Lots of science and lots of *mind blown* theories that I found it hard to follow. And the love stories just weren't compelling enough for me to believe in. I'm kind of more interested in Empra, the mom in the story. I would love to read her story! Overall, it's a good book to hand kids who are into science and can follow the complicated storyline. ...more

It's a sci fi alien adventure that blends perfectly with the fantasy world of sprites, woodland spirits, and other magical creatures. It kind of set me back a little at first, but I ended up liking where he took us with this one.
I loved the line from his author's note in the back of the book. It perfectly sums up why I love Jonathan Maberry so much! And, let's face it - it's another great way to describe the power of words!
"When you have a nightmare and write it down, it loses its power to frighten you. When you frame it in words and lock it on the page, you've just succeeded in capturing and caging the things that scare you. Once caged . . . [you] discover that the more you understand something, the less frightening it is. And the more powerful you are."...more

Funny banter between the characters, a missing past that has been altered so the characters won't know what happened, government espionage, on the run with some serious self defense skills, oh a hot love story on top of all that. Yes, it seems like a lot of the others out ther, but this one may surprise you with originality. I like the writing style a lot more than some of the other science fiction out there. ...more

In the second part of the book, however, it changed into more of a utopian society with some weird undertones and lost me. I wanted more of the other. I stayed with it until the third section of the book. It was intriguing, but it just seemed like it rushed to an ending simply to get to the end. Interesting look at biological warfare. Kind of reminded me of every apocolyptic movie and book - a little Walking Dead, a little World War Z, and a little War of the Worlds. Kids will probably like it....more

This book really had me on the edge of my seat! Think zombies who are not dead. Instead they are being transformed into metal, mechanical monsters whose only instinct is to infect others. I loved the different perspectives throughout this horror story - including that of one of the monsters who was being transformed. I can't wait to book talk this one to my students and get a copy of it into the hands of one of the boys looking for something different. There are so many dystopian books out there that are girly (full of romance and angst), and the boys are wanting to read those kinds of things but aren't happy with those parts. Although not dystopian, this one lends itself to that genre quite well and will satisfy many of the boys wanting a book to keep them on the edge of their seats. And I can think of a few girls who just might fight them for it! ...more

So many of the authors that were there were ones that wrote wonderful books, but many of them had themes and content that are a little too mature for the youngest readers at my school. However, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Jessica Brody that day. She made me laugh and struck me as an author that probably wrote about things in a realistic enough manner that teenagers would respect her methods.
So I did a little research and decided to buy all of her books for the library. I read this one first and put several of the others in the hands of some of my more avid readers. Now, we are all fans of Jessica Brody!
This book was a really nice mystery with just enough aspects of science fiction that I didn't get confused. I am sure that many of my girl readers will enjoy it. It seems that so much science fiction turns the girls away, but I will be able to book talk this one in such a way that it will be intriguing to everyone.
I loved the main character and I can wait to read more of this series. (And that says a lot for someone like me who is soooooo tired of trilogies) I'll be looking for the next one to read AND to buy for the library....more

I had it in my hands about a year ago and started it, but I never finished it. There is a group of girls at my school that swore that this was the best book they have ever read, and they encouraged me to buy the entire series so that they could read them all. I loved their passion for the books and finally picked it up to take home for our Christmas break. Wow!
There was so much going on in the book. At times, I felt like it was trying too hard, but then I would get sucked into the newest part of the plot and realize that it was NOT trying too hard. It just needed to go there to make the story even better. This will definitely be one that I will recommend to all the kids coming into the library asking for more of the dystopian/scifi stuff they seem to be craving right now. ...more
