The idea knocked around my head for a few years, until I finally wrote it for him for his 50th birthday. I hope you love reading this as much as I loved writing it.

It is about single mom Adele who travels to a remote island in the Atlantic to participate in an extreme game of hide-and-seek hosted by Maverick Dillan, a daredevil social media star and his company Extreme Games and Insane Challenges. Adele has traveled to Falcao Island, leaving her teenagers alone for the first time, to try to win the million dollar prize. After all, these things are just stunts, right? All for the cameras? There’s no real danger. But as a storm bears down and a very real threat looms, the situation quickly turns from game to race for survival.
One of the big inspirations for this story came when my family and I traveled to the Azores, a chain of islands in the Atlantic. I'll share more later, as we get closer to the release date. ...more

I know it seems like the release date is a long way off, but it will be here before we know it. In the meantime, here are some "behind the scenes" fun facts:
1) The vibe was loosely inspired by Ira Levin’s Rosemary’s Baby.
2) The Murray Hill apartment is based on an actual one, which belonged to my late Aunt Phyllis, and the descriptions are pulled completely from my childhood memory. To this day, her sunny two-bedroom remains the iconic New York City dream dwelling. The building, The Windermere, is fictional.
3) Bestselling author, New York Times Book Review critic, and friend Sarah Weinman gave me lots of insight into how true crime writers do their research. Sarah’s searing and important article in The Cut (June 3, 2019. Before, and After, the Jogger Survivors of the real ‘Central Park Five� attacker speak for the first time) was the inspiration for my character Rosie’s fictional first true crime book.
4) There are a number of other little pieces from my life that found their way onto the page.

Every book starts with a germ, a seed that takes hold and starts to grow. For SECLUDED CABIN SLEEPS SIX, it was a couple of different things that I read and experienced over the last few years that kind of dovetailed.
I read an article in The New York Times "Modern Love" column about a man who sought out his children decades after he had anonymously donated his sperm, then fell in love with their mother. This really got me thinking about love and family, and what a strange alchemy it all is.
Meanwhile, during the pandemic when we couldn't go anywhere, we wound up renting some lovely but isolated cabins in the woods in Georgia to hike and have a socially distanced vacation. It was idyllic and gorgeous, and of course I couldn't stop myself from thinking about how isolated we were, and did they change the lock code for each guest? And no one would hear us screaming, etc.
Because I can't just relax and enjoy myself like a normal person.
So all of these things clattered around my brain until they collided into SECLUDED CABIN SLEEPS SIX. Buckle up! ...more
