I understand one's issues with the plot and some of the decisions made by the characters but it was never really hate-worthy to me. I watched the movies as they came out when I was younger and loved them, mostly for the Cullen vs Wolves stuff. Alice is still a cool character imo. Bella is an everywoman, but plenty of stories everyone loves suffer from that: take Star Wars and Harry Potter. ...more

I swear he conspired with my sixth-grade humanities teacher to get me to read as many of his kids' books as possible. Nevermind the fact that I was reading beyond high school at that point, no, I needed to read James Patterson. This book is so bad and I take the recommendation as a personal offense.
Daniel X is an annoying Gary Stu with a barf-worthy romantic plotline that ends up being [surprise! A plot twist!] which was dumb. He fights aliens, but I don't even remember most of what happened directly (don't blame me, it was bland and I tried to purge it from my memory). Please save yourself some time and don't pick this up in the first place....more

I originally gave this book five stars in passing as a book I read for school in seventh grade. Further analysis leads me to the conclusion that this book is a tasteless mess. The writing is unbearable and definitely American. Names like Fuhrer or Auschwitz were replaced with Out-With and Fury, which doesn't make sense when the main character speaks German. Bruno is nine but reads about five. He would be in the Hitler Youth at this point and definitely wouldn't think 'Heil Hitler' is a cheeky way to say goodbye. Nonetheless, his naivete remains a key factor of the book. At age twelve, my teachers were hammering it in that this is a ~sad reality~ story. It was emotional manipulation with the goal of getting my classmates to stop making Hitler jokes, clearly. Bruno and Shmuel [die at the end, both of them forced into a gas chamber.] This was obviously with the intention to make a point about how we're all the same.
Anyway, this book rings insensitive and cash-grabby. Sorry to leave a bad review on a Holocaust book, but this is just wrong....more

The characters were flat. I've seen them before in other ~issue books~ of a similar nature. An older main character, even just by a couple of years, may be better. A little kid's point of view in a book like this, especially one as immature as the protagonist, gets really frustrating. ...more
