I don't mean a novel with romantic elements, I mean a romance in the structural sense of the word. Two people who don't seem like they would work together, are attracted to each other nevertheless, who then overcome obstacles to achieve their happily ever after. Yes, as a genre it is terribly formulaic. You know what's going to happen, but that does not negate the charm of watching it happen. Writers like Sittenfeld add nuance and intelligent observation, and the results are fantastic....more

This was really charming. The second half became a bit heavy-handed and moralizing, but the delightful characters more than made up for it.

My only real criticism is that the author decided that the best critique of bigotry was to have his hero cut someone down with a phrase that struck me as being flat-out misogynistic. And that was supposed to be the moral high point of the book, I think. So, there's that. But, if you ignore that bit, it is a lovely book. ...more

Absolutely fantastic. Donna Tartt does not disappoint - if fact, I liked this even better than I liked "The Secret History." This kid's life was the pAbsolutely fantastic. Smart, gripping, and harrowing. I cannot recommend it enough....more
