Warning: this review contains flashing gifs and foul language.

I've spent two years avoiding this book. I remember in 2011 when I stumbled across that exciting GR description and pretty - if slightly creepy and discomfiting - cover, but my initial curiosity was quickly dampened by the reviews from my trusted goodreads friends. And for nearly two years, I have listened. My intentions were to never give this book/series another thought, until I recently came across this interesting page: . And I noticed authors like Laurie Halse Anderson on the list. That's when something inside me rose up to meet the promise of a challenge - plus, who knows, sometimes my favourite books of all time have been those I'd taken a chance on against the odds.

But this book was just bad. The exciting premise is wasted on a novel that eats at the same lunch table as Twilight, Hush, Hush and Fallen. The mysterious paranormal aspect opens up many avenues for the author to have explored and yet she chooses instead to pick the dullest one - a cliched romance. And damn if this book isn't one huge glowing neon cliche. One where a boring heroine with a severe lack of personality meets a ridiculously good-looking, sexy, British bad boy - who could have anyone he wants - and he somehow finds himself madly in love with her. Why? Well, that remains the biggest mystery of all.

Two words come to mind when I think back over this book: wish fulfillment. But yes, the other two words spring to mind a lot too. This novel is a very fine example of a certain brand of book that contains mediocre-at-best writing, unbelievably hot male love interests and is an empty, easy sell for young teen girls. Noah really is quite laughably perfect (if you like controlling jerks, but I'll get to that in a second) with his perfect face, hair, body, smile (etc.), his massive fortune, his intelligence which includes knowledge of six languages and large quotes from various classic novels. He is so flawless, I felt like he'd just rolled off the factory production line, spritzed, polished and raring to go.

Ah yes, and about that controlling thing I mentioned. There's really no need to explain it in detail, I'll just pull up some quotes for you:

Noah placed his forefinger above my upper lip and his thumb below my bottom lip, and applied the slightest pressure, cutting me off. "Shut up," he said quietly.

What is Mara's response to his rudeness? I nodded feebly. o_O You nodded... feebly? What is wrong with you? I can't understand why you aren't all like:

Then: The waiter appeared then, and Noah plucked the menu from my hands and handed it over, rushing off our order in Spanish. The waiter departed for the kitchen.
I shot him a dark look. "I hadn't decided yet."
"Trust me."

This also happens in Fifty Shades of Grey, Christian orders for Ana without even asking what she'd like or if she's vegetarian or has any allergies. For one thing, it's flawed. But beyond that it's just goddamn rude. What exactly is sexy about a guy not giving a damn what you want? When you look past the pretty description we are given of Noah's perfection, I find him incredibly unattractive, pretentious and annoying. If I wasn't British myself, I think this book would give me a really bad opinion of British people; almost as bad as Lindsay Lohan in The Parent Trap remake when she tells her American twin "I have claaasss and you don't." *shudders*

This quote - "Because I'm European, and therefore more cultured than you" - might have been funny as an isolated incident but Noah's repetition of similar declarations of cultural superiority (with books, music, etc.) just made me think...

I also think Mara is in desperate need of a new girlfriend because the girls in this book are ALL her enemies. Even her two friends at the beginning get separated into best friend and evil girl who's trying to steal best friend away. The word "slut" naturally appears several times in this novel and usually when the characters are talking about mean girl Anna who immediately decided to make Mara's life hell because Noah showed some interest in her. This beautiful quote sums up Anna's characterisation:

"The list of what you're missing, Anna, is longer than the South Beach Free Clinic's walk-in list," Jamie said, and I was surprised to hear his voice. "Though I'm sure your hookup resume includes the same names."

Cue group laughter as good triumphs over the evil slut who doesn't deserve feelings. This always amazes me in these kind of books - that we're supposed to be sympathetic towards the MC and believe she is the victim and much more interesting because of her lack of sluttiness. I don't think I'll ever understand why that stuff matters.

I've been picking out all these quotes throughout this review but I've saved the best for last. If I had been drinking whilst reading this bit, I would have sprayed the contents of my mouth everywhere. I just... can't. This is in response to Mara finding out about how Noah slept with a girl who was in love with him just to prove a point to the girl's brother:

I should haul back and smack him, strike a blow for feminism or something or at the very least, get out of the car. But then his thumb traced my skin and without quite realizing it, I leaned toward him and rested my forehead against his.

... to hell with feminism! Hot jerk is touching my face!!

