This was everything I didn't know I needed! Dead Sky Morning by Karina Halle is absolutely gripping and unputdownable! I read it on Canada Day during night shift... And if you know anything about this book, well, I'd say that was perfect timing.
“This is the Island of Death. This is purgatory. This place has a dark soul of its own. And it will drown you in its depths.
Karina Halle brings Dex and Perry to Canada for this episode of Experiment in Terror, to an island off the coast of Vancouver that is haunted by a horrific past. From the preface:
From 1894 to 1924, D'Arcy Island was the site of a (primarily Chinese) leper colony run by the Canadian and British Columbian governments. Over the years, the lepers were left to fend for themselves, save for the supply ships that came in every three months to drop off food, opium and...coffins. On the virtually escape-proof island, at least forty souls lost their lives to Hansen's Disease. Though difficult to access, today it stands as a park as part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. A commemorative plaque plus a few leftover ruins and makeshift graves are the only reminders of the travesties that occurred there.
I'll admit it: this perfectly primed me to be creeped right out. The ghosts of imprisoned, survivalist lepers?! Immediate chills. (Also how horrifying is Canadian history?) This story was wild, intense and so freaking perfect. The end had my heart absolutely racing. It's my favourite in the series so far and a top read of the year!!
Also if you like the only one bed trope.. Have you ever considered ONLY ONE SLEEPING BAG? With a wailing ghost outside the tent?? Yeah. Me neither. Until now....more

There are five star reads, and then there are Keri Lake books. This. Was. Epic!
Grim and enchanting, Anathema is the first book in The Eating Woods Duology: a gothic FANTASY from the brilliant mind of Keri Lake. What was my most anticipated read of the 2024.. is now my favourite.
“Il captris nith reviris. What is taken will never return.
I'm a huge fan of the Brothers Grimm, and this story had me feeling as though I stepped through a portal right into one of those atmospheric and disturbing tales. But more complex and intense... and romantic. This exceptional blend of true darkness and horror with classic elements of fantasy and romance is absolutely intoxicating to me and exactly what I want when I reach for "dark fantasy romance"!
What to expect: - gothic fantasy - horror elements - plot driven - slow burn (for real) - shunned FMC - cursed, tortured MMC - forced proximity - found family - intricate world & magic system - cliffhanger
Keri Lake's writing is always immersive and vivid, but she really flexed her creative mind with this fantastical and disturbing world that has unique languages, lore, bloodlines, creatures and a fascinating magic system... All in the backdrop of a compelling plot with incredible characters and a swoon-worthy slow burn. It honestly leaves me awestruck.
So many scenes gave me actual, hair-raising, CHILLS. There are seriously dark aspects of this book that had my heart pounding and my stomach sinking. The plot itself is enthralling with many moving parts and flawless pacing. I could not get enough!!
“I also know that the delicate black rose doesn’t grow well in these parts. Our winters are far too cold for its fragile roots.
“Where do they grow?
“Where the gods see fit to plant them.
I adore these characters the outcasted, curious Maevyth Bronwick who loves so fiercely and leads with her heart, and the morally grey Zevander Rydainn, ruthless assassin on a rogue quest to rid himself of a dark curse.
Zevander is closed-off and broody with a backstory that makes my heart ache. I could understand his ruthless nature, absolutely, and wanted to see him succeed no matter the cost. There is something so delicious about his disdain for Maevyth (or rather, the way Maevyth makes him feel), and the unique vulnerability required of him in allowing her past his defences.
And his supernatural abilities!? I'm obsessed!! I’m calling it now: shadow daddies are out and fire daddies are in.
“The whims of fate are an irksome intrusion, and yet Who could’ve predicted that one touch of your pounding pulse would be so disarming.
This is the slowest of slow burns but it’s not without unbearable tension, hilarious banter and electric chemistry. These are truly two characters that bring out the best in each other and I can’t wait to see how their relationship evolves in the final book.
I can't finish this review without mentioning the absolutely phenomenal cast of characters. I found myself wanting to know more about each of Zevander's assassin brothers, Rykaia, and Raivox (!!!!!) The villainous characters, as well, I found to be alluring and interesting even when I just wanted to hate them. They all added so much to this incredible story.
I've honestly written and re-written this review countless times but I've decided that I will never get it right. I have SO MANY thoughts about this book, I truly could go on and on. Though this book is 700 pages, I could have easily read 700 more... and I'm absolutely desperate for the conclusion of this story!! Keri Lake is a master of her craft Anathema is everything I hoped it would be and more.
I would recommend this book to any dark romance readers that appreciate intricate fantasy worlds, grimdark and horror elements, complex characters, unique plots, torturous slow burns, broody antiheroes, immersive writing and impactful stories.

Holy Hell!! This book actually broke me into pieces and put me back together, all in a matter of 300ish pages. I'm fully convinced that there is nothing Karina Halle can't write. This is dirty, gritty, unapologetic dark romance. Tread carefully if you have any content sensitivities.
Note: This is the final book in the Dirty Angels Trilogy. Though all of them can be read as standalone, I recommend reading them in order as there is a subtle overarching plot. This trilogy is also connected to Halle's Artist's Trilogy and I definitely recommend starting there as this series will spoil what happens in that one.
Dirty Angels is one of my favourite Karina Halle books, so naturally I was already invested in the continuation of Javier and Luisa's romance, but I honestly had no idea what kind of turmoil I was in for with this book... my heart broke as these characters I love so much quickly slipped toward rock bottom. The author's note refers to this story as the "ruination and redemption" of Javier and Luisa, and it couldn't be more accurate.
