The premise was terribly intriguing, but it was also unpredictable. Overall alliances were changing and surprising, it's the first in a series of three, and it wasn't until the end that it was even imaginable what the others could cover, but the end left many opportunities for actually finishing the overall story. The characters were well presented, and changes in individual personalities were relevant to the situations and understandable. But there was a LOT of death, but it was totally consistent with the story and helped illustrate the direness of the situation and serves as an impetus to continue the series....more

They are all standalone books, but they have a running story, and this book fills in some background for the future books. It makes the reader feel more knowledgeable about the characters, and it details how the whole trajectory of the main character's career and paths trajectory comes from. Said trajectory is moving, sad, and undesirable. But it's understandable and noble in some sense. The main character is able and admirable and relatable. Whereas few would have started on her original career path, she's strong, helpful, and smart as a whip. The book covers a whole range of emotions and situations and makes the reader feel 鈥 I wish I could do that! But fortunately, I will never be in that situation...鈥 I currently feel that I need to catch up on the in-between books that I have not yet read. It's a compelling story overall....more

Interesting book series....more

The individual characters were crafted and built so carefully and completely that none of it was implausible. Rosie, as usual, was impeccably correct and fittingly personable and thoughtful and helpful in figuring out the details of the case, although it was really mostly the queen. Great book!...more

It's promoted as 鈥渄ark humor鈥, and the review that I saw said it was hysterical and well written I suppose that if I twisted my feelings enough, I could have seen -some- (dark) humor in it, but mostly I've found the characters stupid and insufferable. Book club book, and our meeting for it is tonight, and maybe I'll get some more input from that, but I really didn't like it. I used an audio book copy which I started out listening to at 1.25 speed (as opposed to my usual 1.5 times speed). After I'd been through about half I tried one and a half speed just to get through it a little faster. For the end, I used two and a half speed- which is usually too fast to absorb ideas, but it was so tedious that I really just wanted to get through it......more

I was in Israel for the year, and my room might on the kibbutz recommended it, but she warned me that I had to avoid spoilers. She was definitely right. Now, 50 years later, I've reread it, and I still think it's worthwhile. It was indicated as a 鈥 horror story鈥, as well as science fiction and historical fiction, but I don't think it's a horror story- although it has horrific ideas! But I won't tell you very much about it come on because it's definitely true that spoilers should be avoided! But its thought provoking and makes the consider how far is too far to go. For me, it was a great revisiting, and for others, it's a worthwhile book....more

The whole situation was interesting and engrossing; the different lives of the characters were as full as they could be in a book whose overall point was not the lives of the characters, but it all fits so well! It was engrossing to see the different sides of individuals. And the fights they all had to continually fight just to maintain sanity and the feeling of completeness. A surprisingly enjoyable book....more
