Why do we write reviews?
You have a lot of reasons I guess.

But for this review there is only one. I am writing this for my conscience.
Ever since I have rated this book, I always end up asking myself that, have I rated it with something it deserved or was it just out of sympathy (some call it pity vote)?

Reading other reviews (although most people just rate it and proceed) posed me with many other questions and also gave me idea of what people generally think about her and her diary.

So I’m going to start with-
DO WE DESERVE to review or even rate this book diary?
Yes it is a diary not a book. And aren’t diary meant to be something personal? Yes they are, but it was Anne's wish to get her diary published and she even went on to fictionalize the diary by changing names.

When I started this book I knew how it would end and who doesn’t! I had the least of the expectation, knowing that she was 13 years old but she just surprised me by the outlook she carried of life. She thought and wrote over few such things that didn’t occur to my mind until I read it but have applied throughout my life.
She at times made me laugh, at times made me feel sad. If she felt something, her writing definitely made me experience it and thus she overcame my expectation by large margin.

I have read in lot of review that her thoughts were way ahead of her age.
Of course they were, difficult conditions make you mature and responsible, but there were also other people living under the same roof and in same condition, the suffering had even effect on them. I remember the letter exchange between two sisters, at that point after reading Margot’s letter, for the first time I realised Anne was still child among them.

Some say she could visualize herself and her thoughts and actions from different perspective and thus realise her fault.
The thing with diary is that it is a lopsided view of the events. She would write her thoughts and what she wrote of others were her interpretation of them.....I have it in my mind but can’t put it in words and why should I! Does it matter what kind of girl was she? 'NO from me.

Last thing that occur to me is that many people found it uninteresting and tiresome.
I liked it, it couldn’t get any better. I mean they were in hiding for their life in a same house for two years without even opening the window; they were not solving murder mystery. I remember that when I was halfway through the book, I would every now and then turn to the last diary entry and count the days that remained. I felt very sad and depressed and it would have been the last thing to occur to me that it was uninteresting; I was just taken by her wish to see the outside world again, feel the fresh wind and to go to school, but...

This is not a book to enjoy much; we read it to gain the insight of hardships that people had to go through during this holocaust. Through this book she give us best view of the worst of the world. No one has ever benefitted from war; all it gives is pain and misery.
All this being said there is nothing to review the book, but accept it as written account of the vices of the war.

The worst question that seemed to have been slapped across my face was: Would this book have meant the same if Anne had survived the holocaust and lived to become old? Would it have been famous as it is now?
Well she didn’t survived and with her ended answer to this question and no one can bring her back.

Carl Martinez LOL...I looked through your profile...
http://www.goodreads.com/photo/user/6...

ROTFLMAO! You don't even know who this guy is, and you admit it!!!

Let me put it to you this way...assuming you really are from India...on the internet you could be anything for all I know...how'd you like it if I had photos all over my profile celebrating the British Raj murdering Indians in the 1800s? Or if I praised the Pakistani Muslims killing Sikhs or Hindus, assuming you're not Muslim...or vice versa if you are? You had millions of people flee Cuba because of this murderer Che Guevara, you don't see millions of people emigrating to Cuba do you? You're going to put a divisive figure like that you can't help but expect people to get offended.

Nilesh Kashyap WTF! you use ridiculous amount of LOL's and ROTFLMAO's, I'm going to accept the fact that you are bit retarded. End of discussion kiddo!
And a piece of advice, if you get offended that easily then internet is surely not the right place for you.

message 53: by Carl (new) - rated it 5 stars

Carl Martinez *shakes head* really? I ridiculous amount of LOLs? It's called computer language, simpleton. Maybe you have difficulty understanding it as I do you effeminate coolies when I gotta make a phone call.

Typical leftist, cannot debate so you got to insult...on the computer. We can go that route too

PS: let's see you put a picture of Hitler as your profile and see the reaction. LOL there you go bitch!

Nilesh Kashyap Cannot Debate!! Heh, where the fuck is debate? I don't see one.

P.S. Comment one more time, and you are fucking blocked.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads It most certainly is not a fraud. The ball point went on the market in 1938, for one thing.

Teresa Susanna wrote: "It most certainly is not a fraud. The ball point went on the market in 1938, for one thing."

Plus the diary wasn't even written in a ballpoint pen -- that's been proven. And, yes, she did die of typhus ... and in a concentration camp.

message 65: by Stacy (new)

Stacy Great review! Sometimes books are not meant to be entertaining. Sometimes they are meant to educate. I have not read the book, but at least I do have some knowledge as to what happened and I feel that all children need to be educated about this subject. History has a way of repeating itself.

Dhanashree Jambekar pretty much everything that I would like to say!

Lynda I don't have anything additional to add, I just wanted to thank you for an excellent review.

message 68: by JinLong (new) - added it

JinLong Xiao I think this book is suitable for those who study English, such as Chinese high school students. The book may not be a world classic, it may not be a gripping plot, it may not be a subtle rhetorical device, but it is more important for us to reflect on the war. There is a saying in China that the victims of war will always be civilians.

Lewis Menelaws What a coincidence, I am reading this "review" exactly 6 years from when you post it. I think that your write-up on this book is the best one I could find. Insightful, fair and the truth. Very well done Nilesh.

Wisteria Having known Holocaust survivors, and having read her diary/book several times when I was young, it deeply impacted me. Living in a city with many Jews, and many synagogues, and Hasidic Jews (one was a professor of mine), this was history that one encountered daily. I am grateful that despite the horrific fear that she must have felt that she chronicled her thoughts. It is amazing it was saved. As a teenager I read and re-read her diary. I imagine if she had lived (she was killed just before the war ended...) that she would have become a professional of some sort, written more, and certainly would have honored life. I would guess that writing her thoughts onto paper was a relief, an escape from the constant fear she must have felt. I was so sad to learn that she almost survived. She left a legacy of love and evil in her own words. I was in Amsterdam last year and did go by her house, but I couldn't bring myself to walk in. I was just too disturbed. The peaceful canal nearby and knowing she was torn from that building. I am much older now, but I will always hold a place in my heart for her and her valor. Her writings will help us to remember that evil still exists, in many forms. If she had lived, I doubt fame would be her goal - it would be survival. A professor of mine with the numbers running down his left arm from the concentration camp, when asked about his experience, merely said that there was nothing that could compare to what he had experienced, therefore, he cherished life, enjoyed his life and no longer worried. He had already been through the worst.

Deborah Sutch A great read but the Kindle edition is so full of typos! Spoilt the experience I'm afraid, some paragraphs were unreadable. I would not recommend this version.