Family is everything. That is the creed in this country. But that creed gets others killed. And it slowly kills you. Your family is the first thing you’ll lose. Your soul will be the last.
Knowing that this book (and series) was written with attention to research about Mexican cartels made everything so much heavier as well. It's horrifying and honestly had my stomach in knots for the majority of the book.
But of course, this is still fiction and romance and I knew their final happy-ever-after was on the horizon... but for a hot minute there I had absolutely no idea how they would possibly make it. The ending was SO FREAKING SATISFYING. I can't stop thinking about it.
ANYWAY. This book is dark and disturbing and the characters will challenge you.. Javier is morally black and Luisa... well, she's an angel that got her wings dirty. Even if you've been a Javier fan since Sins & Needles, it might be difficult to justify some of his thoughts and actions in Dirty Promises. Luisa is a victim in many ways, but she's been changed by her trauma. Her heart has become dark and desperate. I became so twisted up in their pain. While I didn't always agree with their actions, I still rooted for them every step of the way.
An anti-hero was still a hero in the end, but I would never be more than a villain.
I love this series just as much as The Artist's Trilogy, which, if you follow me you'll know was a top series of the year. My mind is blown by the interconnected world Karina Halle has created. I am so excited to dive into the Sins Duet!...more
On Every Street is a prequel novella in Karina Halle's Artist's Trilogy. This is the story of Javier and Ellie (aka Eden)'s begKarina f*cking Halle!!!
On Every Street is a prequel novella in Karina Halle's Artist's Trilogy. This is the story of Javier and Ellie (aka Eden)'s beginning. We get a glimpse into how these characters came to be the menacing drug lord and the shameless con artist we met in Sins & Needles.
Note: though it's a prequel in terms of the timeline, this story is meant to be read between books one and two, per the author's recommendation.
"Any love that starts under a lie is bound to kill you."
I could ramble on and on about how much I adore this story. Or how I can't even think about the song "On Every Street" by Dire Straits without getting emotional... let alone listen to it. Or the fact that I do both anyway and drown in my feelings. Or how this series has taken over my waking thoughts ... but I will instead just say, this little book is an incredible, emotional and painful story of first love.
"I want to stain you, Eden. I want myself embedded in your skin, in your heart, in your soul."
Javier Bernal has quickly become one of my most favourite villainous male leads and book boyfriends despite all the red flags. Maybe it helps that I (accidentally) read Dirty Angels first because I know where his story is headed. But damn, the things that come out of this fictional man's mouth... It's criminal. I fell for him alongside Ellie despite knowing full well that this would end in heartbreak.
"What do you wish for?" "Just this."
This story hurt, but it was also purposeful and beautiful and adds so much to the series as a whole. Infinity stars.
PS: I made a playlist for this series and you can listen on Spotify....more

Sins & Needles by Karina Halle is the first book in The Artist's Trilogy: a contemporary romantic suspense series that follows Ellie Watt, a bold and complicated con artist trying to outrun her mistakes. And what a fantastic start to a series this was!!
Please note: this series follows the same characters with an overarching plot and it's meant to be read in publishing order. Per the author, the prequel novella is actually #1.5 and is recommended to be read between books one and two.
At age 26, a con gone wrong leaves Ellie ditching her latest identity in favour of one she hasn't used in years: her real one. She runs back to her hometown of Palm Valley, California, hoping to keep a low profile and maybe even find honest work for a change. Instead, she barrels right into Camden McQueen, the one true friend she had in high school before she turned her back on him... Though he looks a lot different than the outcasted goth she used to know. He's all grown up, tattooed, talented and still seemingly harbouring a crush on Ellie. Old habits die hard when Ellie sees him as the perfect target.
Add into the mix an angry and delicious ex-boyfriend who happens to be a very powerful drug lord in the Mexican cartel (yes, the Javier from Dirty Angels) and you get an incredibly original, captivating and wild ride! So much heart, tons of thrilling action and incredible characters.
Ellie and Camden are both unique and refreshing characters that I could not get enough of! Lately with a lot of the newer and "trendier" books in the dark romance world, I find the characters feel like they are all cut from the same cloth. Not Ellie Watt. Not Camden McQueen. In fact, this book does not feel formulaic in any way. Hallelujah!
“Ellie Watt... I wouldn’t even trust you if you were dead.
Ellie Watt is a liar. A manipulator. A grifter. Growing up with parents that groomed her in the art of scamming others for money, it's safe to say her ethics are a little skewed. And to top it off, she's angry. The past has left scars on her body and mind and she carries the heavy weight of resentment on her shoulders.
"Spite was the fuel to right all your wrongs. And like any fuel, it could consume you."
I think there are probably a lot of readers out there who might take issue with some of Ellie's behaviour, but I think she's flawed and fantastic and shows so much growth by the end of this story!
Camden McQueen is a successful tattoo artist and musician. He's got scars too, but they are buried deep below the sexy surface. He's a tortured soul dressed up in a beautiful package, with a dark side ready to rear its ugly head when provoked. He is hot-as-sin, seriously charming and a little mysterious. But ultimately, he's the perfect man to offer sanctuary and healing for Ellie when she needs it most. Swoon.
“Do you think because you can’t see my scars that they don’t exist? That’s the trouble with pain, Ellie. If you’re lucky, you can wear it for all the world to see. Most people have their pain deep inside, in places no one ever goes.
In so many of Karina Halle's books, I can see her love of music and travel bleeding into the pages and this story is no exception. The setting and scenes were so vivid and beautifully painted, and the use of music references throughout was incredibly impactful. There is no official playlist listed anywhere but I felt obligated to put one together featuring the songs mentioned and a few extras that I felt fit the story.