Jona Meow I agree with you 100000%, total waste of trees.

message 202: by Jessica (new) - added it

Jessica Everything you mentioned about noah's over powerment is correct, however you are missing the most important part of the novel. Mara is mentally unstable. He found her in a time when she was vulnerable and helpless which is why she reacts to his power the wy she does. This is not the typical abusive relationship as it would be if the protagonist was not so damaged. Intead Noah provided Mara with the push she needed to get in touch with her power and learn to accept her reality.

message 203: by Alex (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alex I liked it

message 204: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Galvan I like the part where Mara has sex with the dead guy she accidentally killed

Annabel Lee Im dying ! Hilarious review omg

message 206: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Power This is an A++ review. Thanks to you, I will read this book NEVER EVER. I much appreciate the quotes so I know exactly what kind of asshole that guy is.

message 207: by Chantal (new) - rated it 1 star

Chantal I hated this book. I really, really did!

Caitlin Hawkins This review encapsulates my feelings on this book, except for heartbreaking failure of the author to continue an interesting paranormal situation (Mara's powers) into an actual story. Instead, I remember texting my sister in law to ask her why on earth I was still reading. :(

message 209: by Ainhoareadsbooks (new)

Ainhoareadsbooks Thank you so much Emily! I was thinking about reading this but after reading your review (since I trust you a lot with reviews) I will NOT.

message 210: by Katie (new)

Katie I really wish I would've paid more attention to your review. I am about half way through this book and it will be a DNF for me because I just can't keep going! In reading the description I thought this series had so much potential but it disappoints throughout every chapter

message 211: by Aiko (new)

Aiko One: I love your review haha. Every gif is on point! two: you just saved me from reading a sucking ass book.. Thank you.

message 212: by Pepper (new) - added it

Pepper This book was perfect

message 213: by Bruna (new)

Bruna OMG hahaha I'm dying over this review, thank you for saving me from reading this. Can you recommend me any YA that doesn't involve any cliched romances and jerk male characters?

message 214: by Zaynah (new)

Zaynah SHE DID NOT JUST DO THAT
*facepalm*
It's kind of really sad to think that people think this kind of stuff is okay. I mean, if Noah was really really ugly and he said he'd slept with another girl, I'm willing to bet real money she'd dump him there and then. Forget that, she wouldn't even have 'fallen in love' with Noah in the first place. Thanks so much for writing this, I am NOT going to read this book.

Theresa Konicek I just started reading this and I am disappointed to hear that the paranormal aspect isn't going to be followed through with.

Lauralee 🇨🇦 I dnf'd this book about 20% through. My God, I couldn't take it anymore! Glad to see I'm not the only one with a dislike to this book.

message 217: by Minzy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Minzy Love your review and I thought I was being mean.

Flora Hold up. Rmb that last part when Noah convinced Mara to not kill that client?? Like woah bruh, this is my power. He hurt my baby brother. Why should I not put my power to good use and redeem myself, just so I can please you?? Noah has issues.

message 219: by Lara (new) - rated it 1 star

Lara Balieiro De Sousa This is the best review ever.

message 220: by Bluebamboo (new)

Bluebamboo WHY, WHYYYY do they keep writing books where all the girls other than the main heroine are either characterized as bitches, sluts and/or brainless cheerleaders? Is that REALLY how a young girl should be seeing fellow members of her sex/50% of the population around her?

message 221: by Kay En (new) - rated it 1 star

Kay En P. Exactly what I felt reading it

message 222: by Belle (new)

Belle Yes Thank you! You so read my mind.
I was disappointed with this book so much and with the characters too. At first the plot fascinated me and I thought why not because I really like crazy and romance, so I read it all the way to the third book but then stuff got kind of cringey still I held on then finally the ending came and I was like FUDGE! Seriously?! After all that, You gave me this? Why?

message 223: by Rebecca (new) - added it

Rebecca Sinnaeve I don't know if your review discourages me to read the book or not

message 224: by Carson (new)

Carson Crouch This book was good in the sense that it was fun! Like I think you can go into this book secure with how you want your man or his behavior (treats you equal, respectful, etc.) and still really enjoy it! Noah is obviously too "perfect" but that's just so readers can love it more haha. I think you will enjoy this book if you go in knowing it's just entertaining swift romance :)

Gabriela Gariglio Oh, everbody on my country (Brazil) seems to madly love this series and I just can't deal with the clichê blackhole that is Noah. OMG he's so... So trash of a character. Their relationship is absurd, came totaly of nowhere, c'mon. Can't deal with this at all and couldn't agree more with this blessed review that resumes everthing being totally ignored by everyone I know that read this book.

