The writing here reads how I always fear my own writing to be (bad). It gives unnecessary details that have no point and there’s little sense of any artistry to it. It’s very tell not show and the chapters end in weird places. It feels like Cobb is really trying to do something and it’s not working. The main character isn’t much of a character at all, there is no reason to care about her.
I flipped to the end to see what ended up happening and it wasn’t very surprising.

The plot was far too slow—the last 100 pages I read consisted of the group riding from inn to inn and dining. If I wanted to see someone going from one eatery to another, I would’ve just watched Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
Maybe I’ll come back to this but I feel like there’s better fantasy books out there. ...more

I actually didn't mind the slow plot, since the book is driven so strongly by its characters, but I read the blurb on the back and I realized it's just a repeat of Jack's backstory, with no nuance or change. Then I read some reviews, learned the ending, and decided to save myself time. I won't necessarily say it's bad and you should avoid it because it's clear that Piccoult knows how to write characters and setting, but I just don't think she executed the story in a compelling way ...more