You can check out my unofficial playlist on Spotify.
"You can find art and beauty in everything, if you look hard enough."
Karina Halle just delivers when it comes to stories, characters and dialogue that can simultaneously entertain me, make me swoon and keep me emotionally invested. I am thoroughly enjoying my journey through her contemporary dark romance series and will forever be beating myself up for waiting over TEN YEARS FROM PUBLICATION to read this.
Definitely recommend this series for readers who already love Karina Halle, or for any romance readers that want something original and refreshing, entertaining, angsty, sexy and even a little sweet. . . . . . . . I knew this would be a stellar book; Trisha Wolfe is one of my favourite writers and her stories never disappoint me. She's also incredibly gifted at writing strong endings. But this?? This was everything and more. I am completely awestruck. This was a feast for my mind, heart and soul. This was the best possible conclusion I could have imagined for my beloved Kallum and Halen.
As unhinged as it is deeply romantic, brilliant and calculated as it is emotionally affective and all-consuming, Lovely Wicked Things is the keystone to the masterpiece that is the Hollow's Row trilogy.
Please note that you absolutely cannot read these books out of order, as they build on one another. You have to start with Lovely Bad Things. This review is intentionally vague to avoid spoiling any part of the series. Potential triggers will be listed at the very bottom.
"The harder we deny our nature, the more painful our existence."
I'm the type of reader that craves intensity and Trisha Wolfe is the kind of writer that drowns me in it. Her ability to write character chemistry and intimacy is unmatched, and in combination with her truly twisted up and thrilling plots, it makes for the sweetest rush. Lovely Wicked Things is no exception.
"Question everything." If you've read the first two books, you know there are many questions that need answers in this conclusion. My mind was seriously blown with how everything came full circle in a way that was thrilling, organic and so damn romantic. The final twist had my jaw dropping with its perfect yet unpredictable execution, and insane emotional impact.
“I’ve felt your pain, so beautifully broken. I’ve seen you at your darkest, and you never looked more exquisite.
Dr. Halen St. James is an incredible female character and her journey is absolutely unforgettable to me. She is so intelligent and capable, yet so lost to her pain. Her character carries this intense tone of melancholy that I could feel deeply before I even understood her history. My heart broke for her, and just like Professor Kallum Locke, I wanted to take her pain from her.
And Kallum? Well, we know how feral I am for this fictional man from my last review but I will try to give the short version: Kallum Locke is the perfect fictional man and the standard to which I now compare all future book boyfriends. I don't think I have ever swooned so hard in my life! In this final book we get answers to questions that surround him and oh my god he truly is perfection. His resolute, unrelenting and unconditional love for Halen takes my breath away and chokes me up! In fact, the way that both of these characters reach for each other and protect each other is so achingly beautiful to me. Their love feels sacred and reflecting on their story makes me incredibly emotional.
"It’s the connection of the twin flame. Once your other half is found, if divided, it will consume and devour everything in its path like the fires of hell to be reunited. It’s the course."
The layers and symbolism throughout all three books are seemingly infinite and I'll be content to spend the rest of my life dissecting the brilliance within these pages. I will never tire of this story and how everything has unfolded; it's one I will revisit over and over.
If you've been on the fence about starting or waiting for the series to be complete, don't wait a moment longer!

I re-read this book in a single day via audiobook to prepare for Lovely Wicked Things, and I loved it just as much as the first time. Trisha's brilliance astounds me and I am so excited to see how she concludes this incredible series!
Original review:Lovely Violent Things by Trisha Wolfe is absolutely insane in the most beautiful, brilliant and calculated way. It is the second instalment of Wolfe’s Hollow’s Row trilogy, because "everything that comes in threes is perfect in its entirety", according to Kallum a brilliant and poetic dark psychological thriller romance steeped in philosophical history and questionings. This series has been my introduction to Wolfe’s writing, and I am so weak for her beautiful words.
“All our lovely bad and beautiful things are derived from violence.
Please note that you absolutely cannot read these books out of order, as they build on one another. You have to start with Lovely Bad Things.
Potential triggers: occult practices, cannibalism, serial murder, violence, gore and body horror, sexual assault, PTSD, grief and loss, explicit sexual content.
Lovely Violent Things begins right where Lovely Bad Things ended, save for a brief flashback from Kallum. We are brought back to the killing fields in Hollow’s Row, with Halen searching for answers to cases unsolved with missing victims lives on the line, and Kallum drawing ever nearer like a moth to a flame. I won’t say much more to avoid spoilers for either book, but what ensues is a gripping and twisted investigation paired with a passionate and all-consuming romance. I could not put this book down!
“There are no beautiful surfaces without a terrible depth.
Kallum Locke professor, philosophy fanatic, the “bad boy of academia had me in a chokehold through this entire book. He brought out the feral sapiosexual in me. His brilliance. His calculated behaviour to move toward his own goals. His unwavering conviction to his own philosophical beliefs. His absolute obsession with his muse and willingness to do whatever it takes to keep her within reach. The way he exercises such patience and restraint around Halen, while also testing her boundaries and pushing her toward her own enlightenment *swoon*. I am obsessed.
“My muse of heartbreak, my sweetest epiphany. If I had an infinite number of lifetimes, it still wouldn’t be enough. She’s all that I want, all that I crave, and I’m desperate to make us last longer than an ephemeral flicker in time.
