The mixed feelings displayed for each of the protagonist characters helps to represent the combination of traits that make up even our heroes. This is the ninth in a series of action adventures featuring the main character, who is one of the flawed protagonists. The villains are so clearly villainous that it is easy to accept the negative aspects Of the others as necessary for good to win. I did find the ending less satisfying than I had hoped for But it is the only one of the series that I have read thus far, so I may be missing part of the overall story. But meanwhile It's exciting, captivating, and it kept me involved. I think I need to go back and read the first, although it is clearly not necessary for getting swept up in this one......more

This particular book, although a good and insightful book, was not what I was wanting or expecting. There were basically three or four ongoing streams that related to each other but the way it was presented was confusing and annoying at best. There was not one straight timeline, but four concurrent timelines separately that really did braid back together and depended on each other, but it was not a standard Jack Daniels mystery at all! It did include some fascinating ideas and subplots, and it left open a tantalizing recurring idea. I do look forward to future books come on but I hope the that Mr. Konrath does not continue this confusing format....more

The book made some excellent points, but it seems to do a fair amount of rambling. I chapters 8, 9, and 10, I was really hoping for it to be done. And the epilogue was way too long. Yes, there definitely are good reasons that people are attached to and dependent on delusions, and delusions are both useful and necessary in many cases, and the book describes and justifies them, but again, it seemed to go off on tangents and seemed undirected at times. This was unfortunate, because I truly look forward to and enjoy the author's segments on NPR.

It's extremely repetitive- I kept on saying, “get on with it,... get on with it,... get on with it... Tell me something I haven't read or experienced or witnessed the contemplation of!! The characters are inconsistent and unrealistic. The idea was great!, but the details and execution were really bad. And she tried to combine two totally different stories into one, which in itself isn't necessarily bad, but in this case , each one of them should have been treated separately. Sorry, but I hated the entire experience (oh, and as part of the editing problem, the grammar absolutely stank!) I wanted several times just to stop reading, but somehow I got it through my mind that you should never stop reading something after you actually started it... (stupid, I know...)...more

Unfortunately, the author uses logic with holes big enough that a truck could roll through it, and the ghost didn't play very much of a role, but I still liked it. There are three more books in this series, and I'm hoping that Amazon will include them as a set as it in the Two sets of the previous 6 books (two sets of three) I don't know if I can justify buying the last three individually, particularly when I own a couple of thousand audio books to which I have not yet listened ... At least my addictions and neither terribly expensive nor physically dangerous and harmful......more

There were several different actions that similarly seemed unconnected, and there still didn't seem to me a real point to it. Eventually, it all tied together and made for a surprising and pointed story. The main FBI agents were great, and the relationship between the two Encouraging to each other and to the reader! It was particularly refreshing that the writer did not insist that just because they were opposite sexes, they had to have a room ending involvement! The ending was surprising but satisfying- well , not totally surprising, although the details definitely were :-)...more

I switched to text to speech, and as I was able to follow the story, I realized that had great potential, and in fact I enjoyed it. The author was able to take a revolting idea and make it into a reasonable story and a reasonable sounding solution to particular heinous crimes and situations. The whole thing still makes me feel a little bit dirty, so I can revel in the fact that I personally am not involved!...more

The surprise ending was good, but something had to give, and I was less than happy with the overall feeling of the book. Sigh. And there are many loose ends involving important characters from the beginning! For instance, whatever happened with the twins? They totally dropped out without even a mention :( The first book of the series is superior, but really neither of them is totally engrossing or wonderful....more

There were so many angles and approaches that the reader stayed connected and interested in everything that may be happening. My only complaint Is that the end was somewhat of a let down; there were so many interesting possibilities, that the conclusion Really didn't go into the details on a number of scenarios that had been presented, and I really would have liked to further investigate all of the things that really were going on. But overall, the book answered the proper questions and solved the overall mystery!...more

The premise was unbelievable and ridiculous there is no way that a brand-new employee of the cops would get answer original assignment a murder case with no partner, and no support! The writing was full of colorful similes, which although kind of fun, were obscure and hard to fit in with the actual narrative. The effort to paint Reese as a super intuitive, super smart, unbelievably clever, and ridiculously well suited in ALL possible situations was almost too much. I kept asking myself why I didn't just stop reading, but I felt an obligation to actually finish and post about a book that I really, truly, did not like and thought be rethought and approached in a totally different way...more