message 226: by Serena (new) - rated it 5 stars

Serena You are certainly opinionated. First of all Noah is not perfect. If you get past his "perfect face, hair, body, smile, his massive fortune, his intelligence and his memory and knowledge of languages" Noah does not love himself, he's selfish but very self aware of it and of coarse to people like you "a controlling asshole". If you could get past the first book you'll see the imperfections he truly has that lay beyond your very precise opinions. Noah being controlling has a certain dominance that can be attractive. Very clearly not to you, but understandably to others. Him ordering for her may bother you but I think it's nice to have him be so determined and straight forward with her. It's a matter of opinion, once again. I don't think it's a flaw in the book, I think it's a feature to be embraced in Noah. That he doesn't behave accordingly, that his actions are surprising, to someone more open minded, it's a pleasure to have somebody be more daring, I wouldn't have minded for him to have asked her if she would order what he thought she would like but it shows individuality, he surprises her and isn't afraid to be more demanding. Noah's small comment about Mara being American and therefore being less cultured than him is supposed to be humorous. Not taken litteraly. It is not that Anna doesn't deserve feelings, no, it's that she deserves her crushed for crushing others so often, it's worth applauding for to show a cruel person a taste of their own medicine. For your information, Noah did not in fact sleep with a girl to prove to the brother a point and the girl didn't actually love him, she didn't even like him! If you'd actually carefully read through it, I'm sure you would've realized.
And Mara being rooted in place by his touch is usual for a teenage girl. At least that I know. It's normal for her, being so very infactuated with him, to be shocked by his touch despite there being something she doesn't know is true or not that's not right.

Samah.vk Great review... Definitely not reading this

message 228: by Deb (new)

Deb Thanks everyone! Won't even start it. Back to classics

(Mellifluous Grant) Wish I could LOVE this review, that's how much I relate!

message 230: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Oh, good God. *frantically removes from TBR list*

message 231: by c (new) - rated it 2 stars

c I'm really happy to know I'm not the only one who didn't like this book.

message 232: by Kris (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kris The characters are flawed and the story is strange in places, but I was entertained and frankly couldn't put the book down. I didn't like the ending, but it leaves the door open for a sequel.

If I'd read the reviews, I probably wouldn't have read this book, but I did read it and I'm okay with the believability of the story.

message 233: by Lyssa's (new)

Lyssa's Reads A friend recommended this to me but now I'm a little skeptical... okay a lot skeptical

message 234: by Sam (new)

Sam Fldmin That's messed up.

Chrissie Whitley I mean, that first GIF sums it up nicely, IMO. Great review, because...yes.

message 236: by Shea (new)

Shea All you had to say was "Twilight" and I'm out. Thank you for the time I saved.

message 237: by Kassie (new)

Kassie I was thinking of reading this then I saw this and it describes everything I hate in a book. Thank you for this! Definitely will not read it

Tomi Oyedeji-Olaniyan Thank you so much for putting this out there. This book shook me before I even saw the reviews.

message 239: by Avery (new) - rated it 5 stars

Avery Guilmain Yes I thought this review was funny, but I loved the book. I did see though, which made me angry, some horrible things in this book. I think Noah should have been less of an a** but I did find him somewhat attractive. His sense of humor was okay, but his actions just kind of ruined it. And what happened at the end made e not want to continue.

Michael McGeehan I totally agree with your entire review. I could not even finish this.

message 241: by Mehar (new) - rated it 1 star

Wise decision!

message 244: by Alexis (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alexis Rae Wilson-Cook Well if you read the rest of the series than most of everything you talked about gets explained and makes quite a bit of sense. But I guess everyone still has a right to there opinion I suppose.

message 245: by Megan (new)

Megan Wow, someone in a Facebook group I am in just posted about this series and when I came to GoodReads and saw it had over 4 stars, I was going to give it a try! So glad I saw your review first. Sounds awful! Thanks for saving me time and money.

message 246: by D (new) - rated it 5 stars

D Well as someone mentioned earlier, everyone has a right to their opinion but I couldn't disagree more. I loved the book, thought it was well written and enjoyed the fact that it wasn't a typical instant gratification book that throws everything up on you in the first few chapters. So people, give it a try and form your own opinion.

message 247: by Kasturi (new) - added it

Kasturi What a wonderfully entertaining review! Thank you for saving my money. :D You rock, Emily! :)

message 248: by Horses (new) - rated it 3 stars

Horses Cat Doar o steluta?

message 249: by Anderson (new)

Anderson Kimber Thanks for the warning! I almost picked this book up, but I've read enough stories that paint arrogant, narcissistic, controlling douchebags as being desirable to last me five lifetimes. I'm passing this series up. And the author for that matter. Not to be a feminist, but ffs, enough with the asshat controlling guys.

message 250: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Thank you so much for your very honest, and humorous review. I really hope young girls don’t read these because because they encourage the misogynistic narrative that all girls must be conservative in the sexual lives in order to be with a man, and all girls should fight each other for male attentions and slut shame each other. Most important it pushes the overused narrative that Fifty Shades introduced; controlling, borderline psychotic men are sexy, desirable and loveable.