This is a definite slow burn, but one that leads to total combustion. No one writes romantic chemistry, sexual tension and spice quite like Wolfe. I could feel the crackles in the air between these two characters, their charged connection so palpable, frantic and raw. This book had me questioning if Kallum and Halen are both insane, or if their truly is something more to to these esoteric beliefs and practices. And then I came to realize how little it mattered because whatever exists between them is darkly beautiful and alchemic all the same.
I ended this book with the devastating realization that little would compare to the prose within these pages (save for Wolfe's backlist, perhaps). Desperate for more and not quite ready to let go of Kallum and Halen. It put me into one of the biggest readings slumps I’ve ever had, and for a book of only 300 pages, that is quite the feat.
“There is no greater destruction than one of self. And therefore, no catalyst more powerful to wield in alchemic creation. Destruction isn’t an end it’s a beginning.
In terms of the overarching plot, this book answers some questions and gives rise to others. Wolfe gives us some of the sweetest, loveliest and violent breadcrumbs in this book, very clearly lining the path toward what I can only assume will be an epic conclusion to this trilogy.
This book was 100% worth the wait, in my opinion. Wolfe does not hold back in her writing, and she does not cut corners or water anything down. The amount of research that must have gone into this book for the philosophy elements alone, is insane, not to mention the criminology aspects, and the craft of writing like a poet and plotting like a mastermind. I bow to her, and I will happily devour her backlist while I patiently wait for Lovely Wicked Things. You can’t rush art, and I’ll wait as long as it takes.Â
I am so grateful to have received an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
A small disclaimer: to enjoy this masterpiece, you must be willing to experience many "wtf did I just read?" moments and buckle up for an unhinged journey with dense philosophical ideologies at every turn....more

Addictive, sexy, gruesome and thrilling with Karina's classic sense of humour. I loved every single moment of Javier and Luisa's story. I honestly cannot stop thinking about them!!
Dirty Angels by Karina Halle is "an enemies-to-lovers dark mafia romance between a ruthless drug lord and the fiery woman he kidnaps". This story is set in Mexico and steeped in the gritty and dangerous atmosphere of the drug cartel.
Luisa Chavez is a 23-year-old woman who finds herself quickly transforming from struggling waitress to the wife of a drug lord after a very unfortunate encounter with the infamous Salvador Reyes. The silver lining is that she will now have access to enough money to properly care for her parents... but the cost is so much higher than she could have imagined.
Enter: Javier Bernal. Cold. Brutal. Ruthless... and one of Salvador's greatest rivals. Salvador's shiny new wife looks like the perfect leverage Javier needs. Lucia must be taken, she must be held for ransom.. and if Salvador doesn't cave to his demands, she must be disposed of. This is just the way things work in the cartel; it's how deals are made and reputations are maintained. But there's just one problem: Lucia has a fire in her eyes and an unwillingness to break that makes Javier want to keep Lucia all to himself.
"Sex needed to be a little rough and crude to balance out the elegance. A touch of tasteful violence goes a long way."
This was a wild and addictive ride! I was hooked from the prologue and could not put it down. The way Karina navigated this captor x captive dynamic was perfect, in my opinion. Their story unraveled in such an organic and immersive way. I was seduced right alongside Lucia! At one point I wasn't quite sure how things were going to resolve but the conclusion brought everything together so seamlessly with fantastic character arcs for both Lucia and Javier.
"I could survive him, his touch, his anger, his passion, because I was starting to understand him. I just couldn’t survive anyone else."
There are some very satisfying and unhinged romantic gestures in this book that I will not soon forget. Javier is my perfect psychopath and Lucia is perfect match. I'm obsessed with them!
And oh my godddd the banter and the one-liners! Perfection. I have always adored Karina's sense of humour it's one of the top reasons that I love her work so much. But pairing her quirky comic relief with such a sinful and delicious dark romance story is the combination I didn't know I needed.
I am so damn excited to dive into the next books in this trilogy... BUT after I finished, I discovered that this series is interconnected with two of Karina Halle's other dark romantic suspense series: The Artist's Trilogy and the Sins Duet. I immediately looked up the reading order and re-routed myself to start at the beginning.
Reading order:
1) The Artist's Trilogy    - Sins & Needles    - On Every Street    - Shooting Scars    - Bold Tricks
2) Dirty Angels Trilogy    - Dirty Angels    - Dirty Deeds    - Dirty Promises
3) The Sins duet (second gen)    - Black Hearts    - Dirty Souls
*The Artist's Trilogy includes Javier's backstory and the Sins Duet is the second-generation.
As I write this review, I am halfway through Sins & Needles and loving it!! I can't believe it's taken me so long to pick these up. Will I ever forgive myself!? Excuse me while I tumble down Karina's dark contemporary rabbit hole!...more

Kings of Carrion has ALL THE FEELS. It's dark, gritty and at times horrifying, which in true Keri Lake fashion, serves to illuminate the hope and love kept alive within the hearts of the characters as they face this action-packed, risky and devastating adventure. "We are broken pieces, stitched together by the pain of our losses. I don't know if we'll ever be fixed again... In a world of monsters, love makes us human."
With each book in this series, I find myself more obsessed. During Calico Descending, I was a little skeptical about where things were headed, but after reading Kings of Carrion all my doubts have been thrown out the window. Out the fucking window. In this book, the characters' instincts to survive and protect one another in the midst of such horrifying circumstances is palpable and raw. The action and suspense, particularly in the second half, had me physically vibrating, so utterly invested in what was to happen to these characters that I've come to FEEL SO MUCH FOR. And the way that these novels are structured as a whole, with two separate storylines that collide in the middle is GENIUS. Keri is the master of multiple timelines and multiple point of views, I've never found an author that comes close to working this type of magic.
