Pros + topic: interesting sex practices and reproductive organs of animals + rep: hetero, lesbian, gay, and bisexual behavior in the animal kingdom
Cons - The writing style was informative but unfortunately dry, which made it entirely forgettable. - As a precaution against the dry writing, the author includes jokes which I found cringey. The jokes personify the animals and are about their sex lives so it just felt weird. - At the end of each animal's section, the author would mention many other animals who have similar/equally bizarre sex lives/organs which I found confusing and a bit overwhelming. Why not just keep each section for 1 animal and create other sections if needed? - Each animal has an accompanying genital illustration. It was unneeded. I really wish it had just been of the animals, maybe during sex. But the zoomed-in dick pics really weren't it.
Pros + excellent parenting theory + main theme: simplification of parenting style/actions/household in order to increase the happiness of child4.5 stars
Pros + excellent parenting theory + main theme: simplification of parenting style/actions/household in order to increase the happiness of children and decrease their stress + chapter topics: why simplify, soul fever, environment, rhythm, schedules, filtering out the adult world, value-centered family leadership, simplicity parenting to go + combines theories from author's own decades of experience, Waldorf, and Montessori parenting schools + Payne makes so many good points, which may seem obvious to some, but not to many. This book is an argument against hyper-schedulization of childhood, of hyper-consumerism, and hyper-awareness of comparing and competing against other parents/children.
Neutral + The chapter about value-centered leadership dipped a bit into religious undertones, which I didn't really like. But, if you're religious then it may be an appreciated addition.
**the highlight of my parenting prep reading so far**
Pros + Janet Lansbury studied under Magda Gerber, the founder of the respectful parenting movement**the highlight of my parenting prep reading so far**
Pros + Janet Lansbury studied under Magda Gerber, the founder of the respectful parenting movement (RIE). + This book is super tightly plotted in just 161 pages. There is absolutely no fluff or extraneous material in here which I GREATLY appreciate. So many parenting books are so long or repetitive. NOT THIS ONE! + This parenting book is for people interested in respectful parenting and positive discipline. + Each chapter covers a certain topic with a few letters/anecdotes from real parents and Lansbury's responses to those situations. + Topics covered include: baby discipline, why toddlers push limits, talking to toddlers, toddler boundaries, cooperation, ditching distractions, the power of no, no timers, staying unruffled/calm, whining, biting/hitting/kicking, throwing food, back-talk, tantrums, setting limits, consequences, respectful parenting, gentle leadership, respectful parenting not passive parenting
Neutral / If you believe in spanking, yelling, or hard discipline, this book is not for you.
Cons - none
TW: mentions of spanking and physical/verbal "discipline" of children...more
Pros + This is a tightly paced and succinct #MeToo memoir about the author's childhood (13-15yo) being groomed by an openly pedophilic author. + FrenchPros + This is a tightly paced and succinct #MeToo memoir about the author's childhood (13-15yo) being groomed by an openly pedophilic author. + French translation + The changing French view of art vs. morality (1980s, 1990s, and onwards to now) was at once grotesquely fascinating and unreservedly appalling. During her childhood, art>morality. Springora's mother knew, her father knew, her friends knew, the public knew, the publishing houses knew, and the freaking police knew. And everyone ignored the pedophile's actions with a "well, what do you expect? he's an artist" type viewpoint. My jaw was on the floor. The pedophile even won a literature award in 2013! He should have been rotting in jail! This book was SHOCKING and really made me think "France WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?" + The entire system around Springora (her parents, friends, school teachers, and even police) let her down over and over again. The rage at them and sadness for her grow steadily over the course of the memoir. How she managed to recover and achieve professional and personal success in life is a testament to her strength alone. + bisexual/pansexual rep (the pedophile, unfortunately)
TW: pedophilia, grooming, parental neglect, father abandonment, anorexia, disassociation, mental breakdown/psychotic break, stay in a hospital, gaslighting, depression, suicidal ideation, pedophilic sex tourism...more
