prefer such a type of enemy, especially for Ayanokouji-kun who has people he wants to protect. I can already see that Ayanokouji's and Negumo's conflict will be way more exciting to see than the previous one. But I'm glad that this is the order of the enemies as it would otherwise be disappointing. I hope this author continues to make the story more and more exciting the further it goes, as I myself prefer stories who have a weak start but finish strong. I even ironically liked how the girls weren't a big part (almost no part actually) for this volume. Since Ayanokouji seems to have more female than male friends I found it interesting to see more of his male friendships and perhaps also new ones forming. This whole volume just gave a different perspective to the story than I usually experienced and I like that it was a bit different this time and not always the same. So far, this volume had regarding perspectives the greatest variety. This volume was also more tense than some other volumes and I really thought even near the end of the volume that some character I liked will get expelled. Since I can't remember this part of the story anymore (or maybe the anime didn't include it for whatever reason) I felt tense again like the first time, but I have the feeling that the light novel did it better than the anime once more. The characters also felt very tense and the responsibility for own actions which also influenced the whole group made it even worse. My favourite parts where one can see that Ayanokouji has feelings even if it doesn't look like it on the surface is when he is asking Sakayanagi if she is alright. I mean, I get it that they are enemies and he might even do it to use her as a tool, but another scene, which didn't happen yet so I don't spoiler, showed that he actually cares for her wellbeing. Sakayanagi is physically weaker than the average person and one can see that even though students seem to show respect towards her many actually secretly look down on her 'cause they see her as weak. A weak body doesn't mean a weak mindset and that's exactly why I like Sakayanagi so much. First impression of her is that she is weak, unimportant and just nothing special but she is so much more and I really like her for that. She isn't the perfect character and even with her disability she is still so strong. Anyway, my main point here, which I realise even better now after reading the light novels is that Ayanokouji might use people as tools but that doesn't mean that he can't feel anything specially towards others. Even if it's just a small gesture he sometimes does, it shows that he has feelings and is human after all. Ayanokouji-kun isn't the emotional type of protagonist but we still got some intimate scenes in this volume. Though it didn't concern him, I found it interesting to see how people's relationships can develop so fast in a more positive direction by intimacy, especially by one that is linked to achieving the same goal. I always thought people get more intimate/honest when they are sleepy, which is still true, but I didn't know that it also works for talking in the dark. I do understand why now, as it gives you some kind of freedom of expressing your thoughts and emotions without feeling the eyes of the person you speak to, after all it's dark. It fascinates me so much 'cause I experienced in my life the same and always wondered why the person was so honest when they weren't sleepy enough to just sleep instead of talking to me, now I understand why. Lastly for my positive aspects for this volume is that Ayanokouji showed lots more feelings compared to previous volumes. He didn't change his personality or anything no, but he showed more consideration towards his peers. For instance, he had the idea in his head to protect everyone from his class and only discarded this thought as it wouldn't work for the special test, but concluded to protect a few anyway. Of course he needs to protect them from being expelled from school if he wants to continue using them for his own advantages, but since he favoured the people he had already formed some kind of relationship with, shows that he might actually cares for them. There were some other smaller moments in this volume, but for me was this one the most important one. Even though, as I mentioned in my last review, I like how I can distinguish every character as they each have their own unique personality and also get introduced slowly and not too fast, I found myself for this volume a bit puzzled who was who again. That's probably 'cause of the type of special exam, which required lots of students to form a group, but there were quite a lot we didn't know beforehand and I had some struggle finding out if they are relevant now and if I need to remember them or not. ¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª This might be totally irrelevant, but the meditative discipline called Zazen was way more difficult than I imagined. As I was curious what the characters did their on their special test, I tried to do it myself and it was way harder than I initially thought. I fortunately didn't try to stay in this posture long as I read shortly afterwards that Keisei got numb legs from it. That's some crazy mediation discipline! ...more |

I think it's funny that so far all the extra books are mainly about romance. Do Japanese people really care that much to have a date on holidays? Anyway, except that I was a bit more satisfied with this extra book, even more than the first one. It seems (for me at least) that the quality and relevance to the main story advances each time another extra book comes out. This one was the best so far, especially since it ended by pointing to a new issue that Ayanokouji will experience for the third semester. Also, I like how we get to know more and more characters but it doesn't get cluttered, as we get to know each one individually and in a pace that doesn't make it overwhelming (+ the coloured pictures at the start of each book help to get an idea on how each character looks like). My favourite aspect for this short extra book was definitely about the new student council president, namely Nagumo Miyabi. I'm looking forward to him and his fight against Ayanokoji. + I liked how Sakayanagi was featured too, might have been short but I'm interested in what this girl has to offer in the future. ...more |

I liked it, but why was it shorter this time? Kinda sad, considering that the special test wasn't that major like it usually is. But it's probably a me thing as I prefer to see action (especially fighting scenes) animated and not described. Though Ayanokouji looked really cool in this one drawn picture. This volume was a cat and mouse game. Something I definitely like, but it ended too soon and Ayanokouji-kun's enemy was weaker than I thought which was a letdown. With weaker I don't mean the physical strength but rather the weak mindset. It's ironic as this character said that their mindset wasn't weak, but in the end it was. I still don't really like Karuizawa, but she seems to be pictured better in the light novel than in the anime (or I just have it bad in memory). What I definitely liked was how I could read about not just her external but also internal conflict and her thoughts which were never displayed on the anime. Therefore she seems mentally stronger to me now and I respect that more than in the anime where she seemed like a weak parasite. ...more |

...more |

¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª ...more |