Mrs. Lake, how is it you can create a world where horror and hope tango together so desperately? My heart broke open for these characters over and over, and it will be awhile before I feel whole again.

My heart broke open for these characters over and over, and it will be awhile before I feel whole again....more

Islay Jacobs and Ryan West did such a fantastic job bringing this book to life with their voices! Islay Jacobs, especially, did an incredible job of switching up her accent as she switched between Lustina and Farryn. Chapters 48-51 were incredibly emotional. Definitely recommend in this format if you are an audiobook lover!
06/2022: I am editing this review after reading Nightshade for the third time this year. I decided to re-read it before Infernium, and holy infernal lands, it was just as spectacular as the first time. This book gives me legitimate chills -- I am sitting here dumbfounded as to how Keri Lake created such a masterpiece. 5 stars could never be enough.
Potential triggers: mental illness, suicide, murder, religious cults, on-page sexual assault, explicit sexual scenes including dub con.
Keri Lake's writing is always incredible, and this book is no exception. The world-building is intricate and extensive, though not overwhelming. Nightshade is a genius landscape that is both chilling and enchanting. It's a place where suffering is pervasive and obscure and lost souls are not even aware that they are lost. Experiencing it through Farryn's eyes had me on the edge of my seat and so invested in her journey. The plot is brilliant and checks all the boxes for me: angels/demons, paranormal romance, enemies to lovers, fated lovers, commentary on religion and morality, multiple timelines and POVs, a quest for the truth and an ancient prophecy, as well as flawless smut (I must say... I will never look at a bell tower the same way). I mean, come on.
“I have crossed the endless void of time and space, over the centuries I've waited, with a yearning to see your face once more. If you think that I could just let you go now, when fate has gifted me the impossible, then you've not yet met the depths of my obsession. It has no bounds where you're concerned, Farryn. I would fight all the evils of hell for you, but I do not possess the strength to set you free.
Jericho is the definition of morally grey. It is so refreshing, so satisfying, to come across a male main character with a monstrous reputation that is not a paragon of virtue in disguise. He is powerful beyond measure and reports having a proclivity for darkness and destruction since childhood -- this becomes a fate which he knowingly seals in an act of vengeance. Banished to Nightshade by the Heavens, Jericho lives as a pariah among lost souls with no clear path to redemption, and no real incentive to find one. That is, until Farryn Ravenshaw ends up at his cathedral.
Jericho says it best: “a villain is quite capable of love. It’s only the matter of what he’s willing to sacrifice for that love which separates him from a good man. Centuries later, when Farryn questions his acts of evil, he asks her, “are the morals of man so black and white?.. I have killed in ways that would seem merciless, and I have loved just as ruthlessly. He is possessive, unwavering, confident, vindictive, wounded, and powerful beyond measure. Oh, he also has wings and an eye patch. I can't be the only one twisted enough to find him infatuating.
I love this book something fierce and definitely recommend diving in blind. I've added some musings on other characters that I love below, but this information is spoilery so read at your own risk.
-------------------spoilers after this point. . . . . . . . . .
(view spoiler)[Lustina is a heartbreaking character, and I should curse Keri Lake for crippling my heart by painting a picture of someone so pure and good natured in a dark and disturbing world, only to have her senselessly abused and destroyed. Keri’s writing so perfectly depicts Lustina’s bright and bubbly spirit break through her hardened, cautious exterior, as the baron reveals his understanding of, and love for, her -- she completely comes to life in these pages! Every time she is described as slapping a hand over her mouth as she giggles with the Baron, I can hear it inside my head. And this makes her demise that much harder to handle. I was a sobbing mess in Chapter 48.
Lustina recognizes very quickly that something has been broken inside of Jericho, and instead of turning away she looks beyond his flaws and welcomes the intensity of his love for her even the strikingly possessive nature of it. His love for her, while intense and abrasive at times, is something so far removed from the degradation and cruelty she has received from all the other men in her life. The baron encourages Lustina to speak her truth, to question the teachings of the church and look beyond the smoke and mirrors to see the evil hiding within. Lustina is warned to stay away from him because of the prophecy -- but how could she? He is the only good thing she has left. Though he likely would have taken her by force, she offers herself to him, freely, for eternity. She is the embodiment of purity of heart and unconditional love. She is so pure and wonderful, it's believeable that Jericho would pine for her for centureies. I would pine for her for centures! My heart breaks for her.
I love Farryn and I loved getting to know her through this adventure. She's an intelligent and independent woman, but somewhat lost in life. In contrast to Lustina, she is not bright and bubbly when we first meet her. Rather, she is introspective and self-conscious. She had a difficult childhood, dealing with the loss of her mother and the seeming mental illness and suicide of her father... and while she marches on durig the day as if she has her shit together, this mystery about her father nags at her and propels her toward understanding his work. Understanding Nightshade.
Farryn later learns she is Lustina incarnate, but she has no recollection of this previous existence or connection to this girl. She questions this at one point in the novel, wondering when Jericho’s intrigue will fade when he realizes that she is ordinary. But it doesn’t. He loves her because he is tethered to her soul. While she is not wholly Lustina, Lustina is part of her. I loved witnessing her soul awaken with Jericho: the moments of bright and bubbly laughter that escape her only after meeting Jericho, even slapping her own hand to her mouth just as Lustina would. There are so many echos of Lustina in Farryn from the moment she takes the leap from the building to find Nightshade. They are so masterfully woven into the story, I didn't even see them all until I re-read it.
"If you think you’re going to try to seduce me into staying, Mister Van Croix, you don’t know me, at all, I’m afraid.    “If you think I have to try, I’m afraid you don’t know me either, Miss Ravenshaw."
Ok, the bell tower scene was incredible. And normally I would find it so ridiculous that Farryn proclaims her intent not to be seduced only to be fucking Jericho a heartbeat later... But when they kiss and her memories come flooding back??? Omg. Perfection. (hide spoiler)]
I loved the overarching commentary on love itself: that only those who have found true love could possibly understand sacrifice. I could say so much more, but the novel really speaks for itself. I think this may be the best book I've ever read -- though perhaps Infernium will change my mind....more

This was my most anticipated read to date & I was not disappointed. I am so grateful to have received an ARC to review.
In this conclusion you can expect: intensified gothic elements, expanded world-building, multiple POVs & timelines (with a focus on Jericho’s origin), incredible new side characters, fated love against all odds, explicit sex scenes & mature themes including multiple traumatic events. Keri Lake has detailed trigger warnings list (includes some spoilers).
Infernium is a hypnotizing and intoxicating story. Where Nighshade was haunting, Infernium is chilling; both are heart-wrenching. This love story broke my heart wide open, as I expected it would, and I am beside myself, awestruck, raw and emotionally exhausted upon its completion. It’s exactly what I was hoping for in a sequel and conclusion, though even more mind-bending and harrowing than I could have imagined.
There is an added layer of intrigue and intensified elements of horror in this story as Farryn is grappling with strange experiences, dreams and visions things even Jericho can’t quite explain and Jericho is battling his own inner demon. It's a true development from the precarious situation they land themselves in at the end of Nightshade, with the addition of evil forces at work beyond my wildest imagination. The world is expanded to include the addition of multiple realms in detail and their respective creatures. The plot is intricate and unpredictable but masterfully written; I felt completely immersed in this world just as I did with Nightshade. I won't say much more about that, but know that this story gets very dark, very bleak, and terrible things happen which are completely irreparable. Oh look, here I am crying again.
"Let them send their legions of angels and demons. Any god or devil foolish enough to lay claim to you will suffer my unforgiving wrath. You are mine, Farryn. Mine. There is no compromise, no bargain that could possibly change what has already been decided. Understand?"
Our beloved Jericho maintains his morally grey status as he becomes desperate to protect his love at all costs. Gaining knowledge of his early years and also experiencing him make decisions out of sheer desperation without his full power verifies his nature as this true entity of both good and evil. He is ruthless, possessive and merciless, with only one goal: protect Farryn.
"You are my threshold for pain. The suffering I cannot bear, and my only true weakness. I will not lose you to anyone."
The chapters from the perspective of the Baron in Praecepsia were incredibly well done. I was so satisfied having some of the blanks from book one filled in while also experiencing the moments leading up to his entanglement with Lustina. The few glimpses we get of him and Lustina struck me right in the heart. Lustina, born of the light, is a character that I will never forget. I've never felt such raw heartbreak for a fictional character in all my life as I did in Nightshade. And I was so naive to think that there was not more to her story. Once again, I was a sobbing mess for this girl that is the embodiment of purity and grace.
"Don't you dare feel remorse. You just showed me the pain inside of you. Your pain in my pain. When you suffer, I suffer."
Alongside Jericho, Farryn comes into her own resilient and assertive power, though she endures unbelievable suffering in her pursuit for freedom and love. The scars she carries from the events of this book are the type which never truly fade. Her journey devastated me.
“Turned out... the intensity of what love could be, was more than just a scrawled heart on a page. More than the simplicity of affection and longing, caring and nurturing. I’d come to know there was a shadowed side of it, too. A much darker version, comprised of obsession, pain, and the unflinching readiness to sacrifice.
Oh, and before I forget. The sex scenes in this book are on point, though some are actually a little horrifying... But the primal connection Farryn and Jericho share is unmatched.
"I am starving for your saericasz." If you know, you know.
I read Infernium over the course of a few days because my work life got in the way. But I listened to Keri Lake's playlist (can be found ) in my time between chapters and it truly transformed the reading of this book into an experience, allowing me to slip over the edge into a deep sea of daydreams and introspection about these characters. I truly am going to miss Farryn and Jericho and this world, though I am satisfied with their conclusion and will cherish this story forever.
There are two epilogues which are just perfection. Keri Lake is a master when it comes to writing in general, but her epilogues bring a sense of closure that help to mend the heart while not muting the intensity of the final chapter. In her foreward she writes that she hopes Infernium provides its readers with a sense of closure for Farryn and Jericho and I personally got that.
Keri Lake, if you read this, I hope you know how incredibly talented you are! Your stories leave me with a sense of awe and wonder, and move me through so many emotions and this is the reason I read. This Duology is unmatched in my opinion at this point in my reading journey (okay, perhaps matched only by the Juniper Unraveling series) and I will continue to recommend it over and over.

Her ability to balance deeply dark and horrific stories with the most profound and all-consuming romance leaves me absolutely weak in the knees. Nocticadia is no exception. This book had my heart racing from the prologue, immediately pulling me to its murky depths and indulging my dark heart.
Nocticadia is the story of Lilia Vespertine, a compassionate and resilient woman whose quest for answers about a mysterious illness leads her to Dracadia University an ivy league college located on an island off the coast of Massachusetts where she meets the infamous and abrasive Dr. Devryck Bramwell, also known as "Dr. Death". Lilia is looking for answers and Devryck... well, he's keeping secrets.
"Allow me to caution you, Miss Vespertine. You are a confused moth dancing about a wild flame. Blind to the incomprehensible danger of your curiosities."
The romance here is a forbidden student x teacher dynamic with a 10+ year age gap. It's a true slow burn, but I mean it when I say that it is worth the wait! The development of Lilia and Devryck's relationship is so organic, with the forbidden aspect adding a tormenting dose of angst and tension that had me hot and bothered. When they finally come together, their maddening sparks become a blazing inferno.
I adored these both of these characters! Lilia is the type of female protagonist that I could immediately relate to and root for. Devryck is the perfect morally grey male protagonist, and I was swooning hard for his tormented soul straight from the beginning. I love his unique mental and medical health representation, not to mention his possessiveness and filthy mouth when it comes to Lilia .... lord help me.
Lilia and Devryck come to compliment each other so flawlessly and had me absolutely melting; the cold and moody mad scientist and his relentlessly warm and curious student, two halves of a perfect whole. Lake absolutely slayed the student teacher trope!
"She was the warmth of the sun on a cold and rotting corpse. The first breath after a lifetime of death."
The pacing of this book was perfect for me, but I am definitely biased toward tortuously delicious slow burns and longer, twisted stories. I got completely lost in this book and didn't want to find my way out. The gothic elements are gripping and plentiful and contribute to an ominous and irresistible world that is nothing short of immersive. I could not put this book down! The plot unravels true to Lake's usual style, with glimpses of the past masterfully shining through the present to illuminate the truth and unravel the mystery.
"Some kisses were said to feel like fireworks. His felt like a slow-drip anesthetic, silently siphoning my senses, until all I could smell, taste, and feel was him."
I love that Lake chose to tackle dark academia but with a refreshing focus on science and medicine. Lake has already proven her ability to blend fiction with fact to create medical horrors in her post-apocalyptic series, Juniper Unraveling, and Nocticadia is no different. This book includes a fictional parasite and medical condition with flawless execution. As someone who works in healthcare and has studied science and medicine in some capacity, I didn't find a single thing out of place or worthy of a head-scratch. There is a science motif woven through the prose that makes the romance so poetic, unique and memorable I could not get enough!
"The dead themselves are harmless. It's what they leave behind that inspires fear."
If you haven't yet read anything from Keri Lake, I urge you to pick up any of her books! They will hurt you, heal you, wow you, turn you on and absolutely blow your mind. I am always left feeling completely satisfied while also salivating for more... and if that isn't great romantic fiction, I don't know what is.

This trilogy was such a twisted, angsty, romantic and disorienting ride... and it was just what I needed when I picked it up!
I was completely consumed by it. Get it?
"As is true with any villian, right or wrong is never black or white, it's always gray." Consumed by Deception
I'm writing a series review instead of individual reviews because these books are quite short and they are incredibly interconnected; they read as one complete story. I'm keeping this super vague to prevent any spoilers! I did give each a book a star rating to reflect my reading experience (below).
This was my first taste of Rina Kent's writing and I am honestly floored by her storytelling ability. At first, I didn't think this would hit the emotional depth I usually go for but I was having fun and invested in the mystery. In the second book, Kent hit me with an emotional gut punch and from there I was sold. This trilogy checks all the boxes for me.
"You called me a disaster, but this is the true disaster, Lia. You and me." Tempted by Deception
I absolutely love the structure of this trilogy! There are shifting timelines that allow Kent to reveal truths in a very specific way, and I was gripped by each book as the pieces slowly started clicking into place. I could anticipate some aspects of the mystery, but others completely surprised me! In both instances, I was impressed with Kent's cleverness.
"Either you come completely undone or you take your punishment." Vow of Deception
Adrian Volkov is possessive, sadistic, manipulative and dominating. But he loves hard. There are so many things I want to say about him, but I don't want to give anything away about the story. I loved him from the jump, despite his questionable morals, and then proceeded to fall harder as the story unfolded. He is perfection. But I may be broken, because some of his behaviour might be seen as irredeemable to some readers. Adrian and Lia's romance has so many delicious and gripping layers. This couple had me in a complete chokehold. I can't wait to revisit this story just to pick up on the little things I may have missed.
"I don't want to be your anything." "Are you sure it's not the opposite?" Tempted by Deception
The final book, Consumed by Deception, was definitely less intense than the previous two and some aspects of the plot felt a little less organic. But overall, I adore Adrian and Lia and I happily devoured their conclusion in less than 24hrs.
Note: While this trilogy definitely functions as a standalone, this is not the recommended place to start if you want to read all of Kent's books. She has a recommended reading order .
This trilogy has many potential triggers. I am listing them here at the bottom as some of them could be spoilers. Read with caution (but of course, read if you need to!). . . . . . . . . . This is my first time reading a book by Sophie Lark! While I understand this is pretty different than her usual dark romance, Anastasia absolutely exceeded my expectations and I will be reading Lark's entire backlist. The writing in this book is so beautiful, it haunts me. The world building, the characters, the dialogue, the plot... everything is soulful, intentional, enchanting and poetic.
This is a story inspired by the Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia. It's a reimagining of her story without the tragic end. But don't let this fool you she endures a trauma-heavy, painful and emotional journey on the way to her happily-ever after.
"Suffering changes you. Either you become cold and bitter, divorced from human feeling. Or the opposite occurs, and you can’t bear to inflict the pain you’ve felt on anyone else."
If you are looking for a simple and fast-paced read, this is not it. This book is hefty. It's almost 700 pages with a slow start, and to be completely honest I did not know if I would like it based on the pace of the beginning. If you remember anything from this review, let it be the fact that this slow start is so incredibly worthwhile. The scenes in the beginning from Anastasia's youth, the introduction of her family and the many side characters connected, serve big purposes that become evident later on in the story. I am so glad I stuck with this incredible story beyond the slow beginning, because as I moved through the pages, this book bewitched me, sunk teeth in me, and pulled me under. It felt like I slipped right into the pages, the scenes so vivid and affecting, the characters so raw and real.
Anastasia and Damien are incredible characters on their own, but together they are everything. Lark's author bio states that she likes to create heroes and heroines that need each other to become better versions of themselves and this couldn't be more true for Damien and Stassie.
"Even if you see how dark the world can be choose to believe it could be better."
The romance is slow, subtle, and minimal for most of the book, but it's also intense, passionate and indulgent. Anastasia and Damien's love story is impactful even with so much of it happening off the page and/or from a distance. Their love is forbidden and complicated; they transform from strangers to enemies to friends to more, all within a social and political climate that threatens to force them apart. Their relationship grows and changes drastically and organically. I will never forget it, and I already can't wait to revisit it.
The romance between this unlikely pair is obviously integral to the plot, but there is so much more to the story. While the first half is quite character driven, the second half is action-packed and intense, with a few twists and turns that I did not see coming. The conclusion of the story is flawless and had me all up in my feelings.
“I’m not a monster. I’m a man who was touched by the monstrous.
Rasputin is one of the most intriguing characters to me; his arc was masterfully developed and executed. He's one of those characters you hate to love and love to hate all at the same time. I definitely want to seek out the known history of the real Grigori Rasputin after reading this book.
The writing makes this book truly stand out, in my opinion. The prose is striking and poetic, with full-circle moments and hard-hitting statements that made me stop in awe. The prose is flawless and soulful. Reading it felt like I was reading a writer's true labor of love. This story is pure magic.

I would recommend this work of art to anyone that likes historical fantasy (emphasis on the fantasy) and historical romance, poetic prose with heavy symbolism, stories about war and oppression with trauma-heavy content, intricate plots and multifaceted characters....more
This series is truly unique! It's been on my reading list for a long time and I finally picked it up (though admittedly, I went in blind, per usual). This series is truly unique! It's been on my reading list for a long time and I finally picked it up (though admittedly, I went in blind, per usual). When I first started reading this, it felt like "Dexter for feminists" and now that I've completed it, I stand by that statement.
Potential triggers: traumatic character backstories with flashbacks, dark themes, violence, abuse and gore (some explicit but also some implied), homophobia, explicit sex senes
"Revenge is a dish best served cold Now that I agree with. It means they forget you’re coming for them, and their screams sound so much prettier when the time finally comes." The Risk
I love dark romantic vigilante stories! They are my kryptonite. I'm a complete slut for a twisted revenge plot with a tortured yet capable hero and a believable romance with someone who can understand the hero's pain and behaviour. S.T. Abby went one step further and swapped the typical gender roles for this, and honestly it's one of the most badass, feminist things I've read in awhile. I still don't know if I want to be Lana, or be with her.
"There’s a certain high you get from fooling the world into thinking you’re the lamb instead of the rabid wolf." Sidetracked
This is a love story between a serial killer with a vendetta and the FBI agent that is actively investigating her case. Lana is a badass, enigmatic female lead that I was enamoured with. She is not killing on a whim; she has been preparing for this moment for years and acts with calculation and intelligence. Her backstory is truly horrifying and I didn't even need to question my morals. I loved her revenge. On the other hand, Logan is an agent with strong FBI-approved morals and (supposedly) incredible instincts. He's married to his work, and his life is flipped upside down the moment he gets tangled in Lana's web. Don't get me wrong, he's badass in his own way and I was swooning for him!! I particularly loved that Logan is depicted as a good agent with good intentions; the way this case challenges him and transforms him is really well done.
The angst surrounding this premise had me in a chokehold with Lana's close proximity to law enforcement. I spent the majority of the series sick with worry that she would be caught. I was so invested in both her mission and their relationship; despite the secrets Lana is forced to try to keep, there is a depth and vulnerability woven into their romance that is not easily captured in fiction. While their chemistry is definitely magnetic, the intensity of their feelings for one another is palpable. This is a woman I wanted to root for as a reader, and to have her indulge in this passionate romance was more than satisfying.
"The flock have a new shepherd to fear. Baa, bitches." All the Lies
I love the episodic structure of this series. Each novella is gripping, intriguing and addictive; they all end on a cliffhanger that had me desperate for the next book. The climax of the story is bizarre, action-packed, entertaining and emotional. And the epilogue??? One word: satisfying.
I will note that the writing is good but it's not a literary masterpiece (particularly in the final book, I felt the writing became a little disorganized). I appreciated the use of quotes from Einstein, Shakespeare and Voltaire throughout, as well as the cheeky nature of Lana's internal dialogue. She definitely borders on unhinged a time or two (or three), and it was such an experience to be inside her mind. Was everything that happened in this story particularly believable? Not at all, but it was still incredibly entertaining.
Ultimately, Lana's an alpha female and I'm obsessed with her.
"I love him enough to burn the world to the ground in his name." Paint It All Red
I would recommend this to people who love dark romance, vigilante stories, slightly unhinged protagonists with tragic backstories, badass FMCs, revenge plots, intoxicating romance, action-packed stories with violence and gore, mystery and suspense.
I think it's worth noting the author S.T. Abby (other pen names include: C.M. Owens and Kristy Cunning) passed away in 2021. May she rest in peace and be remembered for the gifts she left for her readers....more
